The study deals with determination of the vertical load on the carrying structure of a flat wagon on the 18–100 and Y25 bogies using mathematic modelling. The study was made for an empty wagon passing over a joint irregularity. The authors calculated the carrying structure of a flat wagon with the designed parameters and the actual features recorded during field tests. The mathematical model was solved in MathCad software. The study found that application of the Y25 bogie for a flat wagon with the designed parameters can decrease the dynamic load by 41.1% in comparison to that with the 18–100 bogie. Therefore, application of the Y25 bogie under a flat wagon with the actual parameters allows decreasing the dynamic loading by 41.4% in comparison to that with the 18–100 bogie. The study also looks at the service life of the supporting structure of a flat wagon with the Y25 bogie, which can be more than twice as long as the 18–100 bogie. The research can be of interest for specialists concerned with improvements in the dynamic characteristics and the fatigue strength of freight cars, safe rail operation, freight security, and the results of the research can be used for development of innovative wagon structures.

The paper presents an aproximate analytic method for determination of the stored energy of plastic deformation during cold bending of metal tubes at bending machines. Calculations were performed for outer points of the tube layers subjected to tension and compression (the points of maximum strains). The percentage of stored energy related to the plastic strain work was determined and the results were presented in graphs. The influence and importance of the stored energy of plastic deformation on the service life of pipeline bends are discussed.

The method of predictive calculations of the state of the rails as the main element of assessing the state of the track when planning major repairs of the track is given. With a standard service life of 600 to 700 million tons gross, it is necessary to predict the number of defective rails on the track when increasing the service life to 1100 million tons gross (considering local rail replacement during intermediate repairs). The polygon for assigning repairs is determined by the number of “Windows” that can be provided per week on the section. The projected increase in the work of the track causes the need to increase life cycle cost depreciation charges for the formation of the repair Fund for capital repairs by 30-35%.

In this study, experimental and numerical analyses were carried out for determination of cohesion values of different types of rock materials using double shear jaws (DSJ) which can be practically used with the conventional compressive test equipment, to make shear planes in the rock core specimens. Effects of various parameters like jaw dimensions, gaps between triple blocks of the DSJ and contact conditions of the jaw on the results and validity of the cohesion test were investigated considering failure mechanisms of rock core specimens. Instead of a failure induced due to the shear stresses, tensile failures are mostly seen from conventional shear testing conditions. For a valid failure under the control of shear stresses, a DSJ design was suggested to be used in cohesion determination tests according to the results obtained from this study.

For accurate determination of the service life we must take into account the loading, which are in most cases random loading of variable amplitude, the geometry and material properties of construction elements which are known not to be constants. The more precise these input parameters are modeled; the more precise and reliable are the results. In our paper we will deal in detail with the model of crack initiation and propagation in the complex structures as a basis of the algorithm for calculating the service life. For determination of the service life for the area of short cracks we used Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden model which is based on the theory of continuously distributed dislocations and we complemented it with random generation of structure of material before cracks. For the long crack we have developed a stochastic model for determination of service life.

The article presents methods for determining loads on rollers of a six-roll support of a tubular belt conveyor, based on the equilibrium laws of elastic cylindrical plates and shells filled with a freight. In this case, the forces acting on the rollers of the tubular conveyor are the sum of the forces caused by the weight and expansion of the bulk load, the weight and bend of the belt, as well as the inertial forces associated with the curvature and the deflection of the belt under the weight of the bulk load. The dynamic forces acting on the rollers as the belt moves are determined from the equation of the oscillations of a heavy flexible string using the Ritz method. As a result of the research, analytical dependences of the forces acting on the rollers of the six-roller support of the tubular conveyor on the parameters of the conveyor, the belt, the properties of the bulk load and the radius of curvature of the conveyor are obtained, and an assessment of the component these forces is given. The results can be used to determine the parameters of the tubular conveyors rollers and increase the service life of the rollers.
