The third session of the West Indian Conference opened at Guadeloupe, French West Indies on December 1, 1948 and closed on December 14, after considering policy to be followed by the Caribbean Commission for the next two years. The Conference was attended by two delegates from each of the fifteen territories within the jurisdiction of the commission and observers invited by the commission from Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the United Nations and its specialized agencies.

Background In Caucasian populations Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO-IgG) antibody has been detected in 27.1% / 78.2% of patients with relapsing-NMO (R-NMO). The prevalence reported for the disease in the Caribbean is 3.1/100,000 in the French West Indies (FWI) and 0.52 /100,000 in Cuba, but the NMO antibody status is unknown. Objective To assess the NMO-IgG antibody status of Cuban/FWI RNMO patients, comparing with European cases tested at the same laboratories. Methods Serum NMO-IgG antibodies were assayed in 48 R-NMO patients (Wingerchuck´s 1999 criteria): Cuba (24)/FWI (24), employing Lennon et al´s method. We compared the demographic, clinical, disability and laboratory data between NMO-IgG +/- patients. All the data were reviewed and collected blinded to the NMO-IgG status. Results Seropositivity of the NMO-IgG antibody demonstrated a lower rate in the Caribbean (33.3%), as compared with Caucasian patients from Spain/Italy (62.5%) and France (53.8%). Caribbean patients with NMO-IgG (+) displayed more attacks, more spinal attacks and a higher EDSS than NMO-IgG (-) cases, while brain and spinal cord MRI lesions were more frequent during remission, with more vertebral segments, more gray, white matter and holocord involvement. Conclusions NMO IgG positive antibodies in NMO patients had a lower rate in the Caribbean area – where the population has a predominant African ancestry – than in Caucasian Europeans, suggesting the influence of a possible ethnic factor in the pathogenesis of the disease, but they confer a worse course with more attacks, more disability and MRI lesions.

In this day of ever-expanding influence of English it is rare to find a people who are shifting away from the use of English. Such is the case of the speakers of a variety of English spoken in the port town of Gustavia, St. Barthélemy in the French West Indies. The varieties of French and French Creole on St. Barths have been well documented, but there has been only passing mention of the variety of English spoken on the island. While the presence of this English variety in the Caribbean may not seem to be an anomaly, there are interesting questions to investigate regarding its origin and the shift to French. I consider some historical and linguistic evidence that may help to explain the presence of an English variety on this French island. I also investigate the origins of some non-standard English features and whether or not there is evidence of creolization. Finally, I describe some of the sociolinguistic factors relevant to the remaining English speakers in Gustavia and factors involved in their shift from English to French.

The third session of the biennial West Indian Conference met at Guadeloupe, French West Indies, from December 1 to 14, 1948, and made many recommendations to be followed by the Caribbean Commission. Committee I concerned itself with the report of the Secretary-General (Cramer) who had advised that there was a growing need for undertaking more specific projects which could be tackled within the framework of the organization and within its present resources. The committee recommended that the Commission continue to appoint to permanent positions on the secretariat, West Indians of proved ability; that, before any recommendation of the conference was accepted the Secretary-General should make an estimate of the administrative and financial implications of undertaking the project; that if any project depended for its success on the cooperation of territorial governments the project should not be undertaken before such cooperation was assured; and that the Monthly Information Bulletin should include all available information on legislation affecting social and economic developments in the various territories.

Abstract Background Given the public health urgency facing the increasing rates of obesity and chronic diseases in the Caribbean, characterization of the nutrition transition and population groups at higher nutritional risk is needed. We identified dietary patterns in the French West Indies (FWI) and their association with individual characteristics. Methods This cross-sectional analysis included 1,144 Guadeloupeans and Martinicans from a representative survey. To identify dietary patterns, principal component analysis was performed using 25 food groups, followed by a clustering procedure classifying subjects in independent clusters. Their associations with health status, Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I), food supply behaviors, sociodemographic and economic characteristics were studied using multivariable models. Results Four dietary patterns were identified, representing 25%, 24%, 31% and 20% of the sample: (1) a “healthy” cluster characterised by a high DQI-I, composed of high educated individuals; (2) a “traditional” cluster with a high DQI-I and high intakes of traditional dishes, formed mostly by women and older persons, with a high obesity prevalence (26%); (3) a “western” cluster with a low DQI-I, high intakes of sweetened beverages, snacks and fast foods, composed mainly of young subjects, buying their fruits, vegetables and tubers only or mainly in supermarkets; and (4) a “transitional” cluster with high intakes of bread, processed meat, sauces, alcoholic and sweetened beverages but conversely high intakes of tubers, legumes, fish and low intakes of biscuits and cakes, formed mainly by middle age men, self-employed or manual workers, and 35% had metabolic syndrome. Conclusions The dietary patterns identified reflect different steps of dietary change as described by Popkin, suggesting an ongoing nutrition transition in the FWI. This characterization provides useful information for public health actions regarding population groups at higher nutritional risk. Key messages Four diversified dietary patterns were identified suggesting an ongoing nutrition transition in the French West Indies. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics associated with dietary patterns, especially age, reflecting a generational contrast, provided needed information to guide future public health measures.

Here, we describe the genome sequence of ECC486. This Enterobacter oligotrophicus strain was isolated from a wild Anolis marmoratus speciosus specimen, a lizard endemic to the territory of Guadeloupe (French West Indies). Its draft genome sequence consists of 40 contigs and contains a total of 4,504,233 bp, with a G+C content of 54.1%.

Abstract BackgroundBibliometrics are mathematical methods used in various scientific domains to measure scientific output based on the number of publications, the prestige of the journal, and the number of citations of the research after its publication. To the best of our knowledge, only a few bibliometric studies have been performed in the Caribbean or the French West Indies. The aim of this study was to quantify the collaborations and scientific output between the two university teaching hospitals of Martinique and Guadeloupe, at the regional, national and international level.MethodA bibliometrics analysis was performed from the international databases Web of Science and PubMed, for the period from 1989 to 2018 inclusive (30 years). Three types of bibliometric indicators were used, namely quantitative indicators, performance indicators, and organisation-specific indicators. Affiliations of the first and last authors were identified from PubMed. Between 2014 and 2018, we recorded the affiliations of all authors (from the first to the last author) who collaborated on an article with the University Hospital of either Martinique of GuadeloupeResultsBetween 1989 and 2018, a total of 1,522 indexed articles were published with at least one author affiliated to either the University Hospital of Martinique (N=827) or the University Hospital of Guadeloupe (N=685). The majority of articles for both hospitals were in category Q1 (35.8% for Martinique, and 35.2% for Guadeloupe). In Martinique, over the last 30 years, the 3 main research areas have been clinical neurology, ophthalmology and surgery, together representing 28.7% of all research areas, with the highest number of articles published in the field of clinical neurology (n=81). In the University Hospital of Guadeloupe, the area of hematology was largely represented, with 79 articles published. For both hospitals, the first and last authors of the articles published were mainly from mainland France, and from either Martinique or Guadeloupe university hospitalConclusionThis quantitative and qualitative analysis shows the development of medical and scientific research in Martinique and Guadeloupe over the last three decades, as well as the extent of their collaborative partnerships at national and international level.

The land flatworm Platydemus manokwari (Platyhelminthes, Geoplanidae) is recorded from the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Martin in the Caribbean arc. Photographs and records were obtained mainly from citizen science and ranged from the end of 2018 to February 2021; several specimens were deposited in the collections of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, France. Thirty records were from Guadeloupe, but only one from Martinique and from Saint Martin, respectively. The COI sequences of 3 specimens from Guadeloupe show that they belong to the World haplotype also found in many countries. We also report P. manokwari from Fort Myers, Florida, USA, with molecular characterization, which was also the World haplotype. This is the first published record of P. manokwari for Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint Martin and the second for islands in the Caribbean, after Puerto Rico.
