The paper summarises the findings concerning the dynamics of intercultural communication difficulties in FL students. The author studies the concept of the communicative competence in the intercultural context, its key components and determining factors as well as describes typical communicative difficulties that hinder intercultural interaction. The study identified the frequency of the said communication difficulties in students’ communication in a foreign language at different stages of their university course.

Inferring conversational implicatures could be difficult for foreign language learners. Some studies show that English proficiency of Indonesian English students, teachers and lecturers are low. Unfortunately, none of the studies dealt with factors which determine the learners’ failures to interpret each type of implicature questions on the basis of gender. The present study aimed at exploring types of implicature question of aural short conversations in Pre-TOEFL failed to be answered correctly and their causes experienced by a) males b) females students of EEPUM. Data were collected through  Part A Pre-TOEFL test, Inventory of Determining Factors of Failure, Interview Protocol, Recording  and Note-taking and analysed with  a cyclical qualitative analysis on the basis of  Brown & Yules’s theory,  Anderson’s model and Goh’s five factors affecting listening. Types of implicature questions failed to be answered correctly and their determining factors are shown. Key words: Inferring, Implicature, Proficiency, Gender, Failure.

This article presents an empirical inquiry on the drivers that have influenced the speed and the degree of SME internationalisation in Bangalore. The article is based on primary data gathered from 70 internationalised small and medium enterprises (SMEs) belonging to the machinery industry in Bangalore urban district. Our analysis ascertained that the size of the firm and CEOs’ foreign language proficiency are the significant determinants of the speed of SME internationalisation. CEOs’ international experience, motivation, international network and speed of entry positively influenced the degree of SME internationalisation. Thus, the present study lays emphasis on ‘entrepreneurial competence’ and ‘strategic entry’ that determine the speed and degree of internationalisation of SMEs, for appropriate policy attention for promoting SME internationalisation.

Lexical semantic changes were pinpointed on three distinct generations of Kuningan Region so as to find out their tapestry and figure out their prevalent influential factors. They were both analyzed and identified by the employment of the qualitative descriptive method with questionnaires and interview as data collection techniques. It was shown that referring to 141 appearances, broadening and narrowing meaning took up respectively 24.82% and 7.09%. Meanwhile, both Ameliorization and Pejorization made up 29.07%, while Taboo comprised 9.92%. Subsequently, it was notified that all factors were of prevalence, namely linguistic,historical,psychological,social causes, foreign language influences, and novel word needs. It is concluded that typical types of lexical semantic changes as well as their determining factors are prevalently identified. It is imperative that corpus study be implemented and timelines related- lexical semantic changes be touched upon for the further research.

From the point of view of linguists interested in pidginization, creolization, or other language contact phenomena, the continued presence of large numbers of southern European and North African foreign workers (called Gastaibeitei in Germany) and their families in northern European countries presents almost laboratory conditions for the investigation of the initial and subsequent stages of foreign language acquisition and development. Of particular interest is the fact that many of the languages involved here (Turkish, Arabic, Greek, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) are typologically and genetically distinct; thus the situation is ideal for the study of common features of language development. If a Creole were to develop here, it would provide extremely valuable evidence for or against proposed universals.

Abstract Providing adequate speech therapy services to Latinos who stutter can present challenges that are not obvious to the practicing clinician. This article addresses cultural, religious, and foreign language concerns to the therapeutic relationship between the Latino client and the clinician. Suggestions are made for building cross-cultural connections with clients and incorporating the family into a collaborative partnership with the service provider.

Abstract. Eye movements of children (Grade 5-6) and adults were monitored while they were watching a foreign language movie with either standard (foreign language soundtrack and native language subtitling) or reversed (foreign language subtitles and native language soundtrack) subtitling. With standard subtitling, reading behavior in the subtitle was observed, but there was a difference between one- and two-line subtitles. As two lines of text contain verbal information that cannot easily be inferred from the pictures on the screen, more regular reading occurred; a single text line is often redundant to the information in the picture, and accordingly less reading of one-line text was apparent. Reversed subtitling showed even more irregular reading patterns (e.g., more subtitles skipped, fewer fixations, longer latencies). No substantial age differences emerged, except that children took longer to shift attention to the subtitle at its onset, and showed longer fixations and shorter saccades in the text. On the whole, the results demonstrated the flexibility of the attentional system and its tuning to the several information sources available (image, soundtrack, and subtitles).

Nearly all Canadian universities employ, as a standard for university admission, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In light of considerable evidence indicating only a weak relationship between TOEFL scores and academic achievement, the Canadian Psychological Association recently issued a report containing a position statement that called upon Canadian universities to refrain from employing the TOEFL in this manner. Because the concerns raised in the report are likely to apply to many universities outside Canada, the entire report is reproduced in this article.
