The meaning of ‘trade’, i.e. transferring or rendering of money's worth in consideration of money, the entitlement of the purchaser of goods to receive true weight and just measure and consideration of the importance of quantity control to the packer are discussed. The legal responsibilities of packers of merchandise, historical and contemporary, are explained and the questions of whether the Weights and Measures Act 1963 oppresses the packer who appreciates the fundamentals of business economics, requires higher standards of quantitative accuracy than heretofore, and favours the consumer at the expense of the packer and/or the distributor are considered. The performance factors of automatic weighing and measuring devices, measuring to determine weight and vice versa, weight representation dependent on the count per unit mass, checkweighing and the fundamentals of dependency are all discussed. The role of the Inspector of Weights and Measures with reference to the mechanics of commodity quantitative control is discussed: where to check, how often, and to what extent. Valuation is made of the results of checking. Consideration is also given to the liabilities of, and defences available to, traders and whether or not deficiency tolerances should be laid down.

Abstract This paper examines two parallel discussions of scientific modeling which have invoked experimentation in addressing the role of models in scientific inquiry. One side discusses the experimental character of models, whereas the other focuses on their exploratory uses. Although both relate modeling to experimentation, they do so differently. The former has considered the similarities and differences between models and experiments, addressing, in particular, the epistemic value of materiality. By contrast, the focus on exploratory modeling has highlighted the various kinds of exploratory functions of models in the early stages of inquiry. These two perspectives on modeling are discussed through a case study in the field of synthetic biology. The research practice in question explores biological control by making use of an ensemble of different epistemic means: mathematical models and simulations, synthetic genetic circuits and intracellular measuring devices, and finally electronic circuits. We argue that the study of exploratory modeling should trace the ways different epistemic means, in different materialities, are being combined over time. Finally, the epistemic status of such novel investigative objects as synthetic genetic circuits is evaluated, with the conclusion that they can function as both experiments and models.

AbstractWe aimed to determine whether basal concentrations of testosterone, cortisol or the ratio testosterone/cortisol were related to sweat Na+ loss, sweat Na+ concentration ([Na+]) and sweat rate during exercise. Twenty-two female elite soccer players participated in the study. Testosterone and cortisol were measured in blood samples before exercise. Sweat samples were collected during a training session (~20°C, ~30% RH, and ~0.55 m/s of wind speed) to measure sweat [Na+]. Sweat rate was determined by considering the difference between post-and pre-body weight, along with the amount of liquid consumed. During exercise, sweat Na+ loss (0.33[0.19] g/h) and sweat rate (0.49[0.20] L/h) were related to basal testosterone concentration (1.4[0.4] pg/mL) (r=0.54; r=0.55, respectively; p<0.05), but not with basal cortisol concentration (119.2[24.2] ng/mL) nor testosterone/cortisol ratio (0.012[0.003]) (p>0.05). However, when Na+ loss was adjusted to sweat rate, no association was found between Na+ loss and testosterone (p>0.05). In addition, no differences were found between players with high vs. low Na+ loss adjusted to sweat loss in menstrual phase or intensity during exercise (p>0.05). In conclusion, these results suggest that in these specific environmental conditions, basal levels of testosterone might increase sweat rate and therefore, the amount of Na+ lost during exercise in elite women soccer players.

Two potential mechanisms, reduced skin blood flow (SBF) and sweating rate (SR), may be responsible for elevated intestinal temperature (Tin) during exercise after bed rest and spaceflight. Seven men underwent 13 days of 6° head-down bed rest. Pre- and post-bed rest, subjects completed supine submaximal cycle ergometry (20 min at 40% and 20 min at 65% of pre-bed rest supine peak exercise capacity) in a thermoneutral room. After bed rest, Tin was elevated at rest (+0.31 ± 0.12°C) and at the end of exercise (+0.33 ± 0.07°C). Percent increase in SBF during exercise was less after bed rest (211 ± 53 vs. 96 ± 31%; P ≤ 0.05), SBF/Tin threshold was greater (37.09 ± 0.16 vs. 37.33 ± 0.13°C; P ≤ 0.05), and slope of SBF/Tin tended to be reduced (536 ± 184 vs. 201 ± 46%/°C; P = 0.08). SR/Tin threshold was delayed (37.06 ± 0.11 vs. 37.34 ± 0.06°C; P ≤ 0.05), but the slope of SR/Tin(3.45 ± 1.22 vs. 2.58 ± 0.71 mg · min−1 · cm−2 · °C−1) and total sweat loss (0.42 ± 0.06 vs. 0.44 ± 0.08 kg) were not changed. The higher resting and exercise Tin and delayed onset of SBF and SR suggest a centrally mediated elevation in the thermoregulatory set point during bed rest exposure.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.
