Intraoral periapical radiograph examination is the additional examination which is the most widely used in Dentistry. This radiograph examination using an x-ray ionizing radiation with low LET (Linear Energy Transfer), and may affect submandibular salivary gland. Ionizing radiation exposure can cause damage by inducing a series of changes at the molecular and cellular level. This study aimed to prove the effects of x-ray ionizing radiation with low LET towards the catalase activity of Rattus norvegicus strain Wistar’s submandibular gland. The subjects were 28 male Wistar rats and divided into 4 groups (n=7). Three groups were exposed 4, 8 and 14 times to radiation with 0.002 µSv for each exposure. The catalase activity of each rat was examined by a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni test. The results showed the average of catalase activity on Wistar rat’s submandibular gland, respectively for: 0.150±0.0895 (KK), 0.1405±0.0607 (K1), 0.1228±0.0290 (K2), 0.1227±0.0556 (K3). Data showed significant differences of catalase activity between test groups, but showed not significant differences of catalase activity between each groups of Rattus norvegicus strain Wistar’s submandibular gland. In this study concluded decreased catalase activity of Rattus norvegicus strain Wistar’s submandibular gland resulting from x-rays ionizing radiation by 4 times, 8 times and 14 times exposures.

Cat is the definitive host of Taenia taeniaeformis (T. taeniaeformis). Cysticercus fasciolaris (C. fasciolaris), the larval stage of T. taeniaeformis, develops in small rodents which act as intermediate host. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of C. fasciolaris in brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) in the densely human populated parishes, St. George’s and St. David’s of Grenada, West Indies. One hundred and seventy rats were trapped near the residential areas from May to July, 2017 and examined for C. fasciolaris in their liver. Of the 170 rats 115 (67.6%, CI 95% from 60.1 to 74.6) were positive for the larval stage of T. taeniaeformis. One to three cysts were observed in each liver, containing a single larva in each cyst. The prevalence was 77.9% in St. George and 59.1% in St. David which is a significant difference (p<0.05) between the two parishes under study. Based on gender, prevalence in males was 60.9% and females 74.7%. Significant difference was observed between young and adult rats (p=0.03). Prevalence in young rats was 45.0% compared to adults (70.7%). Further study of risk assessment in the cat population in areas of the present research is strongly suggested.

Abstract: Infertility is an inability of couples to reproduce after carrying out sexual intercourses for at least a year without using any contraceptives. There are 10-15% couples worldwide who experience infertility problems and almost one half of them is on men. Spermatozoa qualities including concentration, motility, and morphology are used as an indicator for men’s fertility. The utilization of herbal medicine (i.e. Eurycoma longifolia Jack extracts) is now being an alternative way to improve fertility among the community. This study was carried out to find the effects of Eurycoma longifolia Jack on spermatozoa qualities. This experimental study was conducted to nine male wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing from 200-250 grams, aging from 12-15 months. These nine adult rats were divided into 3 groups of 3 rats each. 400 and 600 mg/kg/day of Eurycoma longifolia Jack extracts were orally administrated to group 1 and 2 respectively, while group 3 were treated as control group. After 50 days, the animals of group 1, 2 and 3 were sacrificed. As a result, there is an improvement in qualities of spermatozoa which are statistically significant (p<0,05) in group 2. Thus, provide the beneficial effects of 600mg/kg Eurycoma longifolia Jack extracts on the qualities of spermatozoa.Keywords: pasak bumi, spermatozoaAbstrak: Infertilitas adalah ketidakmampuan pasangan untuk dapat hamil setelah satu tahun berhubungan intim tanpa menggunakan kontrasepsi. Kualitas spermatozoa meliputi konsentrasi, motilitas dan morfologi spermatozoa merupakan salah satu indikator fertilitas pada pria. Penggunaan tanaman herbal atau yang lebih dikenal jamu telah menjadi pengobatan alternatif di masyarakat. Tanaman herbal yang dimaksud adalah pasak bumi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efek dari esktrak pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack) terhadap kualitas spermatozoa. Penelitian ini menggunakan 9 ekor tikus wistar jantan (Rattus norvegicus) dengan berat badan 200-250 g berumur 12-15 bulan. Sembilan ekor wistar dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok, dan satu kelompok terdiri dari tiga ekor tikus wistar. Penelitian ini dilaksankan selama 50 hari. Esktrak pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack) diberikan dengan dosis 400mg/kgBB per hari pada perlakuan 1 dan dosis 600 mg/kgBB per hari pada perlakuan 2. Setelah 50 hari hewan coba pada kelompok kontrol, perlakuan 1 dan perlakuan 2 diterminasi. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan terjadi peningkatan kualitas spermatozoa yang signifikan secara statistik (p<0,05) pada perlakuan 2 terhadap kelompok kontrol. Hasil tersebut menunjukan bahwa Esktrak pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack) pada dosis 600 mg/kgBB dapat meningkatkan kualitas spermatozoa.Kata kunci: pasak bumi, spermatozoa

Biological functions of Ca in mitochondrial granules have been reported by a number of investigators. It is said that mitochondrial granules of chondrocytes, osteoblasts and osteocytes in rat epiphyseal growth plate with regard to bone calcification and these granules of osteoclasts at bone-resorbing site play an important role of Ca-transport. However, these results were reported about the first stage of calcification in rat epiphyseal growth plate, so that the changes of bone tissues in adult rats seem to be not always the same.The purpose of this work is, by electron probe X-ray microanalysis method, to do the elemental analysis in mitochondrial granules of osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts incident to experimental tooth movement in adult rats, and to compare them with these analysis in control groups.

SUMMARY Adult rats which had been previously sterilized by means of X-rays were hypophysectomized a fortnight after the onset of continuous vaginal cornification (which begins within 40 days of X-irradiation [Mandl & Zuckerman, 1956]). The animals, including non-irradiated hypophysectomized controls, were killed at periods of 5–70 days after hypophysectomy. Cornified cells disappeared from the vaginal smear of non-irradiated rats within 3, and of irradiated rats within 4 days after hypophysectomy. The ovaries involuted rapidly in both groups of animals. Stromal cells decreased in size and post-hypophysectomy 'deficiency cells' appeared. On the other hand, the rate of uterine involution was slower in the X-irradiated animals after hypophysectomy than in the non-irradiated hypophysectomized controls. This finding indicates that in the absence of the pituitary, the X-irradiated ovary can produce more oestrogen than a non-irradiated ovary, or that the oestrogen it produces is biologically more active. After treatment with gonadotrophin, the 'deficiency cells' in the ovaries of both groups of animals disappeared. The X-irradiated hypophysectomized animals responded to the gonadotrophin less vigorously (as judged by an increase in ovarian and uterine size) than did the hypophysectomized controls.

Rat whole serum, albumin, globulins, and fibrinogen were labeled with fluorescent dyes (sulforhodamine B. CI No. 45100 and fluorescein isothiocyanate); albumin was also tagged with radioactive iodine (I131) and tritium (H3). In addition heterologous albumin was also labeled with fluorescent dyes and radioiodine. The proteins were intravenously injected in prepubertal, pubertal and adult rats, and their decay in the circulation and histological distribution in the testis and epididymis was studied. As controls other animals were similarly injected with free labels alone and with labeled denatured and degraded albumin; also unlabeled homologous and heterologus albumins were administered followed by incubation of both organs with the corresponding labeled antisera applying the Coons' technique. It was observed: 1) with the exception of fibrinogen, labeled serum proteins rapidly appeared in the lumina of vessels, diffused extravascularly in the intertubular spaces and finally arrived inbetween the germinal cells and in the lumina of seminiferous tubules. Also labeled material was present in the lumen of epididymal canaliculi but not in the ductus deferens. 2) This extravascular and intratubular diffusion was parallel to the fast component of the time decline curve of labeled homologous serum proteins in the circulation. 3) There was no great difference between young and adult rats in the extravascular diffusion process, but intratubular passage was higher in pubertal and adult animals. 4) Control experiments revealed time presence of some fluorescent material only in the vessels and macrophages, whereas the immunofluorescent technique showed to very similar localization of unlabeled proteins to that provided by the injection of directly labeled proteins.

The elemental composition of different types of keratohyalin granules from the epidermis of newborn and adult rats was studied by means of an EMMA-4 analytical electron microscope, equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. An absolute quantitation of the sulphur concentration in keratohyalin granules was performed. The results demonstrate that epidermal keratohyalin granules are chemically heterogeneous. A type of keratohyalin granule present in the nuclei and cytoplasm of epidermal cells from both newborn and adult rats - termed single granules - is rich in sulphur, having a content of 2-5-3-6%. Other types of keratohyalin granules, which differ in newborn and adult rats, contain a sulphur-poor component; they often have a sulphur-rich component as well. The sulphur-poor keratohyalin contains 0-6-0-9% sulphur. It is suggested that the sulphur-rich keratohyalin granules are the source of the peripheral envelope protein of cornified cells.
