Volunteering in culture within the projects of the German Reading Room of A. M. Gorky Regional Library

The experience of mutually beneficial cooperation of the German Reading Room and volunteers is discussed. Various forms of club and project activities are analyzed to be addressed when managing volunteering.

Journals’ hidden self-citation as the problem of publication ethics

Twenty two science Russian periodicals in informatics and library studies are selected for the bibliometrical analysis of key journal indicators, including publication activity of the same journals’ editorial staff. For the first time for domestic journals, the study reveals hidden self-citation when editorial members include links to their journal from other publications. The available instruments of scientometrical databases, including Web of Science and Scopus, and the national system Russian Science Citation Index do not enable to identify this form of self-citation. The mentioned manipulations are aimed at boosting journal rating. In several cases, intensive and unjustified citation by journals’ editorial staff in other periodicals which we consider the violation of publication ethical principles, is revealed.

Advanced professional education for library staff: Criteria for program selection and compromises

The quality of programs in library and information activity offered by various advanced professional training centers are discussed along with the issues and vectors of advanced training of the RNPLS&T staff. The RNPLS&T has to choose between expensive courses when new knowledge and skills are guaranteed, and online express courses (fast, easy, cheaply) where no new competences are guaranteed though employees get standard certificates. This trend facilitates establishing more and more online training centers that are just making money due to the demand for standardized certification. The double standards of education programs evaluation influence the quality of knowledge, though documented and certified. The authors argue that the above mentioned educational organizations have to be controlled, the more so, as the libraries are to accomplish their staff appraisal.

Zones of major ethical tension for the students’ dealing with information: The case analysis based on the «academic fraud triangle» AT

The findings of the study revealed the heightened tension zones for the students’ dealing with information based on checking graduation theses texts for matching content at Ryazan S. Yesenin State University. The case analysis was applied as the main method of investigation. Generalized data, obtained as the result of four cases analysis, demonstrate that the highest tension is observed in the area of the academic ethos values like honesty, respect and responsibility.

The collection of rare publications in local history of Kostanay Regional Universal Scientific Library

The origins and characteristics of the rare book collection of L. Tolstoy Scientific Library are discussed. The focus is made of the unique publications in the local history of the late 19-th – eary 20-th century. The publications cover the history of the region and comprising vast document array. Several publications are described in detail, e. g. «Migrant small-holders in Turgay Oblast», «Essays in the Natural History of the 1- st and 2-тв Maurzum volost of Turgay Oblast», statistical reports, land management instructions, «The Proceedings of Kustanay Society of Local Lore and History», etc. The problem of the collection preservation and digitization is discussed.

Developing solution for implementing IRBIS LAS on the PHP platform

Designing a cross-platform software for implementing IRBIS LAS on the PHP platform is discussed. The new print format language interpreter for IRBIS LAS based on J-ISIS and CISIS formatting language features and capabilities, is also developed.

Checking library collection enables to analyze its composition as exemplified by the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts Research Library

The Library of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is rich in rare and unique publications, and those of memorial value. The collection checking envisages visual revision and analysis of every book, and during this process the specialists revealed a number of valuable publications for further research. Also all registered publication went through the stage of initial collection specification (e.g., Rumyantsev museum collection, collection of the New Western Arts Museum, memorial libraries, etc). Currently, this information has been being entered into the e-catalog. This will enable to verify special arrays within the Research Library’s collection and simplify investigations into historical and memorial book collections and individual valuable publications.

The libraries’ communicating popular scientific knowledge

The author examines how the public libraries could promote scientific knowledge. M. Lermontov Interdistrict Centralized Library System develops programs targeted at different population groups. The project activity is being accomplished in partnership with academic and research institutions, and universities.
