PurposeThe increasing number of strata property in Malaysia promotes the different usages of development under the integrated development, which comprise the different usages of owner groups. These owner groups may not enjoy all the common properties in the integrated development. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify the important to designate the limited common property for the owners who have the exclusive benefit on it. However, the establishment of the subsidiary management corporation and limited common property is less popular in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachHence, research should be carried out to identify the importance of the establishment of the subsidiary management corporation and enhancement for the establishment of subsidiary management corporation to increase the willingness of the owner to establish the subsidiary management corporation. Collective Action Theory likewise assists to increase the willingness of the owner in the establishment of the subsidiary management corporation. A sum of 100 owners in the integrated development and 187 stratified property professionals are the respondents in this research, by applying the random sampling method.FindingsResults indicate the problems that occur in the integrated development is the complexity management in integrated development, followed by the usages of the common property. Therefore, Collective Action Theory could ensure the effectiveness of the establishment of the subsidiary management corporation in the aspect of social rights, resources, governance groups and participants.Originality/valueThis paper provided an overview of the management circumstance in the integrated development of Malaysia and discussed some effective enhancements to promote the sustainable formation of the subsidiary management corporation or two-tier management corporations.

The paper is devoted to the study of types of managing the student’s educational activity. The educational discipline “Practicum of problem solving in informatics” for students of third year study, future teachers of informatics have been chosen for realising pedagogical conditions of computer-oriented management of students’ educational activity. Progressive turn from direct management through comanagement, subsidiary management to self-management was the main idea of designing the courseware. The information and communication educational environment has been based on the platform of learning management system Moodle. The Workshop elements of Moodle played the central role in management of students’ educational activity. The results of our pedagogical observation and assessment showed the efficiency of suggested approach. Additionally, there were shown the lack of students’ competency in time planning and introspection on the base of the experimental data.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend the understandingof how family logic is transferred through mundane practices across the subsidiaries of a Japanese multinational corporation (MNC) in different national contexts. Design/methodology/approach In order to fulfil this purpose, a comparative qualitative case study was adopted with emphasis on actors’ interpretations. Findings Through qualitative data analysis, three findings and their theoretical significances can be summarised. First, it was found that the constellations of family, market and religion logics were transferred differently. This is significant for Japanese management scholars since it illuminates the importance of actors who perceive the (non-) necessity of logics in a Japanese MNC facing institutional dualities. Second, it was found that the family logic is enacted at different levels and with different boundaries. This is significant for both institutionalists and international business scholars since it highlights the strong influence of language and religion in the transfer of logics from one country to another. Third, it was found that the enactment of the family logic greatly affects the acceptability of Japanese management practices. This is significant for business managers since it further proposes an intimate relationship between Japanese management practices and the meanings attached to the family logic. Originality/value The originality of this work stems from an updated comparative qualitative study of the management of a Japanese MNCs’ subsidiaries across different countries, providing in-depth insights for international business, Japanese subsidiary management and institutional logics perspectives.

Most studies discuss the mechanisms through which multinational enterprises (MNEs) empower their autonomy to their subsidiaries. However, how giving autonomy can promote one’s absorptive capability is less investigated. In addition, the linked relationship is important for subsidiaries, but it also has a spillover effect. Based on this idea, this study analyzes the market conditions and springboard intentions as the reasons for subsidiary autonomy. We use data from subsidiaries that are located in Taiwan to test our contention. Our findings indicated that market conditions have positive impacts on empowering autonomy, and autonomy would allow subsidiaries to improve their knowledge absorption capacities. This study also verified the mediating effect of autonomy and the moderating effect of vertical integration quality. In general, our findings contribute to international enterprise and subsidiary management theory and have practical referential value for spillover effects and investment strategies.


Strata properties in Malaysia were getting popular especially in the urban areas. As the population density in urban centres are expected to grow continuously, the number of residents for strata properties are expected to rise continuously which help to promote the mix-developments to be developed under a strata scheme. However, there are some issues regarding the unfair management for the common property in mixdevelopment where certain owners have to pay the maintenance fee for common properties which are not enjoyable by them. Therefore, this paper has the objective to examine the current practice of strata management towards limited common property. The enactment of Strata Management Act 2013 and enforcement in 2015 promoted the self-governance for strata scheme in Malaysia. For the current strata property, the scheme will be managed by all strata unit owners where Strata Title Act 1985 and Strata Management Act 2013 provide the framework in establishing the Management Corporation to administer and manage the strata scheme. MC is allowed to establish Subsidiary Management Corporation (Sub-MC) to manage limited common property and the designation of limited common property for different interest of parcel proprietors especially for mixdevelopment properties. Although the frameworks and procedures to establish the subsidiary management corporation were introduced under the Circular of JUPEM in 2017, however the number of establishment for Sub-MC is still low as there is only Sub-MC in Malaysia was proposed to be formed at 1 Mont’ Kiara mixed-use stratified development. Quantitative method and descriptive analysis were used in this research. Result shows that the management body has the knowledge in forming limited common property in their strata scheme. However, the low number in forming limited common property might due to problems in the procedure. Therefore, common pool resource theory was applied to describe the benefit in forming the limited common property

This work makes a theoretical contribution to our understanding of the strategic mechanisms that enable subsidiary management and union agency to exploit ambiguities in the subnational competitive context impacting labour flexibility–security concerns. In so doing, the article contributes to the distinctiveness of employment relations through scrutiny of the internal regime competition that fosters political games in multinational corporations (MNCs). Studying the dynamics, we identify the set of structuring conditions governing political games and explain why some workplace regimes generate social compromises whilst others do not. We reveal a set of strategic conditions (i.e. technology, embeddedness and MNC control) upon which compromise is built in six German and Belgian subsidiaries of four MNCs. Our analysis suggests that subsidiary control modes through expatriates and local embeddedness act as key mechanisms via which the effects of wider strategic drivers influence the form of social compromise.

Multinationals experienced significant legitimacy challenges in less-developed countries between 1945 and 1970. Corporate responses to these challenges cover three distinct periods. Unsuccessful postwar attempts focusing on colonial welfare concerns were followed by pragmatic endeavors intended to repair corporate reputations by Africanizing senior management. By the 1960s, this had become a common approach to legitimization. The challenges of Africanizing ethnocentric multinationals led to organizational changes: internationally diversified multinationals were better able to decentralize subsidiary management, while the late 1960s saw regionally focused multinationals absorbed by more diversified multinationals. Organizational survival was directly linked to legitimacy advantages derived from Africanization.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relevant aspects that influence foreign subsidiary’s performance and remain how they retain competitiveness in international markets during economic crisis. To investigate this effect, this research analyzes the behavior of Japanese subsidiaries located in European countries during the pre- and post-crisis periods that started in the USA in 2008 and spread all over the world. Design/methodology/approach This is a quantitative study with an analysis based on longitudinal data of foreign subsidiaries of Japanese multinational firms during the period 2006-2013. It applies a multiple linear regression with panel data using fixed effects models. Findings The findings show that within-firm factors related to local experiential knowledge, market entry through joint ventures with partners from the same nationality, and subsidiary management with a team of expatriates all have a positive impact on subsidiary performance during times of economic crisis. Moreover, within-country factors involving macroeconomic aspects related to inflation rate and population income indicators show a negative impact on performance. Finally, the results confirm that subsidiary performance is higher in the pre-crisis period, showing the importance of considering economic crisis aspects in longitudinal studies. Practical implications The result has implications for managers of multinational firms to understand which factors most impact the success of their foreign subsidiaries during times of economic crisis. In this way, managers can, with greater confidence, decide to reach the most important performance indicator in subsidiary management. Originality/value The majority of studies on economic crisis is based on an economic perspective and mostly investigates Asian and Argentinean crises. When considering a firm-level perspective, most research studies conducted on a subsidiary level are cross-sectional or use survival as a measure of performance. This paper applies a longitudinal study using subsidiary-level data and analyzes performance by sales and productivity measurement. In addition, it investigates whether or not within-country and within-firm factors impacted subsidiary performance during the 2008 economic crisis.

The purpose of this chapter is to present a literature review of the published journal articles, from 1975 to 2016, related to the topic of expatriate staffing in foreign subsidiaries of MNCs. This chapter explains the main ideas, major findings and core limitations of the 37 articles searched via Web of Science™ Core Collection. Then, it gives the main ideas of other 32 articles found as a result of a legacy search to expand the review. The authors found that the number of firms/cases and parent/host countries in the studies is often limited, which makes it hard to generalize the findings. As revealed in recent studies, the results indicate that MNCs choose local-hired foreign managers for their subsidiary management teams as well as locals and expatriates. It is believed that this review will act as a guide for postgraduates, researchers, academicians, and professionals for their future work.
