The wheel of a vehicle plays a vital role to bear the load applies on it. Generally spokes acts as the supports between the wheel rim and hub. These spokes must have sufficient strength and stiffness to avoid the failure of the wheel. In present days these wheels are made up of aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and steel. To reduce the weight of the wheel many wheel designs are implemented and applied for different vehicles. In this paper three different wheel designs are chosen, those are inclined spokes, curved spokes and Y shaped spokes made up of Al alloy, Mg alloy and Steel. Static structural analysis subjected to pressure on the wheel rim and free vibrational analyses are performed by using finite element analysis tool Ansys 12. The objective of the present work is to observe the best design which contains higher structural stiffness, specific structural stiffness with lower von mises stresses under static load conditions. It is observed that curve shaped spoke designs are better in for manufacturing of wheel in both static and dynamic point of view.

Automobile wheel hub of Mg alloy with single-step extrusion-forging process was developed, and the microstructure and mechanical properties after heat treatment were investigated. The forged hubs have a hub wall of as thin as 3mm, and 4-7kg lighter than that of Al alloy wheel hub with a same size and design of each wheel hub, that would lead remarkable reduction of fuel consumption. The tensile strength larger than 308 MPa, good corrosion fatigue and impacting resistance sampled from the hubs obtained.

Abstract: Response surface methodology is an efficient and powerful tool which is widely applied for casting optimization. In this research aluminum alloy wheel hub casting is done by using BOXBEHNKEN design, three level of each parameter were taken. Solid modeling of casting and gating system is done by CAD. Simulation of Aluminium Alloy (6061 T6) casting were perform in PRO-cast (2009.1) the simulation result indicates that selected parameters significantly affect the quality of casting. ANOVA is employed to examine the relationship between the factors. Input parameter namely flow rate, pouring temperature and runner size were taken to reduce the volume of shrinkage porosity. Experimental Design consist 15 experimental trials and output data obtained from simulation will be optimized through minitab-18. Result indicates that selected independent variables are significantly influence the response. ANOVA gives the optimized value of selected factors which reduces the porosity volume up to 30cm³. Alloy wheels are automobile wheels which are made from an alloy of aluminum or magnesium metals or sometimes a mixture of both. Alloy wheels differ from normal steel wheels because of their lighter weight, which improves the steering and the speed of the car. Alloy wheels will reduce the unstrung weight of a vehicle compared to one fitted with standard steel wheels. The benefit of reduced unstrung weight is more precise steering as well as a nominal reduction in fuel consumption. Alloy is an excellent conductor of heat, improving heat dissipation from the brakes, reducing the risk of brake failure under demanding driving conditions. At present four-wheeler wheels are made of Aluminum Alloys. In this project, Aluminum alloy are comparing with another Alloy. In this project a parametric model is designed for Alloy wheel used in four-wheeler by collecting data from reverse engineering process from existing model. Design is evaluated by analyzing the model by taking the constraints as ultimate stresses and variables as different alloy materials and different loads and goals as maximum outer diameter of the wheel and fitting accessories areas like shaft of the axle and bolts PCD of the car. Car model is Toyota.
