Second-mode tuned mass dampers in base-isolated structures for reduction of floor acceleration

Abstract This study investigates localization phenomena in two identical nonlinear tuned mass dampers (TMDs) installed on an elastic structure, which is subjected to external, harmonic excitation. In the theoretical analysis, the mode shapes of the system are determined, and the modal equations of motion are derived using modal analysis. These equations are demonstrated as forming an autoparametric system in which external excitation directly acts on the first and third vibration modes, whereas the second vibration mode is indirectly excited due to the nonlinear coupling with the other modes. Van der Pol’s method is employed to obtain the frequency response curves for both physical and modal coordinates. The two TMDs vibrate in phase for the first and third modes, but vibrate out of phase for the second mode. Consequently, when all modes appear, the two TMDs may vibrate at different amplitudes, i.e., localization phenomena may occur because the TMD motions are expressed by the summation of motions for all modes. The numerical calculations clarify that the localization phenomena may occur in the two TMDs when all three modes appear simultaneously. Moreover, there are two steady-state solutions of the harmonic oscillations for the second mode with identical amplitudes; however, their phases differ by π. Hence, which TMD vibrates at higher amplitudes depends on which of these two steady-state solutions for the phase.


Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are one of the most reliable devices to control the vibration of the structure. The optimum mass ratio required for a single tuned mass damper (STMD) is evaluated corresponding to the fundamental natural frequency of the structure. The effect of STMD and Multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) on a G+20 storey structure are studied to demonstrate the damper’s effectiveness in seismic application. The location and number of tuned mass dampers are studied to give best structural performance in maximum reduction of seismic response for El Centro earthquake data. The analysis results from SAP 2000 software tool shows damper weighing 2.5% of the total weight of the structure effectively reduce the response of the structure. Study shows that introduction of 4-MTMD at top storey can effectively reduce the response by 10% more in comparison to single tuned mass damper. The use of MTMD of same mass ratio that of STMD is more effective in seismic response.

Background: As a successive part, the paper introduces the second mode of abnormal hydrodynamic thrust slider bearings with divergent surface separations registered in the patents, where the boundary slippage is artificially designed both on the stationary surface in the inlet zone and on the whole moving surface. Objective : To introduce a second method for artificially designing the boundary slippage for the formation of abnormal hydrodynamic thrust slider bearings. Methods: The analytical results are presented for the introduced bearings. The performances of the bearings are demonstrated. Result: : In appropriate operating conditions, the introduced bearings can have considerable loadcarrying capacities with low friction coefficients on the scales 10-3 or 10-4. With the weakening of the boundary slippage on the moving surface, the load-carrying capacities of the bearings are all increased, while the friction coefficients of the bearings are all reduced. Conclusion: When the boundary slippage is present both on the stationary surface in the bearing inlet zone and on the whole moving surface, abnormal hydrodynamic thrust slider bearings can be designed with the surface separation in the bearing inlet zone lower than that in the bearing outlet zone. The performances of these bearings are quite satisfactory.

This study presents an evaluation of floor acceleration demands for the design of rigid and flexible acceleration-sensitive nonstructural components in buildings, calculated using the most recent Mexico City seismic design provisions, released in 2017. This evaluation includes two approaches: (1) a simplified continuous elastic model and (2) using recordings from 10 instrumented buildings located in Mexico City. The study found that peak floor elastic acceleration demands imposed on rigid nonstructural components into buildings situated in Mexico City might reach values of 4.8 and 6.4 times the peak ground acceleration at rock and soft sites, respectively. The peak elastic acceleration demands imposed on flexible nonstructural components in all floors, estimated using floor response spectra, might be four times larger than the maximum acceleration of the floor at the point of support of the component for buildings located in rock and soft soil. Comparison of results from the two approaches with the current seismic design provisions revealed that the peak acceleration demands and floor response spectra computed with the current 2017 Mexico City seismic design provisions are, in general, adequate.

Wheelchairs are an important means of transportation for the elderly and disabled. However, the movement of wheelchairs on long curbs and stairs is restricted. In this study, a wheelchair for climbing stairs was developed based on a mechanical transmission system that rotates the entire driving part through a link structure and an actuator to change the speed. The first mode drives the caterpillar, and the second mode drives the wheels. When driving on flat ground, it uses landing gears and wheels, and when climbing stairs, it uses the caterpillar; accordingly, a stable driving is possible. The stability of the transmission is confirmed through stress analysis. The method used in our study makes it is possible to manufacture lightweight wheelchairs because a single motor drives both the wheel and caterpillar through the transmission system.

AbstractNonlinear dynamics of a rotating flexible slender beam with embedded active elements is studied in the paper. Mathematical model of the structure considers possible moderate oscillations thus the motion is governed by the extended Euler–Bernoulli model that incorporates a nonlinear curvature and coupled transversal–longitudinal deformations. The Hamilton’s principle of least action is applied to derive a system of nonlinear coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) of motion. The embedded active elements are used to control or reduce beam oscillations for various dynamical conditions and rotational speed range. The control inputs generated by active elements are represented in boundary conditions as non-homogenous terms. Classical linear proportional (P) control and nonlinear cubic (C) control as well as mixed ($$P-C$$ P - C ) control strategies with time delay are analyzed for vibration reduction. Dynamics of the complete system with time delay is determined analytically solving directly the PDEs by the multiple timescale method. Natural and forced vibrations around the first and the second mode resonances demonstrating hardening and softening phenomena are studied. An impact of time delay linear and nonlinear control methods on vibration reduction for different angular speeds is presented.
