In this study, three different diameters of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed by polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were used to reinforce superfine cement grouting materials. The effect of MWCNTs and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) on the rheological properties of grouting material were accordingly studied. It was found that the yield stress (τ0) and plastic viscosity (η) were slightly decreased when PVP content was low and increased when the PVP content increased. The effect of MWCNT diameter on τ0 was not found to be clear but was more significant on η. The smaller MWCNT diameter was, the more quickly η increase. It was also found that the thixotropic ring area was increased as the MWCNTs content increased. The addition of PVP and MWCNTs caused an increase in the number of entanglement points in different scales, which was the main reason for the viscosity and thixotropy increase. Therefore, the rheological properties of superfine cement grouting material should be adjusted when MWCNTs were added as a reinforcing component. Due to the wrapping of PVP on cement particles which isolates the contacting part between the water and the cement particles, it slows down the cement's hydration rate thus slows down the fluidity loss of the slurry.

We report flexible polyurethane foams (PUFs) containing –OH functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different diameters (10–20 nm, 20–30 nm, >50 nm) from 0.1–0.6 wt% (per 100 resins of polyol by weight) prepared via in situ polymerization. After synthesis, the morphology of the MWCNT/PUF composites was observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) based on MWCNT amount. The MWCNTs acted as nucleating agents and increased the matrix viscosity. The pore size of the composites decreased and the number of pores increased with increasing MWCNT concentration. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that the storage modulus of the composites increased, the loss modulus decreased, and the Tg gradually decreased with increasing MWCNT content. The incorporation of MWCNTs induced remarkable thermal stabilization of the matrix. The increase in the degradation temperature from 294°C to 304°C resulted in a 50% weight loss. The mechanical properties of the MWCNT/PUF materials increased with increasing MWCNT proportion because of the excellent compatibility and strong interface interaction between the MWCNT and flexible PUF.

The effects of irradiation on the structure of purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) having 6-19 graphitic shells and outer diameters of 8.15-17.11 nm were investigated using electron beam of energies 200 keV and dose of 2.16 x 1017 e cm-2s-1. It was observed that the electron irradiation created a number of chronological alterations in the tube structures. These were identified to be tube contraction, destruction of the innermost graphitic shell, deformation of graphitic shells and its proliferation, break down of the graphitic shells and their spreading into the tube hole and finally the destruction of the whole tube. MWCNTs having the largest innermost diameter found suffer from the highest contraction. The tube contraction behavior found stops when the innermost graphitic shell starts to destroy. Irradiation affected the innermost graphitic shell first and that of the smallest diameter was the more rapidly. It occurred probably due to having the highest curvature value. Tubes having inner shell of diameter about 4.8 nm suffer from fractional destruction within 5-15 s of irradiation exposure. Such a shell was ruined within 1 minute of irradiation exposure but that of diameter 7.0 nm was survived up to 2 minutes. It seems that the irradiation induced defects created in the MWCNTs can be used for the diversified applications of nanotubes such as the hydrogen storage enhancement in them. We have developed and synthesized nanobiocomposite materials based on graphene, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), and glucose oxidase immobilized on the surface of various nanomaterials (gold nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes) of different sizes (carbon nanotubes of different diameters). Comparative studies of the possible influence of the nanomaterials nature on the bioelectrocatalytic characteristics of glucose-oxidizing bioanodes in a neutral phosphate buffer solution demonstrated that the bioelectrocatalytic current densities of nanocomposite-based bioanodes are only weakly dependent on the size of the nanomaterial and are primarily defined by its nature. The developed nanobiocomposites are promising materials for new bioelectronic devices due to the ease in adjusting their capacitive and bioelectrocatalytic characteristics, which allows one to use them for the production of dual-function electrodes: i.e., electrodes which are capable of generating and storing electric power simultaneously.

AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNT) are interesting candidates for the reinforcement in robust composites and for conducting fillers in polymers due to their fascinating electronic and mechanical properties. For the first time, we report the incorporation of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) into silica-glass surfaces by means of partial surface-melting caused by a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. MWNTs were detected being well incorporated in the silica-surface. The composites are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman-spectroscopy. A model for the composite-formation is proposed based on heatabsorption by MWNTs and a partial melting of the silica-surface.
