VVER-1000 reactors use cylindrical smooth-core fuel rods. Previously, a model to determe the fuel rod temperature field in a two-dimensional problem statement has been developed and verified. However, modelling assumptions do not consider the influence of variable thermophysical properties, radiation heat transfer, and the opening in the fuel rod on the final parameters of the temperature fields. The impact assessment is an urgent task to improve the economic efficiency of the fuel cycle and the capacity of power units. To develop models and study the features of energy release in nuclear reactors, a numerical package of thermophysical modeling COMSOL Multiphysics software is used. The simulation of temperature fields is performed based on the heat equation with an internal heat source, under the boundary conditions of the second kind at the ends of the fuel rod and the boundary conditions of the third kind on the side surface of the rod. Аn axisymmetric model in two-dimensional problem statement and a three-dimensional model of the fuel rod are developed. The temperature distribution fields are determined by the finite element method. The results of calculations of various design fuel rods are presented. The results have showen that the radiation heat transfer significantly affects the maximum fuel temperature (UO2). The impact degree of variability of thermophysical properties and radiation heat transfer is determined. It was found that the temperature characteristics under different specified conditions have a difference in the range of 15,5–282,0 K (0,8–14,4 %). The developed models are reliable and confirmed by the previously verified model, the characteristics of the fuel assembly used on the VVER-1000 units. The results presented can be used for mathematical modeling of heat transfer processes, both during the modernization of the equipment in operation, and during the development, design, and operation, which will increase the efficiency of electric energy generation at the power unit of a nuclear power plant.

The Impact

To simulate the dynamics of two-dimensional dam-break flow on a dry horizontal bed, we use a smoothed particle hydrodynamics model implementing two advanced boundary treatment techniques: (i) a semi-analytical approach, based on the computation of volume integrals within the truncated portions of the kernel supports at boundaries and (ii) an extension of the ghost-particle boundary method for mobile boundaries, adapted to free-slip conditions. The trends of the free surface along the channel, and of the impact wave pressures on the downstream vertical wall, were first validated against an experimental case study and then compared with other numerical solutions. The two boundary treatment schemes accurately predicted the overall shape of the primary wave front advancing along the dry bed until its impact with the downstream vertical wall. Compared to data from numerical models in the literature, the present results showed a closer fit to an experimental secondary wave, reflected by the downstream wall and characterized by complex vortex structures. The results showed the reliability of both the proposed boundary condition schemes in resolving violent wave breaking and impact events of a practical dam-break application, producing smooth pressure fields and accurately predicting pressure and water level peaks.

Numerical investigation of efficiency of UNO- and TVD-modifications of the Godunov method of the second order accuracy for computation of linear waves in an elastic body in comparison with the classical Godunov method is carried out. To this end, one-dimensional cylindrical Riemann problems are considered. It is shown that the both modifications are considerably more accurate in describing radially converging as well as diverging longitudinal and shear waves and contact discontinuities both in one- and two-dimensional problem statements. At that the UNO-modification is more preferable than the TVD-modification because exact implementation of the TVD property in the TVD-modification is reached at the expense of “cutting” solution extrema.

The Impact

: Increasing energy crisis across the globe requires immediate solutions. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are in great significance because of its application in energy storage and conversion devices but the production process significantly impacts the environment thereby posing a severe problem in the field of pollution control. Green synthesis method provides an eminent way of reduction in pollutants. This article reviews the importance of green synthesis in the energy application sector. The focus of 2D materials like graphene, MoS2, VS2 in energy storage and conversion devices are emphasized based on supporting recent reports. The emerging Li-ion batteries are widely reviewed along with their promising alternatives like Zn, Na, Mg batteries and are featured in detail. The impact of green methods in the energy application field are outlined. Moreover, future outlook in the energy sector is envisioned by proposing an increase in 2D elemental materials research.

In this paper, the characteristic of grinding force in two-dimensional ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding nano-ceramic was studied by experiment based on indentation fracture mechanics, and mathematical model of grinding force was established. The study shows that grinding force mainly result from the impact of the grains on the workpiece in ultrasonic grinding, and the pulse power is much larger than normal grinding force. The ultrasonic vibration frequency is so high and the contact time of grains with the workpiece is so short that the pulse force will be balanced by reaction force from workpiece. In grinding workpiece was loaded by the periodical stress field, which accelerates the fatigue fracture.

A two-dimensional, mathematical model is adopted to investigate the development of buoyancy driven circulation patterns and temperature contours inside a rectangular enclosure filled with a compressible fluid (Pr=1.0). One of the vertical walls of the enclosure is kept at a higher temperature then the opposing vertical wall. The top and the bottom of the enclosure are assumed insulated. The physics based mathematical model for this problem consists of conservation of mass, momentum (two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations) and energy equations for the enclosed fluid subjected to appropriate boundary conditions. The working fluid is assumed to be compressible through a simple ideal gas relation. The governing equations are discretized using second order accurate central differencing for spatial derivatives and first order forward finite differencing for time derivatives where the computation domain is represented by a uniform orthogonal mesh. The resulting nonlinear equations are then linearized using Newton’s linearization method. The set of algebraic equations that result from this process are then put into a matrix form and solved using a Coupled Modified Strongly Implicit Procedure (CMSIP) for the unknowns (primitive variables) of the problem. A numerical experiment is carried out for a benchmark case (driven cavity flow) to verify the accuracy of the proposed solution procedure. Numerical experiments are then carried out using the proposed compressible flow model to simulate the development of the buoyancy driven circulation patterns for Rayleigh numbers between 103 and 105. Finally, an attempt is made to determine the effect of compressibility of the working fluid by comparing the results of the proposed model to that of models that use incompressible flow assumptions together with Boussinesq approximation.

The practical requirements of the project the nozzle entrance temperature is high, the gas specific heat ratio varies greatly, so it must consider the specific heat ratio change impact on two-dimensional nozzle contour design. Divided into consideration specific heat ratio change and not consider two kinds of scheme design of 1.4Ma nozzle profile and build the model using the arc line method, numerical simulation is carried out through the CFD software Fluent, analysis of two kinds of design scheme comparison. The results show that, in the supersonic nozzle at low Maher numbers, two schemes of nozzle design profile similarity, parameters change little flow tube, export the Maher number and the flow quality can meet the design requirements, proof of specific heat ratio has little effect on the design results in the design of the nozzle under the condition of low Maher number.
