Estuaries are often modified by human activities. Adjustments in the morphology of an estuary have a potential impact on the hydrodynamics and on the reflection behavior of the tide. The influence of such system changes on the complex tidal regime with a large number of superimposed tidal constituents is not fully understood yet. The reflection properties of estuaries that are characterized by abrupt changes in geometry are systematically investigated on the basis of simplified estuary model approaches to improve the understanding of the oscillation and reflection behavior of tidal waves in estuaries. The reflection coefficients at abrupt cross-sectional changes are determined by two different methods, i.e., an analytical energy-based approach and a hydrodynamic numerical (HN) model. Comparisons indicate a high agreement of the results of the different methods when evaluating the reflection coefficient. The tidal constituents are reflected at partial and total reflectors and amplified by shoaling depending on the water depths, the height of the bottom step and the horizontal constriction. A harmonic analysis of simulated water level data partly shows the formation and amplification of higher harmonic components as a result of shallow water effects. The interaction with reflectors results in an increasing amplification of the tidal constituents and the tide.

Ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change impacts, such as shoreline retreat, has been promoted at the international, national, and even local levels. However, among scientists, opinions about how to implement it in spatial-planning practices are varied. Science-based environmental factors, human wellbeing, and sustainable development can be strengthened by developing spatial-planning-based ecosystem adaptations (SPBEAs). Therefore, this article aims to assess how the SPBEA model can be developed within an area prone to shoreline retreat. A coastal area of the Sayung subdistrict in Central Java, Indonesia, was selected as a study area because it has experienced a massive shoreline retreat. A multicriteria analysis (MCA) method was employed for developing the model by using the geographic information system (GIS) technique of analysis, divided into three steps: the fishpond zone determination, which involved the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method in the process of model development; the fishpond site determination; SPBEA fishpond site development. The results show that the SPBEA model is the best practice solution for combatting shoreline retreat because of tidal waves and/or sea-level rise. The spatial site management should empower the coastal protection zone and the sustainable fishpond zone by implementing a silvofishery approach.

The reconstruction of periodic signals that are embedded in noise is a very important task in many applications. This already difficult task is even more complex when some observations are missed or some are presented irregularly in time. Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filtration, a well-developed method, offers a solution to this problem. One section of this paper provides examples of very precise reconstructions of multiple periodic signals covered with high level noise, noise levels that make those signals invisible within the original data. The ability to reconstruct signals from noisy data is applied to the numerical reconstruction of tidal waves in atmospheric pressure. The existence of such waves was proved by well-known naturalist Chapman, but due to the high synoptic fluctuation in atmospheric pressure he was unable to numerically reproduce the waves. Reconstruction of the atmospheric tidal waves reveals a potential intensification on wind speed during hurricanes, which could increase the danger imposed by hurricanes. Due to the periodic structure of the atmospheric tidal wave, it is predictable in time and space, which is important information for the prediction of excess force in developing hurricanes.

AbstractTidal dissipation in stars is one of the key physical mechanisms that drive the evolution of binary and multiple stars. As in the Earth oceans, it corresponds to the resonant excitation of their eigenmodes of oscillation and their damping. Therefore, it strongly depends on the internal structure, rotation, and dissipative mechanisms in each component. In this work, we present a local analytical modeling of tidal gravito-inertial waves excited in stellar convective and radiative regions respectively. This model allows us to understand in details the properties of the resonant tidal dissipation as a function of the excitation frequencies, the rotation, the stratification, and the viscous and thermal properties of the studied fluid regions. Then, the frequencies, height, width at half-height, and number of resonances as well as the non-resonant equilibrium tide are derived analytically in asymptotic regimes that are relevant in stellar interiors. Finally, we demonstrate how viscous dissipation of tidal waves leads to a strongly erratic orbital evolution in the case of a coplanar binary system. We characterize such a non-regular dynamics as a function of the height and width of resonances, which have been previously characterized thanks to our local fluid model.

ABSTRACTSerang Regency in Banten Province is a multi-prone area of natural disaster, with the greatest potential disasters particularly like floods, landslides, earthquakes, tidal waves, tsunamis, and abrasion. At the time of the Banten tsunami at December 2018, Bulakan Village, Cinangka Subdistrict, Serang Regency was a tsunami affected area that was classified as quite severe. Natural disasters are real threats with non-military threats.The role of relevant ministries/government institutions as the main element in non-military defense also needs attention. The aim of this study is to find the root of the problems and also the solutions related to non-military defense in confronting the real threat in the form of a tsunami disaster that struck the Serang Regency. This research is using a qualitative method supported by the case-study method. All the information obtained from the defined informants was analyzed by qualitative analysis technique. This research also aims to analyze the implementation of coastal area empowerment strategies and institutional synergy mechanism implemented at Bulakan Vilage, Cinangka Subdistrict,  Serang Regency, Banten Province.The results showed that the empowerment of coastal areas in the form of institutional synergy in Serang District was carried out with a tsunami disaster management plan based on empowerment of coastal areas such as the development of coastal community disaster awareness, and compiling sustainable  plans for a tsunami disaster. Some factors that influence the implementation of the coastal areas empowering strategy in Serang Regency in facing the tsunami disaster are community supports and good communication among the stakeholders.ABSTRAK           Kabupaten Serang di Provinsi Banten merupakan wilayah multirawan bencana, dengan potensi bencana  terbesar yang meliputi banjir, tanah longsor, gempa, gelombang pasang, tsunami, dan abrasi. Pada saat tsunami yang menerjang Selat Sunda pada Desember 2018 lalu, Desa Bulakan, Kecamatan Cinangka, Kabupaten Serang merupakan daerah terdampak tsunami yang tergolong cukup parah. Bencana alam merupakan ancaman nyata berdimensi ancaman nir-militer. Peran kementerian/ lembaga pemerintah terkait sebagai unsur utama dalam pertahanan nir-militer juga perlu mendapat perhatian, sehingga ditemukan akar permasalahan dan solusi terkait pertahanan nir-militer dalam menghadapi anacaman nyata berupa bencana tsunami yang melanda wilayah Kabupaten Serang. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif yang didukung oleh metode penelitian studi kasus. Informasi yang didapatkan dari para narasumber yang dituju selanjutnya dibahas dengan menerapkan teknik analisis kualitatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis implementasi strategi pemberdayaan wilayah pesisir dan mekanisme sinergitas kelembagaan yang dilaksanakan di wilayah Desa Bulakan, Kecamatan Cinangka, Kabupaten Serang, Provinsi Banten. Hasil dari kajian ini memperlihatkan bahwa pemberdayaan wilayah pesisir di Desa Bulakan  dalam bentuk sinergitas kelembagaan di Kabupaten Serang dilakukan dengan rencana aksi penanggulangan bencana tsunami berbasis pemberdayaan wilayah pesisir yang meliputi pembinaan kesadaran bencana masyarakat pesisir, dan menyusun rencana simulasi bencana tsunami berkelanjutan. Faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi terselenggaranya strategi pemberdayaan wilayah pesisir di wilayah Serang dalam menghadapi bencana tsunami adalah dukungan masyarakat dan komunikasi yang baik antara para pemangku kepentingan

As an exercise in trans-oceanic history, this article focuses on the Dutch IndianOcean World in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from the Dutch EastIndia Company or VOC’s permanent colony at Cape Town, South Africa, inthe Far West to its seasonal trading factory at Canton (Guangzhou), in the FarEast. It argues that the ‘seismic change’ after 1760 noted by Michael Pearsonand associated with the British move inland from their Bengal ‘bridgehead’should be extended to the contemporary polycentric Dutch expansion intothe interior of, most notably, South Africa, Ceylon, Java, and Eastern Indonesia.Demographic measuring points include the number of Dutch citizens andsubjects, comprising European settlers, mixed peoples, and indigenous populations; and: the size and composition of the population of central nodal places in the Dutch Indian Ocean thalassocratic network in the late seventeenth and late eighteenth centuries. By the end of the period, both ‘John Company’(EIC) and ‘Jan Kompenie’ (VOC) effectively were, to some extent, reversingthe colonial gaze inland turning from maritime merchants into landlords andtax collectors. These seismic changes with multiple epicenters were the harbinger of tidal waves about to sweep both the littoral and interior of the modern Indian Ocean World.

The free core nutation (FCN) is one of the Earth’s rotational eigenmodes, which is caused by the retrograde motion of the liquid core relative to the mantle. The FCN period and Q-factor are determined by the elastic properties of the core/mantle boundary (CMB) and their electromagnetic interaction. In the celestial coordinate system, the FCN period is about 430 days; in the Earth-fixed reference frame this effect manifests itself in the form of the free core resonance (FCR) whose frequency falls in the diurnal tidal band. FCR observation requires highly accurate measurement of the amplitudes and phases of the near-diurnal tidal waves. In particular, the parameter estimates for minor waves K1, P1, Ψ1, and Φ1 are critically important for evaluating the FCR effect, i.e., the period and decay of this resonant mode. The progress in the experimental study of FCR is mainly due to the accumulation of the data from superconducting gravimeters and VLBI; at the same time, also the data of the precision laser strainmeters were used. In this work, the FCR effect is studied based on the long-term strain precision records by two European stations: Baksan, Russia (laser interferometer–strainmeter with a measuring armlength of 75 m [Milyukov et al., 2005; 2007] and Gran Sasso, Italy (two perpendicular laser interferometer–strainmeters, BA and BC, each with a measuring armlength of 90 m [Amoruso and Crescentini, 2009]).
