Kalanchoe blossfeldiana variety Tom Thumb was treated photoperiodically in regular and CO2-free air and examined at two widely separated time intervals for interrelationships among flowering, succulence, capacity for CO2 dark-fixation, and organic acid formation. These processes and leaf thickening are all under photoperiodic control and increase with increasing numbers of short-day treatments. They also occur in a CO2-free atmosphere on 9-hour photoperiods although CO2 dark-fixation and organic acid formation are limited to the low level of the long-day treated plants at 5 weeks' time. Only CO2 dark-fixation and organic acid formation appear to be interrelated and apparently utilize respiratory CO2 if treated in a CO2-free atmosphere. This capacity to use respiratory CO2 increases with maturity of the plants. Flowering does not control the development of succulence, organic acid formation, or the capacity for CO2 dark-fixation. Likewise, capacity for dark-fixation and organic acid formation do not control flowering and can occur in vegetative Tom Thumb plants that do not exhibit appreciable succulence.

AbstractIn this study, we investigated the effect of plant growth regulators (PGRs) - auxins, gibberellin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, brassinosteroid, ethylene and their interaction with methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) applied to roots of the whole plants Kalanchoe blossfeldiana on the accumulation of anthocyanins in roots. The highest stimulation of anthocyanins synthesis was stated with application of JA-Me alone. In response to treatments with the other tested PGRs, the content of anthocyanins in roots of a whole plant was different depending on the concentration of the PGR when being applied alone or together with JA-Me. Auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) at a concentration of 50 mg·L-1, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at 5 mg·L-1 and abscisic acid (ABA) at 10 mg·L-1 induced anthocyanin accumulation with approximately 60-115% compared to the control while 24-epibrassinolid (epiBL), gibberellic acid (GA3) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) had no effect on the anthocyanin accumulation. The simultaneous administration of the PGRs with JA-Me usually resulted in the accumulation of anthocyanins in roots in a manner similar to that caused by JA-Me. PGRs applied to isolated roots did not stimulate anthocyanin accumulation, except for the combination of JA-Me with 50 mg·L-1 IAA. The results indicate that in K. blossfeldiana, the aboveground parts of the plant play an important role in the biosynthesis of anthocyanins in roots.

Abstract Succulence-induction in Kalanchoe bloßfeldiana is demonstrated under long-day condition by application of a lipophilic fraction from flowering Kalanchoe. Different preparative TC separation steps yielded a partial purification of this fraction and the MS-identification of pterosterone (10-6 m), which is not necessary correlated with the above described physiological activity.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Poelln. is a common ornamental houseplant. Although powdery mildew is a major disease of this species, there are no published reports of it in the Pacific Northwest. In August, 2002, powdery mildew was observed on six indoor K. blossfeldiana plants in an office and adjacent laboratory at the Puyallup Research and Extension Center. Se evaluaron 4 dosis del fertilizante 15-20-25 fueron 2, 3, 4 y 5 gramos por litro de agua más un testigo. El objetivo fue Determinar la mejor dosis de 15-20-25 para favorecer la floración de Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. Los resultados mostraron que la variable Contenido de clorofila a los 90 días el mejor tratamiento fue el No. 4, con54.95 unidades SPAD, con una diferencia significativa del tratamiento 5 que fue el testigo con 44.64. En la variable de Diámetro de tallo el tratamiento que tuvo mejor resultado fue el tratamiento 2 con 0.741 centímetro, teniendo una diferencia significativa con el testigo. En la variable de número de hojas, el Tratamiento que tuvo mayor número fue el 4 con un total de 20 hojas. En este sentido vemos que el tratamiento que funcionó de mejor manera y que obtuvo mayor contenido de clorofila, mayor diámetro de tallo y numero de hojas fue el tratamiento No. 4, con una dosis de 5 gramos por litro, donde se pudo observar plantas vigorosas de hojas gruesas y color verde obscuro por el alto contenido de nitrógeno registrado en la planta siendo además las que primero iniciaron la etapa de floración y mejor calidad de ramo floral.
