There is limited research that considers students with migratory background cultural characteristics within vocational counseling processes in high schools of the United States, Latin America, and South Europe. A systematic literature review was made, guided by the question: In young migrants and second-generation migrants, how vocational counseling influences the achievement of being admitted into a university, comparing their life trajectories during secondary and high school? A total of ten articles, out of three hundred eleven initially found, were selected based on a protocol for the literature review (available on request). All these articles belong to the United States context. One also considered the Spain reality. Based on the protocol used, neither another Southern Europe article, nor any article on the Latin American context was selected. All the analyzed articles pointed up the central role of counseling processes regarding students' vocational decisions. Nonetheless, there is not much attention to counseling processes given to students with a migratory background and their specific needs. Among others, this fact reveals one of the failures of the system in giving post-secondary opportunities to these students. Limitations and recommendations to improve the vocational counseling processes and their influence on the achievement of admission into a university for these students are presented. Besides, some gender differences and the transcendental role of families in the vocational decisions of students are analyzed within the literature review.

Recognizing the important “gatekeeper” role of clergy in relation to the mental health field, the purpose of this research was to identify, among pastors of clients at a private Christian counseling service, characteristics which would predict the degree to which those pastors were open to interaction with mental health resources. The concept of Openness included both interactive behaviors (e.g., referrals) and attitudes suggestive of a willingness to interact. After establishing the reliability of the criterion variable, mailed questionnaires obtained data on 73 pastors of recent clinic clients. Using stepwise multiple regression, three of 10 predictor variables (pastors’ counseling activity, education, and style of ministry) were found significant predictors of Open Behavior, p < .001, accounting for 53% of the total variance. Open Behavior was greater among therapeutically-active, well-educated, and non-isolated pastors. The relationships of other variables (e.g., denomination, congregation size, and whether pastors had referred parishioners to the counseling service) to Openness were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and simple correlation. Implications for local program planning and future research were discussed.

Humanitarian development completely provides an image of the demands of human life and competence in humans. Just like in school, students do not only need study guidance but are equipped with moral and career guidance. The role of counseling in schools is very important to advance the achievement of educational goals.Besides that, services in schools regarding counseling need to be improved. To develop the potential of students and help solve the problems they face, there needs to be an organized, programmed and directed guidance and counseling service activity. In addition, expertise is required from the supervisor, and the availability of adequate funds and facilities. The main attention of schools, which is usually students with problems, is now focused on students who are normal, have no problems, the largest number and have the potential to be developed.Serving students in schools, especially those who help a lot, need to increase the number of professional guidance teachers who graduate from undergraduate guidance and counseling. This will maintain the image of the school and the image of guidance and counseling that has been tainted by many since it is done by non-teachers who do not work professionally.
