AbstractThe ease of uploading images on Instagram has meant that a whole generation grows up paying closer attention to visual language. At the same time, Instagram and other social media have come to dominate visual culture to the extent that we need to make an effort to unlearn what they have taught us. Here the internet is seen not only as a vital part of visual culture but also as a site of learning. This chapter presents a school assignment as a possible approach to online visual culture. By creating Instagram fiction, we can understand how social media operate both visually and socially. Parody and estrangement, or the Brechtian Verfremdungseffekt, are examples offered to examine a phenomenon and activate critical thinking.

Non-cisgender and non-straight identity language has long been a site of contention and evolution. There has been an increase in new non-cisgender, non-straight identity words since the creation of the internet, thanks to social media platforms like Tumblr. Tumblr in particular has been host to many conversations about identity and self-naming, though these conversations have not yet been the subject of much academic research. Through interviews and analysis of Tumblr posts, this thesis examines the emergence of new identity words, or neo-identities, used by non-cisgender and non-straight users of Tumblr. The work presents neo-identities as strategies for resisting and challenging cisheteronormative conceptions of gender and attraction, as well as sources of comfort and relief for non-cisgender/non-straight people who feel ‘broken’ and excluded from mainstream identity categories. This thesis also posits that Tumblr is uniquely suited for conversations about identity because of its potential for self-expression, community, and anonymity.

Once a site of promise for democratizing mass communication, the internet has also become a site of problematic information and polarized affect. Contrary to claims that polarization is not necessarily encouraged by social media platforms; our two-year, mixed-methods study of affect and narratives of race and national belonging in social media discourses of the 2019 Canadian and 2020 U.S. federal elections reveals clearly polarized collective political storytelling constructing conflicting meta-narratives marked by a highly affective moralizing tone and clear binaries of us versus them and good versus evil. Surprisingly, there is very little research that has drawn on either narrative emotions analysis or melodrama to understand the kinds of polarization that take place within social media platforms. This talk shares our finding; achieved through our innovative approach to affective discourse analysis developed through iterative, grounded theoretical qualitative study; that discourse communities formed according to social as well as political identities construct these polarized meta-narratives in the genre of melodrama, readily ensuring the emotional engagement of social media users through “sensationalism and predictable plot lines of good battling evil, plots and characters that do not encourage reflection, and refusal of nuance” (Loseke, 2018, p. 517).

This article examines the growing use of digital-networked images, specifically online self-portraits or “selfies”, as deliberate and personal acts of political expression and the ways in which meaning evolves and expands from their presence on the Internet. To understand the role of digital-networked images as a site for engaging in a personal and connective “visual” action that leads to formation of transient communities, the author analyzes the nude self-portrait of the young Egyptian woman Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, which during the Egyptian uprisings in 2011 drew attention across social media. As an object of analysis this image is a prime example of the use of digital-networked images in temporally intentional distribution, and as an instance of political enactment unique to this era. This article also explains the concept of participatory narratives as an ongoing process of meaning formation in the digital-networked image, shaped by the fluidity of the multiple and immediate textual narratives, visual derivatives, re-appropriation, and remixes contributed by other interested viewers. The online circulation of digital-networked images in fact culminates in a flow of ever-changing and overarching narratives, broadening the contextual scope around which images are traditionally viewed.

Pada zaman modern ini, teknologi semakin berkembang pesat. Gadget dan internet pun seakan sudah menjadi kekasih bagi generasi millennial. Generasi millennial  saat ini (pada tahun 2017) adalah mereka yang berusia 17-36 tahun; mereka yang kini berperan sebagai mahasiswa, early jobber, dan orangtua muda. Akses media sosial yang mudah menyebabkan mudahnya pula peredaran berita bohong (hoax) di masyarakat. Hoax beragam bentuknya; mulai dari hoax dalam aspek pendidikan, kesehatan hingga politik. Ujaran kebencian yang tersebar di dunia nyata maupun dunia maya mengiringi perkembangan hoax yang berakibat pada pecahnya persatuan masyarakat yang telah dibangun dengan asas gotongroyong. Untuk itu, pengkajian ulang serta penerapan berpikir kritis ala filsafat yang didasarkan pada hadis menjadi salah satu tawaran yang solutif bagi generasi millennial sebagai benteng pertahanan dari godaan-godaan efek dari globalisasi, khususnya dalam mengatasi virus hoax yang telah merajalela. Dengan pengkajian itu, diharapkan generasi millennial dapat mewujudkan perdamaian di dunia ini; khususnya di Indonesia.AbstractIn this modern age, technology is growing rapidly. Gadgets and the internet seemed to have become lovers for the millennial generation. The current millennial generation (in 2017) are those aged 17-36; those who now act as students, early jobber, and young parents. The easy access of social media causes the easy circulation of false news (hoaxes) in the community. Hoax varies in shape; ranging from hoaxes in aspects of education, health to politics. Hate speech that spread in the real world and cyberspace accompanied the development of hoax which resulted in the outbreak of community unity that has been built with the principle of gotongroyong. For that reason, the review and application of philosophical-based philosophical critical thinking is one of the most solemn proposals for the millennial generation as a bastion of the temptations of the effects of globalization, particularly in the prevention of rampant hoaxes. With that assessment, millennials are expected to bring about peace in this world; especially in Indonesia.

In 2017 the majority of internet users are 19-34 years old or 49.52% (APJI, 2017). Almost half of the internet users in Indonesia are digital natives who were born after 1980: Generation Y (1980-1995) and Generation Z (1996-2009). This research will be focused on Generation Z as the true generation of the internet. Generation Z was born when the internet is available, a contrast to Generation Y who is still experiencing the transition of the internet. The purpose of this research is to find an effective way of providing information about media literacy to Generation Z. Through descriptive qualitative, the study was conducted with in-depth interview and observation toward 12 university students in Jakarta. The results showed that there are four effective ways of providing information about media literacy which is i) videos distributed to social media such as Youtube and Instagram, ii) interesting memes in communicative style, iii) through selebgram or micro-celebrity in Instagram who is consider as a role model and have a positive image, and iv) roadside billboards. Another interesting finding is that male informants tend to like media literacy information through videos and memes, while female informants prefer campaigns conducted by positive image selebgram and billboard. AbstrakPada tahun 2017 pengguna internet di Indonesia mayoritas berusia 19-34 tahun yaitu sebanyak 49,52% (APJI, 2017). Dari data tersebut terlihat bahwa hampir sebagian pengguna internet di Indonesia adalah digital natives atau penutur asli teknologi digital yaitu orang-orang yang lahir setelah tahun 1980: Generasi Y (1980-1995) dan Generasi Z (1996-2009). Penelitian ini akan difokuskan kepada Generasi Z karena mereka dianggap sebagai sebenar-benarnya generasi internet. Generasi Z lahir saat teknologi tersebut sudah tersedia, berbeda dengan Generasi Y yang masih mengalami transisi teknologi hingga menuju internet. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mencari tahu cara yang efektif dalam memberikan informasi mengenai media literasi kepada generasi Z. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan observasi dan wawancara mendalam. Informan berjumlah 12 orang mahasiswa di Jakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empat cara yang efektif dalam memberikan informasi mengenai media literasi yaitu i) video yang disebarkan ke media sosial seperti Youtube dan Instagram, ii) meme menarik dengan bahasa yang mudah dimengerti, iii) melalui selebgram yang menjadi panutan dan berimage positif, dan iv) papan iklan di pinggir jalan. Temuan menarik lainnya adalah informan laki-laki cenderung menyukai informasi media literasi melalui video dan meme yang disebarkan ke media sosial, sementara perempuan lebih menyukai kampanye yang dilakukan oleh selebgram berimage positif dan papan iklan.

<p>As bots become more prevalent and smarter in the modern age of the internet, it becomes ever more important that they be identified and removed. Recent research has dictated that machine learning methods are accurate and the gold standard of bot identification on social media. Unfortunately, machine learning models do not come without their negative aspects such as lengthy training times, difficult feature selection, and overwhelming pre-processing tasks. To overcome these difficulties, we are proposing a blockchain framework for bot identification. At the current time, it is unknown how this method will perform, but it serves to prove the existence of an overwhelming gap of research under this area.<i></i></p>

The term “digital public diplomacy” that appeared in the 21st century owes much to the emergence and development of the concept of Web 2.0 (interactive communication on the Internet). The principle of network interaction, in which the system becomes better with an increase in the number of users and the creation of user-generated content, made it possible to create social media platforms where news and entertainment content is created and moderated by the user. Such platforms have become an expression of the opinions of various groups of people in many countries of the world, including China. The Chinese segment of the Internet is “closed”, and many popular Western services are blocked in it. Studying the structure of Chinese social media platforms and microblogging, as well as analyzing targeted content is necessary to understand China’s public opinion, choose the right message channels and receive feedback for promoting the country’s public diplomacy. This paper reveals the main Chinese social media platforms and microblogging and provides the assessment of their popularity, as well as possibility of analyzing China’s public opinion based on “listening” to social media platforms and microblogging.

The first chapter introduces the concept of the digital street. The author argues that a digital form of street life plays out alongside the neighborhood on social media. The author discusses how the traditional boundaries of street life and the street code in particular have shifted as neighborhood space extends online. Black and Latino teenagers now experience their neighborhood differently from previous generations. The author explains the fieldwork this book is based upon. The author describes meeting “Pastor” and becoming an outreach worker in his peace ministry and then taking on additional roles online and offline with teenagers and concerned adults. This introductory chapter also gives background on access to smartphones and the Internet. A brief description of the contents of each chapter and the order of the chapters is provided.
