Study of the accumulation of contaminants by Cyperus alternifolius, Lemna minor, Eichhornia crassipes, and Canna × generalis in some contaminated aquatic environments

El objetivo de la investigación fue encontrar plantas acuáticas con potencial de remover E. coli y coliformes totales de agua contaminada. Para ello, se realizaron muestreos en Río Guayas, Recinto Aguas Frías y Estero Peñafiel, donde se seleccionaron las especies: Azolla caroliniana, Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Salvinia auriculata y Lemna minor (Control positivo). Las plantas se reprodujeron in vitro y se realizaron bioensayos para verificar su capacidad de remover E. coli y coliformes. Los ensayos se realizaron por triplicado en 0,5 L de agua con fertilizante y se inoculó una cepa de referencia E. coli ATCC25922.  Como control negativo se inoculó la bacteria sin plantas y control positivo con la planta Lemna sp. Después de 7 días se determinó la carga bacteriana remanente. Se encontró un porcentaje de eliminación de E. coli de 99% para A. caroliniana, E. crassipes y Lemna sp. y de 100% para P. stratiotes y S. auriculata. Posteriormente, se realizaron ensayos con aguas negras en los cuales S. auriculata y A. caroliniana lograron el 100% de remoción de las coliformes y E. coli el resto de plantas tuvieron niveles menores de eficiencia. Se propone el uso de estas especies para el tratamiento de aguas contaminadas.

The remediation performances of heavy metals contaminaged sediment by hydrophytes including Alternanthera Philoxeroides, Canna indica L., Nymphaea tetragona, Typha orientalis, Phragmites australis, Phragmites australis, Hydrilla verticillata, Cyperus alternifolius L., Eichhornia crassipes, Acorus tatarinowii, Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop were investigated through batch pot experiments. The results showed that the enrichment effect of Pb was better in Alternanthera Philoxeroides and Acorus tatarinowii with the BCFs of 4.42 and 1.22, and the TFs of 7.84 and 4.23, respectively. The Cr enrichment effects by Nymphaea tetragona, Hydrilla verticillata and Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms were better, which BCFs were 2.69, 1.91 and 3.71, and which TFs were 7.93, 2.07 and 2.18, respectively.

Abstract Growth and biological conditions of Messastrum gracile were evaluated to compare the effect of photoautotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation on the increase of biomass production and chemical conditions cultured in macrophyte and commercial culture media. The growth rate (k) of M. gracile was different in the culture media, higher in mixotrophic cultivation for Lemna minor culture medium, whilst to Eichhornia crassipes and NPK culture media were higher in photoautotrophic cultivation. Mean lipid contents in photoautotrophic cultivation were 8.2% biomass dry weight, whereas they reached 19% biomass dry weight in mixotrophic cultivation. Protein contents were below 48% biomass dry weight in photoautotrophic cultivation and 30% biomass dry weight in mixotrophic cultivation. Messastrum gracile cultured in macrophyte culture media (E. crassipes and L. minor) and NPK culture medium provided satisfactory results with regard to lipid and protein contents in mixotrophic and photoautotrophic cultivations, respectively. Lipid and protein contents in alternative media were higher or similar to the CHU12 commercial culture medium.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la capacidad de remoción de nitrógeno (N) y fósforo (P) en Aguas Residuales Municipales (ARM), por plantas acuáticas emergentes. Se utilizaron plantas nativas de la región en los efluentes de la Planta de Recuperación de la Empresa Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado - EMAPACOP S.A. (Pucallpa, Perú), aplicando dos métodos de investigación experimental y aplicada; se evaluó la capacidad de remoción de N y P durante 5 días, a nivel laboratorio, en ARM. La Eichhornia crassipes y Lemna minor, tuvieron un buen crecimiento en ARM. El cultivo de plantas acuáticas emergentes, se realizó con 4 meses de crecimiento en condiciones controladas de luz, temperatura y pH. El cultivo de Eichhornia crassipes y Lemna minor, reportó valores altos de remoción, entre 70%-80%, y 55%-60%, respectivamente. La cantidad óptima de plantas acuáticas emergentes, para tratar aguas residuales y disminuir el exceso de nutrientes causantes de eutrofización o hipoxia, fue de 60 muestras para tratar 80 litros de agua cruda, con una disminución de 0,35 mg/l hasta 0,09 mg/l de nitrógeno y de 5 mg/l hasta 0,53 mg/l de fósforo.

The use of three macrophytes namely Azolla pinnata, Eichhornia crassipes and Lemna minor for the phytoremediation of emulsion paint wastewater was investigated. Samples of the paint wastewater and test plants were collected and analyzed for physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations before and after phytoremediation for six weeks. The TDS of the treated wastewater was reduced by over 80.0% by each of the test plants while the TSS increased as a result of debris from withered test plants. Dissolved oxygen reduction ranged from 12.5% to 50.0%, COD from 49.5% to 57.1%, BOD from 46.7% to 54.7, heavy metals from 11.0 to 92.5%. A. pinnata appears to have performed significantly better (P < 0.05) than the other plants followed by E. crassipies and L. minor. It can be concluded that the test plants (especially A. pinnata) can be effectively used for the preliminary treatment of paint wastewater.

Aquatic environments are often contaminated with various compounds, with potential toxicity towards aquatic organisms, which may enter the food chain. Azo dyes are used in various industries and contamination of waters has been reported. The present paper assesses the toxicity of the synthetic, water soluble Congo Red dye towards Lemna minor from a physiological and cytogenetical point of view. The dye was tested in 5-5000 ppm concentrations. Total frond surface, root growth and fresh mass reductions were registered from 5 ppm dye concentration, with a concentration-dependent response and calculated EC50 of 1530 ppm. Plant growth was completely inhibited above 2500 ppm. Dye accumulation was observed in tissues, along with necrosis formation. Chlorophyll a contents decreased, while carotenoid contents increased above 2500 ppm. Significant inhibition of PSII efficiency was recorded above 1000 ppm. Mitotic indices were decreased at 5 and 1000 ppm dye and were 0 at 5000 ppm. The number of chromosomal aberrations significantly increased at 5 and 1000 ppm dye. The growth medium was decontaminated up to 56% at 250 ppm dye concentration by Lemna plants. Congo Red azo dye presented toxicity towards Lemna minor, from a physiological and cyotgenetical point of view, especially at higher concentrations. In the same time, a phytoremediation potential of duckweed with respect to the tested dye was demonstrated.
