Tuber dry rot is an important disease of potato caused by soil and seed-borne pathogens of the Fusarium genus leading to losses that may reach 60% of the yield. The goal of this work was to study the inheritance of the dry rot resistance in two diploid potato hybrid populations (11-36 and 12-3) with complex pedigrees, including several wild Solanum spp. We used an aggressive isolate of F. sambucinum for phenotyping both progenies, parents, and standard potato cultivars in laboratory tuber tests, in three subsequent years. The QTL for dry rot resistance were mapped by interval mapping on existing genetic maps of both mapping populations. The most important and reproducible QTL for this trait was mapped on chromosome I and additional year- and population-specific QTL were mapped on chromosomes II, VII, IX, XI, and XII, confirming polygenic control of this resistance. This is the first study mapping the loci affecting tuber dry rot resistance in potato genome that can contribute to better understanding of potato-F. sambucinum interaction and to more efficient breeding of resistant potato cultivars.

Abstract The aim of this work was to assess quality deficiencies in three potato cultivars (Christian, Roclas, and Cumidava) during the storage period. According to the results, the Roclas presented the highest level of susceptibility to pathogens; this, however, can be attributed to the dry rot that causes greater damage in this cultivar. No significant positive correlations between the plant’s vegetative parameters and the most dangerous diseases and pests in Christian were detected. There was a significant positive correlation between the biomass of the tubers and the silver scurf blemish disease, respectively between tuber numbers and dry rot in Cumidava and significant positive correlations between tuber numbers and the silver scurf blemish disease, between biomass of the tubers and dry rot, respectively between tuber numbers and wireworm larvae at Roclas. Altogether, we can conclude that the most susceptible cultivar was Roclas followed by Cumidava, while the least susceptible was the Christian cultivar.

The paper presents the results of a three-year exact plot experiment (2008-2010) established in Bałcyny (NE Poland). Three potato cultivars were grown: medium-early &lsquo;Adam&rsquo;, medium-late &lsquo;Pasja Pomorska&rsquo;, and late &lsquo;Ślęza&rsquo;. The experimental factors were foliar fertilizers applied alone or in combination (Basfoliar 12-4-6, ADOB Mn, Solubor DF) and two levels of soil mineral fertilization (N<sub>1</sub>P<sub>1</sub>K<sub>1</sub>-80 kg N × ha<sup>-1</sup>, 80 kg P × ha<sup>-1</sup>, 120 K × ha<sup>-1</sup>; N<sub>2</sub>P<sub>2</sub>K<sub>2</sub>-120 kg N × ha<sup>-1</sup>, 144 kg P × ha<sup>-1</sup>, 156 K × ha<sup>-1</sup>). The experimental materials comprised potato tubers. The symptoms of soft rot (<em>Pectobacterium carotovorum </em>subsp. <em>carotovorum</em>), late blight (<em>Phytophthora infestans</em>) and dry rot (<em>Fusarium </em>spp.) were evaluated in 5 kg potato samples, and were expressed as the percentage mass of infected tubers. The rates of common scab (<em>Streptomyces scabies</em>) and black scurf (<em>Rhizoctonia solani</em>) infection were estimated on 100 tubers collected randomly after harvest, according to a nine-point scale, and were presented as a percentage infection index. In the laboratory, fungi were isolated on PDA medium from potato tubers immediately after harvest and after five-month storage. The incidence of tuber diseases depended on potato cultivars affected. The severity of tuber diseases varied between treatments with two levels of NPK fertilization and foliar fertilization. The lowest number of <em>Fusarium-</em>infected tubers was obtained from treatments where three foliar fertilizers were applied in combination, which was confirmed by the lowest abundance of fungal isolates. More fungi were isolated from potato tubers after harvest than after storage, but pathogens were more frequently isolated from stored tubers. After harvest, the lowest number of pathogenic fungi was isolated from the tubers of cv. &lsquo;Adam&rsquo; in the non-fertilized treatment, and after storage – from the tubers of the late cultivars in the treatment with three foliar fertilizers applied in combination.

Investigations on effect of dry root (<i>F. solani</i> var. <i>coeruleum</i> and <i>F. sulphureum</i>) pathogens on three potato cultivares Azalia, Pola, Odra chemical composition were carried out. Content of total nitrogen and protein, total saccharides, reducting and bisaccharides and vit. C was investigated. Significant decrease of total and protein nitrogen content in potatoes affected by <i>Fusarium</i> in relation to intact tubers was found. Moreover increase of reducting saccharides and bisaccharides in potatoes infected by <i>Fusarium</i> compared with controls was observed. Level of vit. C was decreased in tubers affected by <i>Fusarium</i> in all potato cultivars. In this experiment changes in chemical composition content in potato tubers were connected with a kind of dry rot patogen.

The paper analyzes fungi of the genus Fusarium isolated from plants and tubers of different potato cultivars grown on the territory of Tatarstan. It was established that the majority of the strains belonged to the Fusarium oxysporum species complex. Isolates obtained from the root necks of wilting potato plants and conditionally healthy tubers are, to varying degrees, capable of causing dry rot of tubers during artificial inoculation. Also, the virulence of the strains does not correlate with extracellular proteolytic activity. It was shown that the tubers of the Zhukovskij rannij cultivar are most sensitive to fusaria infections, in contrast to the Red Scarlet and Reggi cultivars.
