AbstractPhotosystem II (PSII) contains Ca2+, which is essential to the oxygen-evolving activity of the catalytic Mn4CaO5 complex. Replacement of Ca2+ with other redox-inactive metals results in a loss/decrease of oxygen-evolving activity. To investigate the role of Ca2+ in this catalytic reaction, we investigate artificial Mn3[M]O2 clusters redox-inactive metals  [M] ([M]  = Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Sr2+, and Y3+), which were synthesized by Tsui et al. (Nat Chem 5:293, 2013). The experimentally measured redox potentials (Em) of these clusters are best described by the energy of their highest occupied molecular orbitals. Quantum chemical calculations showed that the valence of metals predominantly affects Em(MnIII/IV), whereas the ionic radius of metals affects Em(MnIII/IV) only slightly.

To study the role of self-esteem and gender in anger expression, participants, who were screened for high or low self-esteem, were angered by a confederate. Participants were then given the opportunity to express their anger by administering blasts of white noise to a confederate. Men with low self-esteem exhibited anger-out anger reactions by administering the loudest blasts of white noise, while women with low self-esteem exhibited anger-in anger responses by administering the softest blasts of white noise. High self-esteem men and women did not differ in their anger responses. These findings support the hypothesis that low self-esteem men and women rely upon socialized sex-role stereotypes when responding to anger. The implications of the findings are discussed in terms of their impact on therapy for maladaptive anger responses.

We investigate the total optical dielectric function (TODF) of impurity doped quantum dot (QD) in presence and absence of noise. Noise invoked is Gaussian white noise and the QD is doped with Gaussian impurity. Noise has been introduced to the system additively and multiplicatively. The TODF profiles have been monitored as a function of incident photon energy for different values of several important parameters. Moreover, the role of mode of application of noise (additive/multiplicative) on the TODF profiles has also been meticulously analyzed. We have found that the shift of TODF peak position and change in TODF peak height sensitively depend on presence/absence of noise and also on its mode of application. Introduction of multiplicative noise causes greater deviation of TODF profiles from that of noise-free condition than using additive noise.
