AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine the effect of scenario-based learning (SBL) compared to traditional demonstration method on the development of patient safety behavior in first year nursing students. During the 2016–2017 academic year, the Fundamentals of Nursing course curriculum contained the teaching of demonstration method (n=168). In the academic year 2017–2018 was performed with SBL method in the same context (n=183). Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that assesses the same three skills was implemented in both academic terms to provide standardization so that students could evaluated in terms of patient safety competency. It was found that students’ performance of some of the steps assessed were not consistently between the demonstration and SBL methods across the three skills. There was a statistically significant difference between demonstration method and SBL method for students’ performing the skill steps related to patient safety in intramuscular injection (p<0.05) Our results suggest that the integration of SBL into the nursing skills training may be used as a method of teaching in order to the development of patient safety skills.

Abstract Aims To understand the experiences of nursing students and academic staff of an intervention to decrease burnout and increase retention of early career nurses, in order to identify acceptability and feasibility in a single centre. Background Internationally, retention of nurses is a persistent challenge but there is a dearth of knowledge about the perspectives of stakeholders regarding the acceptability and feasibility of interventions to resolve the issue. This study reports an intervention comprising of mindfulness, psychological skills training and cognitive realignment to prepare participants for early careers as nurses. Methods This is an explanatory sequential mixed methods study, conducted by a UK university and healthcare organisation. Participants were final year pre-registration nursing students (n = 74) and academics (n = 7) involved in the implementation of the intervention. Pre and post measures of acceptability were taken using a questionnaire adapted from the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test was used to assess change in acceptability over time. Qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, focus groups and field notes were thematically analysed, adhering to COREQ guidelines. Data were collected February to December 2019. Results One hundred and five questionnaires, 12 interviews with students and 2 focus groups engaging 7 academic staff were completed. The intervention was perceived as generally acceptable with significant positive increases in acceptability scores over time. Student nurses perceived the intervention equipped them with skills and experience that offered enduring personal benefit. Challenges related to the practice environment and academic assessment pressures. Reported benefits align with known protective factors against burnout and leaving the profession. Conclusion Planning is needed to embed the intervention into curricula and maximise relationships with placement partners. Evaluating acceptability and feasibility offers new knowledge about the value of the intervention for increasing retention and decreasing burnout for early career nurses. Wider implementation is both feasible and recommended by participants.

BACKGROUND The ability of nursing undergraduates to communicate effectively with health care providers, patients, and their family members is crucial to their nursing professions as these can affect patient outcomes. However, the traditional use of didactic lectures for communication skills training is ineffective, and the use of standardized patients is not time- or cost-effective. Given the abilities of virtual patients (VPs) to simulate interactive and authentic clinical scenarios in secured environments with unlimited training attempts, a virtual counseling application is an ideal platform for nursing students to hone their communication skills before their clinical postings. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to develop and test the use of VPs to better prepare nursing undergraduates for communicating with real-life patients, their family members, and other health care professionals during their clinical postings. METHODS The stages of the creation of VPs included preparation, design, and development, followed by a testing phase before the official implementation. An initial voice chatbot was trained using a natural language processing engine, Google Cloud’s Dialogflow, and was later visualized into a three-dimensional (3D) avatar form using Unity 3D. RESULTS The VPs included four case scenarios that were congruent with the nursing undergraduates’ semesters’ learning objectives: (1) assessing the pain experienced by a pregnant woman, (2) taking the history of a depressed patient, (3) escalating a bleeding episode of a postoperative patient to a physician, and (4) showing empathy to a stressed-out fellow final-year nursing student. Challenges arose in terms of content development, technological limitations, and expectations management, which can be resolved by contingency planning, open communication, constant program updates, refinement, and training. CONCLUSIONS The creation of VPs to assist in nursing students’ communication skills training may provide authentic learning environments that enhance students’ perceived self-efficacy and confidence in effective communication skills. However, given the infancy stage of this project, further refinement and constant enhancements are needed to train the VPs to simulate real-life conversations before the official implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Nursing students suffer from high levels of stress related to academic assignments in addition to clinical skills training. As a psychosocial phenomenon, stress affects students’ academic achievement and wellbeing. Coping mechanisms help students deal with the challenges arising from stress.AIMS: To illustrate the level of stress and common stressors among nursing students; to describe the difference in stress level related to demographic data; and to identify coping mechanisms used by nursing students.METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the type of stress and coping strategies among nursing students. The level of stress was evaluated through Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and type of coping strategies were assessed by use of Coping Behaviours Inventory (CBI).RESULTS: Students perceived moderate level of stress, most commonly attributed to assignments and workload, teachers and nursing staff, peers and daily life, and taking care of patients. The most frequently used coping mechanism was problem solving. The study found that age, GPA, education level and residence are good predictors of the use of transference as a coping behaviour.CONCLUSION: A moderate level of stress among students illustrates the need for stress management programs and the provision of suitable support.

Background and objective: The use of technology has become the norm in nursing education. While technology has opened up for more flexible, active, student-focused teaching methods, its introduction has also brought challenges regarding its use and implementation. Recent literature has concentrated on how to best implement technology, but little attention has focused on observing student practices during technology use. Therefore, it is unknown how to optimize technology use within clinical skills training. The objective of this study was to investigate how groups of nursing students utilize a technology-based learning tool.Methods: An observational study with an exploratory design was implemented using video recordings as the data material.Results: The results indicated a high level of variability in nursing students’ performance and ability to utilize a technological tool while working in groups. The variability during clinical skills training was associated with four factors: level of competence, motivation to learn, role clarification, and collaborative problem-solving skills.Conclusions: The results of the study indicated variability in groups of nursing students’ ability to employ a technological tool during a selected procedure—namely, wound care and dressing. These findings suggest that a set of implications for faculty members should be developed. Specifically, staff and students should be prepared prior to using technology by focusing on group dynamics, group composition, development of collaborative problem-solving skills, and role modeling.

Nursing and social work education programs are seeking innovative ways to prepare students to function as collaborative members of interprofessional teams upon graduation. Communication is a key linked to a decrease in medical errors, which compromise patient safety. In response to nursing students' concerns about clinical experiences in which they had witnessed poor communication with the potential to jeopardize patient care, faculty members identified a communication skills training program designed to improve team performance. Senior nursing and social work students at the beginning of their last semester of school were trained in selected modules of the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) training program and subsequently trained their student colleagues. The goal was to emphasize communication skills and strategies in a sustainable student trainer model. Qualitative and quantitative data about participant experiences revealed significant improvement in teamwork attitudes and communication skills following the training.

Background: Simulation-based education is a widely utilized tool for experiential learning in nursing education. The aim of this study was to determine nursing students’ performance and satisfaction in the classification of pressure injuries using simulation with moulage. Methods: It is an evaluation study with a quasi-experimental, single-group, post-test design that was conducted in the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year in the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Izmir Katip Celebi University, Izmir, Turkey. In total, 66 final-year nursing students, voluntarily participated in the Assessment of Pressure Injury Course. A student characteristics form, a Pressure Injury Classification Form, and a Moulage Satisfaction and Evaluation Form were used as data collection tools. Data were entered into SPSS v. 21, and the results of the analysis were described using descriptive statistics. Results: It was found that 67.2% (n=45) of the students correctly assessed all the stages of pressure injury moulages on the standardized patients. Among the students, 62.1% (n=41) strongly agreed that their assessment skills of pressure injury improved after the simulation. The results related to students’ satisfaction indicated that 77.3% (n=51) of the students evaluated the moulages as realistic. The Mean±SD total score of students’ evaluation of moulage simulation sessions on standard patients was 4.56±0.59 (range=1-5). Conclusion: This moulage is a simple, easily accessible, low-cost, and effective tool for teaching pressure injury assessment to nursing students. It can be used in clinical skills training and clinical assessment in nursing education.

Introduction: The implementation of blended learning in nursing education is needed to provide quality and efficient learning. There is a need for an investigation of students’ experience in following blended learning especially in the subject of basic science in nursing 2 including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacology in nursing topics. This study aims to provide an ideal picture for students of the Faculty of Medicine in Indonesia. Methods: This study occupied quantitative descriptive research method with simple random sampling technique. The respondents were 93-second years students of the Faculty of Nursing, UniversitasPadjadjaran. The Learning Experience Questionnaire (LEQ) instrument was used to measure students’ experience. The data were analysed using percentage analysis. Results: More than a half of total respondents had good experience in participating in mixed learning of IDK course. Conclusions: Students’good experience may be influenced by the availability of student access to the internet, and the instructional design of the blended learning. The main obstacle in implementing the course were a large learning credit burden and extensive coverage of the learning material. Technology skills training and habituation of blended learning needs to be given by the faculty before students take part in blended learning.
