Abstract Sandvik Ti-3Al-2.5V Grade 9 titanium-aluminum alloy offers excellent corrosion resistance, especially to chloride media, and has a high strength-to-weight ratio, which is especially suitable for use in aerospace applications. Tubing can be produced having a CSR (contractile strain ratio) that enhances the fatigue endurance limit. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, elasticity, tensile properties, and bend strength as well as fatigue. Cable tensile forces in winch-assist harvesting have been investigated in order to assess the safety concerns of the technology. However, the literature is lacking, particularly in regards to the impact of winch design. In this study, a Summit Winch Assist tethering a feller-director on ground slopes up to 77% was monitored for four days. The cable tensile forces were simultaneously recorded at the harvesting and anchor machine at a frequency of 100 Hz. Cameras and GNSS devices enabled a time study of the operations and the recording of machine positions. Winch functionality and design were disclosed by the manufacturer and used for the interpretation of the results. The cable tensile forces reached 296 kN at the harvesting machine and 260 kN at the anchor machine. The slow negotiation of obstacles while moving downhill recorded the highest peaks, mainly due to threshold settings of the winch in the brake system activation. Lower but significant peaks were also recorded during stationary work tasks. The peaks, however, were limited to a few events and never exceeded the endurance limit of the cable. Overall, the study confirmed recent findings in cable tensile force analysis of active winch-assist operations and provided evidence of the underlaying mechanisms that contribute to cable tensile forces.

Bubble inclusions present in cast acrylic plastic generally degrade the mechanical properties of the material. To evaluate the effect of bubbles on the mechanical strength of acrylic plastic, 120 tensile and compressive test specimens were machined from massive acrylic castings with bubble inclusions. The specimens were tested under uniaxial loading condition and effect of bubbles on tensile and compressive strength noted. The stress raiser effect of bubbles caused the tensile specimens to fail at stresses 7 to 30 percent lower than observed in specimens without bubbles. The compressive yield strength was not affected by bubbles. However, here the bubbles served as stress raisers also and caused cracks to initiate at the bubble surfaces when the yield strength of acrylic plastic was reached.

Fatigue tests are carried out for 16MnR welded joint under constant strain control. Test results reveal that 16MnR weld metal exhibits characteristic of cyclic softening and non-masing obviously. The strain–life curve can be best described by the three-parameter equation. It shows the fatigue endurance limit in the heat-affecting zone (HAZ) of welded joint is lower than that in the weld metal.

Asphalt concrete healing is one of the important concepts related to flexible pavement structures. Fatigue endurance limit (FEL) is defined as the strain limit under which no damage will be accumulated in the pavement and is directly related to asphalt healing. Pavement section designed to handle a strain value equivalent to the endurance limit (EL) strain will be considered as a perpetual pavement. All four-point bending beam fatigue testing results from the NCHRP 944-A project were extracted and utilized in the development of artificial neural network (ANN) EL strain predictive model based on mixture volumetric properties and loading conditions. ANN model architecture, as well as the prediction process of the EL strain utilizing the generated model, were presented and explained. Furthermore, a stand-alone equation that predicts the EL strain value was extracted from the developed ANN model utilizing the eclectic approach. Moreover, the EL strain value was predicted utilizing the new equation and compared with the EL strain value predicted by other prediction models available in literature. A total of 705 beam fatigue lab test data points were utilized in model training and evaluation at ratios of 70%, 15%, and 15% for training, testing, and validation, respectively. The developed model is capable of predicting the EL strain value as a function of binder grade, temperature, air void content, asphalt content, SR, failure cycles number, and rest period. The reliability of the developed stand-alone equation and the ANN model was presented by reasonable coefficient of determination (R2) value and significance value (F).
