AbstractImpacted canines are one of the common problems encountered by the oral surgeon. Patients may present at different ages and many cases will be incidental findings. Close interaction with the paedodontist and orthodontist is required to get an optimal outcome. Surgical removal may not be the best treatment in all the cases and particular treatment plan will have to be tailored for the needs of the patient. Localizing the impacted canine seems not a challenge any more with the advent of CBCT, in indicated cases. This chapter elaborates on canine impaction, keeping in mind the basic principles mentioned in the chapter on third molar impactions. Premolars, incisors and other teeth may be impacted but most of the surgical principles and approaches mentioned for canine can be applied to them as well.

Abstract Objectives The aim was to evaluate the characteristics of the mandibular third molars, especially in relation to the inferior alveolar nerve. Further aims were to investigate incidental findings in panoramic radiographs in an adult population, and to investigate image quality related to patient positioning. Materials and Methods From a previous study with 451 randomly selected adult participants who lived in Sweden, 442 panoramic radiographs from four dental public health clinics were used. The third molars’ characteristics and relation to inferior alveolar nerve were evaluated. Incidental findings and patient positioning were recorded. Statistical Analysis Frequency analysis was used to investigate the occurrence of all findings and their possible interconnections. Whether the patients’ age or gender had an impact or not was also analyzed. Results The third molars were erupted in vertical position among 73% regardless of age. When retained or semi-retained, they were most commonly in mesioangular positions. The inferior alveolar nerve was located inferior to the roots in 52%, whereas an overlapped position was most common if the third molar was retained (90%), semi-retained (83%) or the age was less than 30 years (66%). Common incidental findings were apical radiolucencies, idiopathic osteosclerosis, and tooth fragments. Suboptimal patient positioning was found in one-third of the radiographs. Conclusions Panoramic radiography is a useful method to evaluate third molar prior to surgical removal and may be the only image required. Most incidental findings on panoramic radiographs does not seem to require any further odontological management.

Background: Impacted canines is the second most impacted tooth after third molar impaction, approximately 12%-15% of the population present with impacted canines. A supernumerary tooth is one that is additional to the normal series and can be found in almost any region of the dental arch. The incidence of an impacted canines as a sequent with a supernumerary tooth is very rare. Purpose: The aim of this case report is to add more information about a minor surgery due to canine and supernumerary tooth impaction for orthodontic treatment. Case and Management: We reported a case of a woman, 38 years old who have noticed a malocclution through the forwardness movement of her anterior teeth, due to the present of impacted canine and supernumerary. The patient consulted from orthodontic department to oral and maxillofacial department for further assessment, treatment and also the probability for surgical exposure of impacted canine. We have decided to do odontectomy for the impacted canine and supernumerary tooth as well at Oral and Maxillofacial department, Prof. Soedomo Hospital. The diagnosis process, exposure of impacted canine considerations are also discussed. Conclusion: the odontectomy for impacted canine and supernumerary teeth had performed as last options if there is impossible to do an exposure of an impacted canine.

The presence of asymptomatic third molars can represent a potential problem in the mandible when these teeth are retained and the patient has lost all normally erupted teeth. Once the mandibular first and second molars are removed, the mandibular body becomes weaker with time, increasing the complexity, morbidity and incidence of complication in the surgical procedure to remove the retained third molar. This paper reports a case where the mandibular third molars retained in a severely resorbed mandible were removed in a 54-year-old female patient. The treatment plan was based on the safe surgical removal of the teeth and prosthetic rehabilitation with an implant-supported milled bar overdenture and a bone-mucous-supported complete denture in the mandibular and maxillary arch, respectively. If the removal of a retained third molar is indicated in a severely resorbed edentulous mandible, the treatment plan must involve not only preventive measures in order to avoid mandible fracture during or after tooth removal, but also alternatives that allow an adequate mandibular rehabilitation.

The most commonly performed surgical procedure in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practices are the removal of impacted third molars. Extensive training, skill and experience allow this procedure to be performed in an atraumatic approach. The aim of this study was to drawing attention to the importance of the correct management of the complications cases of foreign body inside maxillary sinus after surgical removal of maxillary third molars. This is an unusual clinical case of a dental surgical bur accidentally displacement into the maxillary sinus during an upper third molar extraction surgery. After removal, the clinical case showed a satisfactory repair emphasizing the importance of a meticulous clinical examination to achieve a correct diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan, which is essential for a favorable prognosis.

Surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars are the most commonly performed minor surgical procedures by maxillofacial surgeon. If not treated can lead to few complications like pericoronitis, root resorption of second molar, caries of second molar, cyst and tumours can arise from them. The common complications include swelling, hematoma, trismus and lingual nerve injuries. In this article 1000 cases of various types impactions were surgically operated and assessment of lingual nerve injury was done.

AbstractAluminium nitride (AlN) is a futuristic material for efficient next-generation high-power electronic and optoelectronic applications. Sublimation growth of AlN single crystals with hetero-epitaxial approach using silicon carbide substrates is one of the two prominent approaches emerged, since the pioneering crystal growth work from 1970s. Many groups working on this hetero-epitaxial seeding have abandoned AlN growth altogether due to lot of persistently encountered problems. In this article, we focus on most of the common problems encountered in this process such as macro- and micro-hole defects, cracks, 3D-nucleation, high dislocation density, and incorporation of unintentional impurity elements due to chemical decomposition of the substrate at very high temperatures. Possible ways to successfully solve some of these issues have been discussed. Other few remaining challenges, namely low-angle grain boundaries and deep UV optical absorption, are also presented in the later part of this work. Particular attention has been devoted in this work on the coloration of the crystals with respect to chemical composition. Wet chemical etching gives etch pit density (EPD) values in the order of 105 cm-2 for yellow-coloured samples, while greenish coloration deteriorates the structural properties with EPD values of at least one order more.
