Classification of Emotional States in a Woz Scenario Exploiting Labeled and Unlabeled Bio-physiological Data

AbstractDuring the last decades, neurofeedback training for emotional self-regulation has received significant attention from both the scientific and clinical communities. However, most studies have focused on broader emotional states such as “negative vs. positive”, primarily due to our poor understanding of the functional anatomy of more complex emotions at the electrophysiological level. Our proof-of-concept study aims at investigating the feasibility of classifying two complex emotions that have been implicated in mental health, namely tenderness and anguish, using features extracted from the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal in healthy participants. Electrophysiological data were recorded from fourteen participants during a block-designed experiment consisting of emotional self-induction trials combined with a multimodal virtual scenario. For the within-subject classification, the linear Support Vector Machine was trained with two sets of samples: random cross-validation of the sliding windows of all trials; and 2) strategic cross-validation, assigning all the windows of one trial to the same fold. Spectral features, together with the frontal-alpha asymmetry, were extracted using Complex Morlet Wavelet analysis. Classification results with these features showed an accuracy of 79.3% on average when doing random cross-validation, and 73.3% when applying strategic cross-validation. We extracted a second set of features from the amplitude time-series correlation analysis, which significantly enhanced random cross-validation accuracy while showing similar performance to spectral features when doing strategic cross-validation. These results suggest that complex emotions show distinct electrophysiological correlates, which paves the way for future EEG-based, real-time neurofeedback training of complex emotional states.Significance statementThere is still little understanding about the correlates of high-order emotions (i.e., anguish and tenderness) in the physiological signals recorded with the EEG. Most studies have investigated emotions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), including the real-time application in neurofeedback training. However, concerning the therapeutic application, EEG is a more suitable tool with regards to costs and practicability. Therefore, our proof-of-concept study aims at establishing a method for classifying complex emotions that can be later used for EEG-based neurofeedback on emotion regulation. We recorded EEG signals during a multimodal, near-immersive emotion-elicitation experiment. Results demonstrate that intraindividual classification of discrete emotions with features extracted from the EEG is feasible and may be implemented in real-time to enable neurofeedback.

Nevertheless, even the most successful methods are still rather lacking in terms of adaptation to specific speakers and scenarios, evidently reducing their performance when compared to humans. In this paper, we evaluate a largescale machine learning model for classification of emotional states. This model has been trained for speaker iden- tification but is instead used here as a front-end for extracting robust features from emotional speech. We aim to verify that SER improves when some speak- er</span><span>’</span><span>s emotional prosody cues are considered. Experiments using various state-of- the-art classifiers are carried out, using the Weka software, so as to evaluate the robustness of the extracted features. Considerable improvement is observed when comparing our results with other SER state-of-the-art techniques.</span></p></div></div></div>

Although much effort has gone into the description and classification of schizophrenic behaviour patterns, little attempt has been made to detail the course of the disorder. The present paper is an effort to trace the effects of chronicity on perception by use of a cross-sectional method. The specific tasks were selected to maximize autochthonous factors in perception. At the same time a demonstrable sensitivity to emotional states was desired, since changes in the schizophrenic condition are often considered reflections of reaction to stress. A wide enough area of behaviour was encompassed so that a general pattern, if one emerged, could be considered typical of perception as a whole.

A Gram-type-positive, strictly aerobic actinobacterium, designated strain MON 2.2T, was isolated from the surface of a sandstone monument. Cells with a coccoid shape, arranged in pairs or clusters, were non-motile and did not produce spores. The 10 closest 16S rRNA gene sequence matches (~95 % similarity) found in the public databases were uncultured actinobacteria, while the closest cultured members indicated a phylogenetic relationship with members of the family Propionibacteriaceae (92–95 % similarity). Subsequent phylogenetic analysis placed the new isolate within the radiation of the genera Friedmanniella and Microlunatus, but forming an independent branch. Chemotaxonomic markers were consistent with the classification of strain MON 2.2T in the family Propionibacteriaceae, amongst the genera containing ll-diaminopimelic acid in their peptidoglycan. Characteristic fatty acids iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 also supported its affiliation to this taxon; however, polar lipid and menaquinone compositions clearly differentiated strain MON 2.2T from other genera in the family. On the basis of these results and additional physiological data obtained in the present study, it is proposed that strain MON 2.2T be classified in a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Auraticoccus monumenti gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Auraticoccus monumenti is MON 2.2T ( = CECT 7672T  = DSM 23257T  = LMG 25551T).

The paper discusses a multivariate classification of the concept of “heat of passion” as it is used in forensic psychology, as well as emotional reactions and emotional states. It explores the criteria for differential diagnosis of “heat of passion” and emotional states that have a significant effect on the defendant's consciousness and behavior at the time of committing a crime. An algorithm of forensic psychological evaluation of the defendant's emotional states is proposed, together with examples of sample wording of expert conclusions, and their legal meaning.

Purpose. The task of this article is to study the use of gemination that is the stylistic device of repetition. It is used to depict the emotional states of the characters in the novel “451 degrees Fahrenheit” by the American writer Ray Bradbury. Until now this topic has not been examined thoroughly in scientific studies. It seems interesting to mark gemination as positive and negative one by means of the context that helps to acquire a certain expressive and evaluative judgment.Methods. The research is carried out using a descriptive method for cataloguing, systematization, and classification of factual material, as well as methods of theoretical generalization and analysis. The method of contextual analysis is used to clarify the role of expressive means in the text of the novel. This method is aimed at revealing the context, taking into account the author’s intention, and commented on the means of expression used by the writer. The application of these methods allows analyzing the use of the stylistic figure gemination as an expression of the characters’ different emotional states.Results. The article considers the theoretical aspects of repetition and stylistic devices which are based on its principle. In the novel, repetition functions as one of the principles to verbalize the expression of the characters’ emotional states. The views of linguists on the peculiarities of gemination’s functioning in the language are analyzed. The attempt to give the definition to this stylistic device is made. In linguistics, gemination is characterized as a phenomenon of the expressive syntax that has a contact location. The achievement of the influential effect is due to redundancy. Conclusions. The analyzed examples which are based on gemination mostly describe negative emotions. The number of examples in the novel where gemination is used to denote positive emotions is rather small. It is emphasized that such a distribution is not usual as it depends on the genre, the text’s general tone, and the context of the analyzed stylistic device.Key words: repetition, stylistic devices, expressive syntax, fiction, function, emotion. Мета наукової розвідки полягає в дослідженні вживання стилістичної фігури повтору гемінації, яку використано для зображення емоційного стану персонажів у романі американського письменника РеяБредбері «451 градус за Фаренгейтом», що до сьогодні не ставало предметом ретельних наукових студіювань. Цікавим видається позитивне та негативне маркування стилістичної фігури, яка залежно від контексту набуває певного експресивно-оціночного судження.Методи. Дослідження здійснено за допомогою описового методу – для інвентаризації, систематизації і класифікації фактологічного матеріалу, а також методів теоретичного узагальнення та аналізу. Для з’ясування ролі експресивного засобу в тек-сті роману було використано метод контекстуального аналізу, який спрямовано на розкриття контексту з урахуванням задуму автора та було прокоментовано виражальні засоби, якими послуговувався письменник. Використання зазначених методів дозволило здійснити аналіз уживання стилістичної фігури гемінація як виразника різних емоційних станів персонажів твору.Результати. У статті розглянуто теоретичні аспекти фігури мови повтору та стилістичних фігур, які засновані на його принципі. У тексті роману повтор функціонує як один із принципів вербалізації вираження емоційних станів персонажів. Детально проаналізовано ті з них, які використано як інструмент досягнення експресивності. Розглянуто точки зору вчених-лінгвістів на особливості функціонування гемінації в мові та зроблено спробу надати дефініцію зазначеному явищу. У науко-вих лінгвістичних розвідках гемінація характеризується як фігура експресивного синтаксису. Зазначене явище має контактне розташування, а досягнення впливового ефекту відбувається за рахунок надлишковості. Вживання гемінації у тексті привер-тає увагу читачів, акцентує увагу на найголовнішому, допомагає відобразити настрій та емоції героїв твору.Висновки. У статті звернено увагу на вживання стилістичних фігур, які засновано на принципі повтору і є семантико-стилістичною домінантою у творі письменника. Досліджувані приклади, які засновані на вживанні фігури мови гемінації, в основному описують негативні емоції. Кількість прикладів у романі, де гемінація вживається на позначення позитивних емоцій, складає незначну кількість. Наголошено, що такий розподіл не є закономірним, а залежить від жанру, загального тону твору та контексту аналізованої фігури. Ключові слова: повтор, стилістичні засоби, експресивний синтаксис, художній текст, функція, емоція.
