AbstractTemporal graphs are structures which model relational data between entities that change over time. Due to the complex structure of data, mining statistically significant temporal subgraphs, also known as temporal motifs, is a challenging task. In this work, we present an efficient technique for extracting temporal motifs in temporal networks. Our method is based on the novel notion of egocentric temporal neighborhoods, namely multi-layer structures centered on an ego node. Each temporal layer of the structure consists of the first-order neighborhood of the ego node, and corresponding nodes in sequential layers are connected by an edge. The strength of this approach lies in the possibility of encoding these structures into a unique bit vector, thus bypassing the problem of graph isomorphism in searching for temporal motifs. This allows our algorithm to mine substantially larger motifs with respect to alternative approaches. Furthermore, by bringing the focus on the temporal dynamics of the interactions of a specific node, our model allows to mine temporal motifs which are visibly interpretable. Experiments on a number of complex networks of social interactions confirm the advantage of the proposed approach over alternative non-egocentric solutions. The egocentric procedure is indeed more efficient in revealing similarities and discrepancies among different social environments, independently of the different technologies used to collect data, which instead affect standard non-egocentric measures.

In the paper there are discussed the most interesting methods dedicated to frescos structural health monitoring. In the further part two methods and devices for fresco delamination detection developed by authors are presented. In order to enable future automation of developed measurement techniques and autonomic detection of fresco structural defects, the novel measures quantifying the probability of critical condition appearance (the lack of adhesive force) were introduced. Finally, the results of measurements of dynamic characteristics of healthy and delaminated structures are presented.

The article is dedicated to the reconstruction of the concept of “besporyadok” (“disorder”) in the novel The Adolescent, considering the distinction between the intentions of the actual author and the hero-creator. The complex structure of the author’s concept is reconstructed using Dostoevsky’s workbooks for February 1874 – November 1875, and the key element of it is stated to be the “internal disorder” that occurs when a person’s soul is poisoned with devilry. It is argued that this type of besporyadok (“disorder”), correlated by Dostoevsky with the phenomenon of bezobrazie (“ugliness”), serves as a source and catalyst for “family disorder”, “secular disorder”, and “general disorder”. The adolescent, illustrating all the listed facets of the author’s concept, naturally focuses on comprehending the “internal disorder”, which at the end of his “Notes” acquires the concept-name of “bezobrazie”. The gradual “deployment” of this concept by Arkady Dolgoruky sets the dynamics of the narrative, reflects the ongoing process of samovidelka (“self-creation”), based on the movement of the hero from the feeling of bezobrazie (“ugliness”) to the beginning of his consciousness. It is argued that Dostoevsky’s perception of besporyadok (“disorder”) and besovstvo (“devilry”) as related phenomena provoking general decomposition, an increase of the chaos in the macro and microcosm, and thirst for self-destruction, does not predetermine a constantly negative modality in their artistic embodiment. In the light of the “realism in the highest sense”, the manifestations of besporyadok (“disorder”) are often seen by Dostoevsky as an impulse for renewal, purification, and transformation. Arkady Dolgoruky, due to his age and spiritual weakness, is deprived of the opportunity to perceive bezobrazie (ugliness) in such an expanded focus, therefore in his conceptosphere this unit is not ambivalent in itself, but is a negative element opposed to blagoobrazie (goodness).

This article proposes to study the pre-textual germinal documents and those that allow us to identify the most representative work settings of the production process of the novel Boquitas pintadasby the Argentinian writer Manuel Puig. These materials explain unfinished decisions for formalizing and sharping a reasoned plan of production, as opposed to an improvised writing. They also allow identifying certain habits in the literary production mode initiated in this plan and sustained in the rest of the author's narrative production. The article also proposes focusing on two central aspects which Puig attends from the beginning of his planning: the articulation between the plot and the complex structure of the novel.

Persistent homology (PH) is a rigorous mathematical theory that provides a robust descriptor of data in the form of persistence diagrams (PDs). PDs exhibit, however, complex structure and are difficult to integrate in today's machine learning workflows. This paper introduces persistence bag-of-words: a novel and stable vectorized representation of PDs that enables the seamless integration with machine learning. Comprehensive experiments show that the new representation achieves state-of-the-art performance and beyond in much less time than alternative approaches.

Profiling the genetic evolution and dynamic spreading of viruses is a crucial task when responding to epidemic outbreaks. We aim to devise novel ways to model, visualise and analyse the temporal dynamics of epidemic outbreaks in order to help researchers and other people involved in crisis response to make well-informed and targeted decisions about from which geographical locations and time periods more genetic samples may be required to fully understand the outbreak. Our approach relies on the application of Transcendental Information Cascades to a set of temporally ordered nucleotide sequences and we apply it to real-world data that was collected during the currently ongoing outbreak of the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus. We assess information-theoretic and network-theoretic measures that characterise the resulting complex network and suggest touching points and temporal pathways that are of interest for deeper investigation by geneticists and epidemiologists.

TNXB-related classical-like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (TNXB-clEDS) is an ultrarare type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome due to biallelic null variants in TNXB, encoding tenascin-X. Less than 30 individuals have been reported to date, mostly of Dutch origin and showing a phenotype resembling classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome without atrophic scarring. TNXB-clEDS is likely underdiagnosed due to the complex structure of the TNXB locus, a fact that complicates diagnostic molecular testing. Here, we report two unrelated Italian women with TNXB-clEDS due to compound heterozygosity for null alleles in TNXB. Both presented soft and hyperextensible skin, generalized joint hypermobility and related musculoskeletal complications, and chronic constipation. In addition, individual 1 showed progressive finger contractures and shortened metatarsals, while individual 2 manifested recurrent subconjunctival hemorrhages and an event of spontaneous rupture of the brachial vein. Molecular testing found the two previously unreported c.8278C > T p.(Gln2760*) and the c.(2358 + 1_2359 − 1)_(2779 + 1_2780 − 1)del variants in Individual 1, and the novel c.1150dupG p.(Glu384Glyfs*57) and the recurrent c.11435_11524+30del variants in Individual 2. mRNA analysis confirmed that the c.(2358 + 1_2359 − 1)_(2779 + 1_2780 − 1)del variant causes a frameshift leading to a predicted truncated protein [p.(Thr787Glyfs*40)]. This study refines the phenotype recently delineated in association with biallelic null alleles in TNXB, and adds three novel variants to its mutational repertoire. Unusual digital anomalies seem confirmed as possibly peculiar of TNXB-clEDS, while vascular fragility could be more than a chance association also in this Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type.

Metal complexes containing diimine ligands such as 1,10-phenanthroline and bipyridine are very important and widely used in analytical chemistry, catalysis, electrochemistry, ring-opening metathesis polymerization and biochemistry. 1,10-phenanthroline, which is the parent for important class chelating agents, has been widely used in the construction of supramolecular architectures. Lots of phenanthroline and its derivatives complex have been synthesized and reported. In the paper, a novel Mn and 3,4,6,7-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline complex [Mn(C16H16N2)2] •Cl2 has been synthesized from a solution reaction and the crystal structure has been determined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Mn(C16H16N2)2] •Cl2, Orthorhombic, Pnna. a = 8.8376(8)Å b = 18.3630(17)Å c = 18.0159(18)Å α=β=γ=90°. V= 2923.7(5)Å3. Z=4. Rgt(F) = 0.0341, wRref(F2) = 0.0958. T= 273(2) K. The novel Mn metal complex structure is explained clearly.
