Personalized courseware authoring based on recommender system, which is the process of automatic learning objects selecting and sequencing, is recognized as one of the most interesting research field in intelligent web-based education. Since the learner’s profile of each learner is different from one to another, we must fit learning to the different needs of learners. In fact from the knowledge of the learner’s profile, it is easier to recommend a suitable set of learning objects to enhance the learning process. In this paper we describe a new adaptive learning system-LearnFitII, which can automatically adapt to the dynamic preferences of learners. This system recognizes different patterns of learning style and learners’ habits through testing the psychological model of learners and mining their server logs. Firstly, the device proposed a personalized learning scenario to deal with the cold start problem by using the Felder and Silverman’s model. Next, it analyzes the habits and the preferences of the learners through mining the information about learners’ actions and interactions. Finally, the learning scenario is revisited and updated using hybrid recommender system based on K-Nearest Neighbors and association rule mining algorithms. The results of the system tested in real environments show that considering the learner’s preferences increases learning quality and satisfies the learner.

With the development and adoption of information technologies in education, learners become active producer of knowledge. There is an increasing amount of content generated by learners in their learning process. These emerging learning objects (ELOs) could potentially be valuable as learning resources as well as for assessment purpose. However, the potentials also give rise to new challenges for indexing, sharing, retrieval and recommendation of such learning objects. In this research we have developed a recommender system for emerging learning objects generated in a collaborative knowledge building process and studied the implications and added values of the recommendations. We conducted two evaluations with learners to assess and improve the system?s design and study the quality and effects of the recommendations. From the evaluations, we received generally positive feedback and the results confirm the added values of the recommendations for the knowledge building process.

Poder ubuesco. Pós-estruturalista. NOTES ABOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF EXPERIENCE: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND UBUESCO POWER Abstract: Experience is understood as what passes us, happens to us, and touches us. In view of this, this experience report takes the sense of a report of a study that touched us, happened to us and left traces in us. Therefore, the following narrative refers to an experience report about a master’s degree study embedded to the Research line of the Postgraduate studies Program in Education in Sciences: Chemistry of Life and Health – UFRGS, that investigates how the effects of the speeches and social practices processed in different instances act in the production of truths and subjects, having as base the poststructuralist perspective. The study had as objective to examine notions pertinent to the Michel Foucault’s philosophy that worked as analytical tools to give new looks about Environmental Education. The purpose of this text is to present how happened the meeting between the referred education and the notion of ubuesque power, mentioned by the author only in the two first classes that integrate the work Abnormal (1974-1975). On account of this meeting, having as base the Cartography method, in which it was sought to present the maps of senses that the ubuesque category reached, it was obtained as result the elaboration and submission of a paper in which the notion of ubuesque power was operated with the context of the present environmental crisis. This report will approach the experience traveled until the writing of the submitted paper, presenting the main steps of the accomplished course. Keywords: Environmental Education. Experience. Ubuesque Power. Poststructuralist.

This experience report describes one student’s perspective about being a part of the first CAPES/FIPSE exchange session that brought her to study at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil from Utah State University (USU) in the United States. In June and July 2010, this student joined two other university students to present the CAPES/FIPSE project and the related math learning objects at four schools in Campinas. This article provides an overview of the project and offers this student’s thoughts about possible reasons for the instructors’ immediate responses and future plans with the digital learning objects.

Mobile learning is about increasing learners' capability to carry their own learning environment along with them. Recommender Systems are widely used nowadays, especially in e-commerce sites and mobile devices, for example, Amazon.com and Submarino.com. In this chapter, the authors propose the use of such systems in the area of education, specifically for the recommendation of learning objects in mobile devices. The advantage of using Recommender Systems in mobile devices is that it is an easy way to deliver recommendations to students. Based on this scenario, this chapter presents a model of a recommender system based on information filtering for mobile environments. The proposed model was implemented in a prototype aimed to recommend learning objects in mobile devices. The evaluation of the received recommendations was conducted using a Likert scale of 5 points. At the end of this chapter, some future works are described.

This paper focuses on monitoring and analyzing user activities on collaborative filtering -based recommender system in order to guess suitable and unsuitable items' context information using rating matrix which makes more efficient adaptation task. An ontology-based user profile and rules-based context modeling for reasoning about context information is proposed in this research work, in addition to an investigation to apply Semantic Web technologies in user modeling and context reasoning. This proposal is applied in education field in which we have designed an authoring tool for learning objects within ubiquitous environment. This system aims to improve the learning object production task (creation, review, edition…) on behalf of technologies offered by collaborative filtering systems as well as user behaviors monitoring to improve the recommendation process.
