The purpose of this case study research is to study the strategic role that information technology (IT) plays in two subsidiaries - located in Egypt and Sweden - of a multinational company with a federal organizational structure. Using a well-established evaluation framework and a widely accepted model, we examine two important aspects of the strategic role of IT: i) how IT supports business and organizational strategy; and ii) the maturity of business and IT strategy alignment. The case study discusses the importance of having a balanced relationship among business strategy, information strategy, organizational strategy, and the way in which business and IT managers should act to improve business-IT alignment, also referred to as strategic alignment. Based on the results of the comparative analysis of the two companies, the research presents concrete recommendations that IT decision-makers from the two subsidiaries of the multinational company should consider to improve IT performance.

Despite the importance and the strategic role of Business Intelligence (BI) in organizations and its key impact on successfully executing corporate strategies, in most cases, strategic planning and performance management projects are done independently from BI projects, therefore a holistic and an integrated framework has been proposed in this paper for aligning Business Intelligence initiatives with corporate strategies. This framework as an interdisciplinary work borrows the approach of the Enterprise Architecture frameworks and its structured logical thinking about the organization and was refined through gathering and analyzing expert's opinions. This paper also uses a case study in one bank with the aim of clarifying the application of the proposed framework.

This chapter discusses the strategic role of an enterprise resource planning system within the International Centre of an Australian University. Several problems with use of the system are identified in the case study. These problems with use quality are a likely cause for the mismatch between what was expected of the system in supporting business strategies and the actual outcome. The users demonstrate an awareness of organisational strategies and goals and consider that the newly-implemented system does not sufficiently support execution of strategy and achievement of strategic goals, or formulation of organisational strategy.

In a world where innovation assumes the strategic role of organizations and countries, the training of people, particularly engineers, is fundamental for debates that present its advantages and disadvantages. The present study will examine what happens to Production Engineering students at the Federal University Fluminense who are newly graduated and/or are about to graduate in relation to the alignment between the expectations of their probable employers and their own perceptions of the acquired knowledge and skills during the course. The research strategy used was the case study, on the one hand we collected data from three companies of different sectors through focal groups which involved the managers responsible for recruitment and selection and, on the other hand, through a survey applied to students under the circumstances of the examination. Governments are increasingly facing conflicting land uses in cities. Many governments strongly aspire to provide green spaces for the public, yet simultaneously stimulate private preferences for real-estate development. This paper argues that examining the interrelationship between land ownership and control over land clarifies the provision of green spaces in the context of private preferences for development. It presents a case study of the Carré de Soie urban development in which the government aspires to an abundance of green but concurrently encourages the market to take the initiative. The findings show that the lack of public land ownership combined with private actors having a say in control over land fell short in satisfying public aspirations for green spaces. This paper concludes that if cities need to become greener, recognising the role of the government to act in the public interest is of utmost importance.
