Abstract Carlos Castaneda has been studied mostly as a fraud anthropologist, novelist/philosopher and a contributor to the emerging phenomenon of neo-shamanism. Instead, this article focuses on Castaneda’s individual philosophy and religious system as developed in his written works. A threefold classification is proposed—early, transitional, and late works, complete with chief characteristics of each. The analysis shows how Castaneda slowly drifted from the scholarly style through stress on the narrative to full-fledged religious texts. These changes also reflect on Castaneda’s personal life; from academic ambition through public scandal ‘debunking’ his counterfeit works to the formation of a little new religious movement, of which Castaneda was a charismatic leader. Unlike most scholarly analyses of Castaneda that focus mainly on the early writings, this article takes into serious consideration his late works and shows that it was here that the author fully developed as a religious thinker and guru.

Anne in Swedish. How the Spirit of the Age and Production Terms Influence the Protagonist’s Character Traits in Swedish Translations and Adaptations of Anne of Green Gables  L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908) has received much academic interest. Drawing on related research on the novel and its Swedish editions, my article investigates how the variation in the Swedish versions influences the characterization of Anne 1909–2018. My study acknowledges the feminist view within translation studies as expressed by Sherry Simon, and uses Norman Fairclough’s linguistic model for contextualization. The primary material consists of Montgomery’s original text, the translations and adaptations by Karin Jensen, Aslög Davidson, Margareta Sjögren-Olsson, and Christina Westman as well as correspondence between the publishing houses and translators. Further, I have interviewed Westman and corresponded with her publisher. The texts are analysed regarding omissions and additions. On a micro-level, all active verbs where Anne is the grammatical subject are analysed. My results show that all editions give prominence to Anne’s academic ambition. A major finding is that the 1941 and 1962 versions increase Anne’s ambition by using more active verbs and stronger expressions. Westman’s 2018 edition, however, is a subtle revision of the first Swedish translation, with the result that Anne’s ambition is diminished again. Despite girls and women having gained more freedom over the last 100 years, the latest edition thereby interrupts the tendency to stress Anne’s ambition. This is understood as a result of clashing discursive and social norms. On the other hand, the emphasis on Anne’s ambition in the 1941 and 1962 editions comes with a cost of religious, moral, intellectual, and emotional aspects, creating a one-dimensional Anne.

AbstractFor reasons of academic ambition, this poem was not compiled in Hohenloher-Fränkisch, Alemannisch, Badisch-Karlsruherisch, Westerwälder Platt or scientific English, but in High-German. This poem is contributed by Christof’s first academic family of the early 1980s. This work would not have been possible without the inspiring spices and brain calories of Jule’s delicious quiche that turned a long poetic session into a memorable scientific breakthrough event.

The study aims at knowing the level of the counseling needs and the academic ambition in general according to the living variable (house, dormitory) of Kirkuk University students. To achieve the aims, two criteria are prepared. The first one is for the counseling  needs while the other is for the level of ambition adopted by the two researchers. After taking the output of honesty, stability, and the distinct ability of the criterion, it is applied on the sample of the main study which is chosen in a random formula from Kirkuk University colleges, the scientific and humanity ones. Its number is 300 male and female students who are classified on (8) colleges, four of them are for each scholastic specialization (scientific and humanity). After using the statistic means (the relative weight, the T value of one sample and for two independent samples, and Person's correlation coefficient), the study reaches the following important conclusions: In general, Kirkuk University students have needs in the study field more than their needs in other fields according to their responses on the counseling needs criterion, then the psychological dimension. Kirkuk University students who are living in the dormitory are in need to things more than those who are living at home in the study and psychological dimensions. In general, Kirkuk University students have a good academic ambition level. Kirkuk University students who are living in the dormitory are more ambitious than those who are living at home. According to the conclusions above, the researchers recommend a number of recommendations and do some future studies.
