One of ways to improve properties of materials without changing the product shape toobtain the desired engineering applications is heating and cooling under effect of controlledsequence of heat treatment. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect ofheating and cooling on the surface roughness, microstructure and some selected propertiessuch as the hardness and impact strength of Medium Carbon Steel which treated at differenttypes of heat treatment processes. Heat treatment achieved in this work was respectively,heating, quenching and tempering. The specimens were heated to 850°C and left for 45minutes inside the furnace as a holding time at that temperature, then quenching process wasperformed in four types of quenching media (still air, cold water (2°C), oil and polymersolution), respectively. Thereafter, the samples were tempered at 200°C, 400°C, and 600°Cwith one hour as a soaking time for each temperature, then were all cooled by still air. Whenthe heat treatment process was completed, the surface roughness, hardness, impact strengthand microstructure tests were performed. The results showed a change and clearimprovement of surface roughness, mechanical properties and microstructure afterquenching was achieved, as well as the change that took place due to the increasingtoughness and ductility by reducing of brittleness of samples.

This study is conducted to analyze the effect on the Hardness and Micro Structural Behaviour of three Sample Grades of Tool Steel i.e. EN-31, EN-8, and D3 after Heat Treatment Processes Such As Annealing, Normalizing, and Hardening and Tempering. The purpose of Selecting Tool Steel is Because Tool Steel is Mostly Used in the Manufacturing Industry.This study is based upon the empirical study which means it is derived from experiment and observation rather than theory.

The transverse properties were inferior to the longitudinal properties for the existence of banded structure in 20G steel. In order to eliminate the banded structure and improve the transverse performance of 20G steel, different heat treatment processes were adopted. The results showed that conventional normalizing could reduce the banded structure and refine the grain sizes. When 20G was heated with 10°C/min heating rated and then held at 920°C for 2h, the banded structure in the steel was almost eliminated and the microstructure was homogeneous with fine grain size, the strength increased by 14%. The non-metallic inclusion and carbide in the microstructure leaded to stress concentration and separation with the base metal. To some extent, heat treatment can improve the distribution and form of non-metallic inclusions.

In order to improve the sinterability of the cBN, surface oxidation treatment was conducted to form a B2O3 film on the surface of the cBN powders. The cBN powders (d50 = 7.5 μm) were used as original powders. The heat treatment processes were 500, 800, 900, 950, 980 and 1000 °C holding for 30 minutes, respectively. The oxidation reactions which probably happened were calculated based on the thermodynamics. The experimental results showed that the oxidation starting temperature of cBN powders was higher than 800 °C. The higher the oxidation temperature, the greater the mass gain of the cBN powders.

The paper presents problems experienced during repairs of structures operated at high temperature for a long time. Research-related TOFD method-based ultrasonic tests revealed indications implying the presence of unacceptable imperfections in welded joints. Attempted repairs involving the use of welding methods proved ineffective as the welding and heat treatment processes resulted in the formation of cracks. The tests and analysis of the above-named issue revealed that the reason for repair-related problems lay in relaxation cracks triggered by excessively high stresses in the joints and improper parameters of heat treatment to which the steel of the boiler was subjected. The welding technology developed as a result of the study enabled the performance of the proper repair of related equipment and made it possible to re-start the production.
