Ring-opening metathesis polymerization was used to modify organic soluble gold nanoparticles with redox-active polymers. A gel-permeation chromatography study revealed that each nanoparticle is modified with approximately 11 polymer chains. Electrochemical studies of nanoparticles modified with block copolymers of two different redox-active groups revealed that each monomer is electrochemically accessible, while no current rectification was observed.

Binary organic-inorganic mesoporous hybrid materials were prepared by covalntly grafting Lanthanide (III) (Eu) trifluoroacetylaceton (TAA) complexes to the ordered meosoporous silica SBA-15 via hydrothermal method and hydrolysis and co-polycondensation method with the surfactant P123 and TEOS. Besides, Novel ternary lanthanide (III) (Eu) organic-inorganic-polymeric mesoporous hybrid materials have been synthesized as well through the introduction of the organic polymer PMAA to the binary system with covalent bond. We investigated the thermal stability and luminescence properties of hybrids and found that the ternary hybrid materials exhibit better thermal stability and stronger emission intensity. Furthermore, compared with the binary mesoporous material Eu (TAA-SBA-15)3, the ternary mesoporous material Eu (TAA-SBA-15)3PMMA exhibits the characteristic emission of the Eu3+ ion with a higher luminescence Intensity, suggesting that the introduction of polymer PMMA into the mesoporous matrix is of benefit for the sensitization of Eu3+ luminescence, by replacing H2O groups that can quench the luminescence of Eu3+ ion.

ABSTRACTPorous coatings at the surface of living cells have application in human cell transplantation by controlling the transport of biomolecules to and from the cells. Sol-gel-derived mesoporous silica materials are good candidates for such coatings, owing to their biocompatibility, facile solution-based synthesis conditions, and thin film formation. Diffusion and transport across the coating correlates to long-range microstructural properties, including pore size distribution, porosity, and pore morphology. Here, we investigated collagen-fibril matrices with known biocompatibility to serve as templating systems for directed silica deposition. Type 1 collagen oligomers derived from porcine skin are extensively characterized such that we can predict and customize the final collagen-fibril matrix with respect to fibril density, interfibril branching and viscoelasticity. We show that these matrices template and direct the deposition of mesoporous silica at the level of individual collagen fibrils. We varied the fibril density, silicic acid concentration, and time of exposure to silicifying solution and characterized the resulting hybrid materials by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and rheology. Microstructural properties of the collagen-fibril template are preserved in the silica surface of hybrid materials. Results for three different collagen fibril densities, corresponding to shear storage moduli of 200 Pa, 1000 Pa, and 1600 Pa, indicate that increased fibril density increases the absolute amount of templated silica when all other silica synthesis conditions are kept constant. Additionally, mechanical properties of the hybrid material are dominated by the presence of the silica coating rather than the starting collagen matrix stiffness.

The new cyanido-bridged mixed valent FeII/CoIII macrocyclic complexes [L2CoIII(μ-NC)FeII(CN)5]– and trans-[L2CoIII(μ-NC)FeII(CN)4(μ-CN)CoIIIL2]2+ have been prepared and characterized spectroscopically. The trinuclear complex trans-[L2Co(μ-NC)Fe(CN)4(μ-CN)CoL2](ClO4)2·11H2O has been characterized crystallographically. The di- and trinuclear complexes exhibit metal-to-metal charge transfer transitions characteristic of Class II mixed valent chromophores and their redox and spectroscopic properties have been analyzed by Hush theory. The thiophene group attached to the macrocycle L2 in these complexes may serve as a precursor to conducting polythiophene-based hybrid materials incorporating redox active transition metal ions.
