To document knowledge and attitudes regarding sexuality and sexual practices of male adolescent high school students in Lima, Peru, a self-administered, anonymous survey was completed by 991 male adolescents aged 12-19 as part of a School-Based Sex Education Intervention model. Questions concerned sociodemographic information; family characteristics; personal activities; knowledge and attitudes regarding sexuality; sexual experience; and contraceptive use. Knowledge related to sexuality was limited. Males tended to mainly discuss sexuality with their male peers (49.8%). Attitudes towards sexual activity and condom use were largely positive, although some males expressed ambivalent feelings towards the latter. Of the sample, 43% had ever had sex; age at first sexual intercourse was 13 years. While 88% of the sample would use condoms, 74% also gave reasons for not using them. Sexual activity was related to age, ever having repeated a grade, living with only one parent or in a mixed family, activities such as going to parties, use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, and viewing pornographic videos or magazines. Many male adolescents were at risk of causing an unintended pregnancy or acquiring an STD.

Resumo: Este estudo objetivou verificar o papel da escola sobre a prática de prevenção e combate ao HIV/AIDS por meio de ações/programas de educação em saúde na sala de aula, e fornecer subsídios para a realização de intervenções educativas aos estudantes do Ensino Médio. Um estudo qualitativo, transversal e descritivo foi realizado através da aplicação de questionários estruturados e ações programadas na escola. Identificou-se pouco conhecimento dos alunos sobre a temática e, nesse contexto, observou-se a necessidade de inserção da temática na sala de aula e para além dela, articulando família, escola, sociedade e governo municipal com o intuito de disseminar informações e a aplicabilidade entre elas, de modo a aproximar a comunidade à realidade epidemiológica da cidade. Por fim, ficou evidente a aceitação da sociedade, demonstrando que essas práticas podem ser estimuladoras e validadas como ferramentas de promoção da cultura dos cuidados com a saúde em sala de aula.Palavras-chave: Educação em saúde; HIV/AIDS; Metodologias ativas; Projeto integrador. Sex education beyond the classroom: educational intervention about HIV/AIDS for high school studentsAbstract: This study aimed to verify the school’s role on the practice of preventing and combating HIV/AIDS through health education actions/programs in the classroom and providing subsidies for carrying out educational interventions for high school students. In the United States, sex education in schools varies significantly across districts. Many schools operate without state-guided health education curricula, leaving decisions up to individual districts. The purpose of this study was to explore what type of sex education is being offered in U.S. high schools in addition to assessing the frequency of condom access and contraceptive referral. A total of 772 high school superintendents were surveyed with a response rate of 40.4% ( n = 297). Data show most districts teach comprehensive sex education (63%), while only 7% of districts offer condoms to high school students. Twenty-nine percent of superintendents reported their district refers out for contraceptive services to a variety of agencies. School nurses can use this information to inform health policy discussions in their district as well as advocate for awareness among district officials regarding existing health service offerings.

Parental attitude is an important factor for adolescents to establish healthy–unhealthy relationships with their environment and to develop a tendency for violence. This study was performed to determine parental attitudes perceived by high school students and their tendency for violence and the affecting factors. This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted with 2,000 high school students. Data were collected by a questionnaire, Parental Attitude Scale, and Violence Tendency Scale. In the study, it was found that mean scores of the students for democratic attitude were higher than protective or authoritarian attitudes. Factors such as grade level, age, sex, education level of the parents, family type, income level, number of siblings, birth order, state of being exposed to domestic violence, and tendency for violence affected perceived parental attitude. It was also determined that violence tendency of the students was at a moderate level, and students who were studying at higher grades, who were among an older age group in parallel to grade level, who were males, whose mothers were employed, whose fathers had less than an primary education, whose incomes were less than the expenses, and who experienced domestic violence showed more tendency for violence. In addition, it was determined that tendency for violence decreased as democratic parental attitudes perceived by the students increased, and tendency for violence increased as protective and authoritarian attitude increased. It is recommended to plan regular family training programs to inform families about the relationship between family attitude and tenancy for violence, to strengthen the communication between parents and children, and to support and improve parenting skills of the parents.

A major source of sexual learning is sex education classes in school (Levy 1992). In the absence of effective sex education, the immature adolescent must make major decisions without adequate knowledge (Bjorklund 1998). This descriptive survey correlation method of research was undertaken to come up with findings on attitude towards sex of Villaba National High School students. It was also its purpose that this study may be instrumental in the proper guidance of the said students particularly in the area of adolescent sexuality. Simple frequency counts were used to determine their Attitude towardss the various aspects of sexual relationships and average scores determined their Attitude towards the ten aspects of sexual relationships. Z-test was used to test the null hypothesis which states that, “there is no significant difference between the attitudes of boys and girls on the ten aspects of sexual relationships,” at the significance level of 0.05. This research finally concluded that there are differences between the attitudes of boys and girls towards the various aspects of sexual relationships particularly on courtship, petting, pre-marital sex, and trial marriage or live-in. Z-test established a significant difference between the attitudes of boys and girls on the ten aspects of sexual relationships. Keywords - attitude towards sex, sex education, instruction and guidance, adolescent sexuality, sexual relationships.

Survey data from 1,071 high school students in a large southern city indicated that high school sports participants were more likely to be sexually active than were nonparticipants. This result was true for both males (66% vs. 52%) and females (52% vs. 36%) and was independent of the sport in which the adolescent participated. This finding suggests that high school teams may provide an opportunity for reaching teenagers in need of sex education counseling.
