Principles of Discussion in Qualitative Educational Research

The purpose of this chapter is to offer perspectives of basic principles of writing discussion section in a qualitative research article or dissertation. The first portion of the chapter explains how to link the discussion of the findings to each component: brief summary of the findings, contribution to previous studies, contribution to the theory, implications, and limitations. The explanation includes examples that help readers get a glimpse of the connection. Built on the aforementioned explanation, this chapter also raises the common problems related to each element and further discusses the challenges for novice scholars. The second portion of the chapter focuses on scholars' expected development of knowledge and abilities for meaningfully connecting these five elements. Additionally, the importance of seeing findings through a holistic lens is discussed and meaningful implications for educational research, practice, and/or policy are provided.

This article introduces the new application of Raymond Padilla’s unfolding matrix in setting boundaries for postcollection qualitative data in educational research. It focuses on displaying the sample ways of using Padilla’s technique to solve the common problems of qualitative research when the researcher may have collected unnecessary data or may have missed important data in certain research. Using the sample of a real educational research aims to illustrate how this technique is used and modified to be different from its original versions. This article would call for attention and be helpful to any researchers with qualitative data of similar research contexts and designs.

Differences qualitative and quantitative research to academicians and researchers mainly concentrated on education  studies is only able to browse and identify with the fundamental difference merely as example: research that only uses quantitative data but using the qualitative as a benchmark often not considered as a quantitative research  Likewise ,  qualitative research that uses quantitative data is not considered qualitative research. If traced further, actually qualitative and quantitative research very spacious and is a level. Qualitative and quantitative research in the context of methodology includes a researcher's conception of social reality, the researcher's self placement in relation to the reality study and various other reviews. Therefore, in this research article,is stated that the correlation between qualitative and quantitative research in educational research methodology is possible if both are based on the same paradigm. Conversely qualitative and quantitative researchis difficult to reconcile if they depart from different paradigms, which have different epistemological assumptions, and different goodness criteria.

AbstractImpacted canines are one of the common problems encountered by the oral surgeon. Patients may present at different ages and many cases will be incidental findings. Close interaction with the paedodontist and orthodontist is required to get an optimal outcome. Surgical removal may not be the best treatment in all the cases and particular treatment plan will have to be tailored for the needs of the patient. Localizing the impacted canine seems not a challenge any more with the advent of CBCT, in indicated cases. This chapter elaborates on canine impaction, keeping in mind the basic principles mentioned in the chapter on third molar impactions. Premolars, incisors and other teeth may be impacted but most of the surgical principles and approaches mentioned for canine can be applied to them as well.

Saturation remains a problematic concept within the field of qualitative research, particularly with regard to issues of definition and process. This article sets out some of the common problems with saturation and, with reference to one research study, assesses the value of adopting a range of ‘conceptual depth criteria’ to address problems of definition and process when seeking to establish saturation within a grounded theory approach. It is suggested that the criteria can act as a test to measure the progress of the theoretical sampling and thus ascertain the readiness of the research for the final analytical stages and theory building. Moreover, the application of ‘conceptual depth criteria’ provides the researcher with an evaluative framework and a tool for producing a structured evidence base to substantiate choices made during the theoretical sampling process.

This study aimed at: 1) investigating the move and steps found in quantitative and qualitative research articles discussion; 2) investigating the rhetoric structure patterns of quantitative and qualitative research article discussion. This study is a qualitative-research focusing on genre analysis on qualitative and quantitative RA discussions. There were 20 qualitative and 20 quantitative research article discussions of EFL and applied linguistics journals were investigated in this research. Using Yang & Allison’s (2003) framework to analyze the data, it is found that all moves in the framework were employed in RA discussion of both qualitative and quantitative research. However, the number of occurrences of each move were different between discussion section of these two different approaches. Furthermore, the patterns of both qualitative and quantitative RA discussion was not significantly different. There were two types of patterns in RA discussion both in qualitative and quantitative, repetitive pattern and organized pattern. although there were some variations in each of those patterns. The present study provides more evidence of generic structure of RA discussion section as well as proposes some useful insights related to move analysis on research article discussion in ELT and Linguistics area. Limitations and recommendations are discussed in this study.

This study investigates the argument pattern in research articles by postgraduate students of English and Education University Bengkulu, based on Toulmin’s Theory (1958). This study analyzed the argument pattern, and reveal the type of data used by the student to support the claim in their argument contains in introduction section and discussion section of Journal Applied Lingusitic and Literature (JOALL) 2016. The data analysis result show that (a) the common argument pattern employed for arguments in introduction section of Research Article published in JOALL is Semi-complete pattern; (b) in discussion section the authors also commonly employ Semi-complete pattern. In addition (c) there are five types of data used by the authors to ground their arguments they are, Facts, Statistics, Example, Expert Opinion, and A Note on Visual. It can be conclude that the Research Article author published in JOALL have a good argumentative text based on Toulmin’s theory.

Karshya (Underweight) is one of the common problems in Indian preschool children & 43% Indian preschool children are underweight. One of important factor for Karshya is Hina Matra Ahara (inadequate quantity of food). About 75- 80% of Hospitalized children suffer from some degree or type of malnutrition. Lots of attempt have been made to minimize this at National level. Mid-day meal program to school going children alone will not be sufficient.so Aim of study is to review on management of Karshya. Material and Methods - Literary review was conducted with help of several important Ayurvedic and Modern textbooks, Research papers, Research Article, Journals to collect information on Karshya. The description of Karshya clearly correlates with under nutrition. Conclusion: Ayurveda can play major role in providing health to children. In Ayurveds, Balya an Bruhana Chikista for undernourished children is an interesting area in the field of Kaumarbhritya. Since we try to review of article on management of Karshya.

Arabs often mispronounce many sounds of English due to a lack of exposure to English as a foreign language. This research article focuses on pronunciation problems encountered by Arab undergraduate EFL learners. It uses questionnaires, recorded speech samples, and pronunciation tests as part of its methodology to analyze learners’ performance orally through repetition drills to help participants articulate the sounds of English through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Learning Management System. This research emphasizes the main question on the common problems encountered by EFL undergraduates with pronunciation skills. The study aims to train the students with pronunciation tests and phonemic inventory by repetition and imitation to overcome pronunciation miscues and fossilized miscues to enhance their pronunciation. This study is significant because it proposes feasible pedagogical techniques for imparting English sounds and initiating the learners to produce and acquire sounds more accurately, which will help Arab undergraduate EFL learners with their pronunciation problems. To achieve this goal, it proposes feasible pedagogical techniques to impart sounds of English and initiate the learners to produce and acquire sounds more accurately. One of the main findings of this research revealed that our EFL undergraduates have improved in their pronunciation through constant motivation and willingness to participate in the designed tests through Blackboard. Recommendations for further research would be on phonological awareness as an aid in learning EFL.

In research articles (RAs), the writers always express their arguments especially in discussion section. In this case, most of the writers tend to relate one idea to another to make their ideas coherent. This research article is done to investigate the logical connectors used by the writers of research articles, especially the logical connectors of three categories: logical connectors, frame markers, and Code Glosses. These linguistic devices are commonly used by the writers in academic or research articles (RAs). This is a qualitative research using the documents for analysis. These documents are taken from the research articles published in the academic journals which are collected by means of purposive sampling from the discussion sections of the RAs. The instrument used is called Taxonomy of Textual Meta-discourse. The results show that the writers have different strategies in using the logical connectors depending on which point they relate the ideas in the discussion sections. The results are expected to provide the readers with some logical connectors and some perspectives of the strategies of using logical connectors in research writing especially in the discussion sections.
