The main economic activity in the Jiu Valley is mining, which provides to the society an important content of mineral raw  materials required for the development and progress, representing  the main activity in producing the value chain. The majority of the  mining activities and other economic activities deployed along the  basin of the East Jiu generates both negative environmental impacts (more or less serious) and positive impacts such as those  related to employment, staff training, creating infrastructures etc. In  the most cases, the negative impacts of the human activities can  be much improved up to a point or even eliminated through the  remedial measures, particularly through environmental rehabilitation of the affected areas. But if a watercourse is strongly  affected by sediments generated by the human activity still on the  top side, the pollution will be  intensifed much more on the bottom  side with signifiant changes on the aquatic ecosystems and with an  impossibility of consumption and the use of the water resources by  the riparian population. The main objective of this paper consists of the identification and the description of all human activities  presented along the East Jiu and the analayses of the negative  influence exerted on the river water quality. To compare the water  quality of the East Jiu and monitoring its variations in time, it was  used the method water quality index (WQI), having the straight  purpose of aggregating individual indicators (expressed in physical units) in a unique water quality index.

The issues of freshwater pollutions and the high demand of clean freshwater for daily human activities have forced developing countries such as Malaysia to continuously monitor the quality of the freshwater. The present study objective is to present the trend of water quality status in the Kelantan River downstream, Peninsular Malaysia from 2005 to 2018. Water samples were collected during dry and monsoon seasons from a sampling station located at downstream of the Kelantan River. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) were measured in situ while other parameters were analysed in the laboratory based on retrieved water samples. Water quality status was determined based on National Water Quality Standard (NWQS) for River in Malaysia by calculating the water quality index (WQI) according to the concentration of six water quality parameters involving pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (TSS) and Ammonia Nitrogen (AN). The results showed that Kelantan River had good water quality during the dry season classified in Class II at 2005. The water quality was found to be slightly lower during the monsoon season in year 2006. In addition, increasing the number of construction, human activities in the land use areas, land use changes and the sewage water from domestic, industrial, wet market and food outlets in the Kelantan State have declined the water quality in Kelantan River from Class II (in 2005) to Class III (in 2010 and 2011) and to become Class IV in 2017 to 2018. The results of the present study are expected to give valuable information for the water managers in order to deal with better strategies in controlling the quality of freshwater at the Kelantan River and minimize the incidence of pollution-oriented problems, thus the water can be utilized for various water uses with appropriate quality.

Small water bodies ranging in size from 1 to 50,000 m2, are numerous, widely distributed, and have various functions in water storage, agriculture, and fisheries. Small water bodies used for agriculture and fisheries are economically significant in China, hence it is important to properly identify and analyze them. In remote sensing technology, water body identification based on band analysis, image classification, and water indices are often designed for large, homogenous water bodies. Traditional water indices are often less accurate for small water bodies, which often contain submerged or floating plants or easily confused with hill shade. Water quality inversion commonly depends on establishing the relationship between the concentration of water constituents and the observed spectral reflectance. However, individual variation in water quality in small water bodies is enormous and often far beyond the range of existing water quality inversion models. In this study, we propose a method for small water body identification and water quality estimation and test its applicability in Wuhan. The kappa coefficient of small water body identification is over 0.95, and the coefficient of determination of the water quality inversion model is over 0.9. Our results show that the method proposed in this study can be employed to accurately monitor the dynamics of small water bodies. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the intensity of human activities decreased. As a response, significant changes in the water quality of small water bodies were observed. The results also suggest that the water quality of small water bodies under different production modes (intensive/casual) respond differently in spatial and temporal dimensions to the decrease in human activities. These results illustrate that effective remote sensing monitoring of small water bodies can provide valuable information on water quality.

AbstrakSungai Cisadane memiliki multifungsi untuk kebutuhan pertanian, rumah tangga dan industri. Namun, kegiatan manusia di Daerah Aliran Sungai/DAS Cisadane dan di Sungai Cisadane dapat mengancam fungsi dan nilai ekosistem S.Cisadane. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keanakeragaman makrozoobentos sebagai indikator kualitas air S.Cisadane. Penelitian dilakukan di sembilan (9) titik di sepanjang Sungai Cisadane dari hulu hingga hilir. Sampel makrozoobentos dikoleksi dengan jala surber dan Eckman Grabb. Pada musim kemarau, kekayaan taksa makrozoobentos terendah di bagian tengah dan hilir hilir (8 taksa) dan tertinggi di hulu (20 taksa). Kualitas air sungai ditentukan berdasarkan Indeks keanekaragaman Shannon-Wiener (H’). Kualitas air S.Cisadane yaitu baik/tercemar sangat ringan di hulu (Stasiun 1), cukup baik/tercemar ringan di hulu - tengah (Stasiun 2-5), sedang/tercemar sedang tengah mendekati hilir (Stasiun 6), dan buruk/tercemar berat di hilir (Stasiun 7-9).Kata kunci: kualitas air, makrozoobentos, Sungai CisadaneAbstractCisadane River has multifunction i.e. agriculture, domestic and industry. The aim of this research was to analysis macrozoobenthos diversity as bioindicator of Cisadane River. Nine (9) stations were designed along Cisadane River from up to downstream. Samples were collected with Surber net and Eckman Grabb. The taxa richness decreased from upstream (20 taxa) to downstream (8 taxa).Based on Shannon-Wiener (H’), the water quality of Cisadane River were classified i.e. good (Station 1), quite good/slightly polluted (Station 2-5), moderate/moderately polluted (Station 6), and not good/ heavily polluted (Station 7-9).Keywords: Cisadane River, water quality, macrozoobenthos

Water quality is becoming a global problem in developed and underdeveloped countries. Human activities directly or indirectly affect quality of water and pollute the water; the demand for fresh water is increasing faster. Therefore, in the present investigation attempt has been made to asses chemical parameters of Valwan dam water. Obtained values were compared with two standards of WHO and BIS. Parameters such as pH, Alkalinity, TDS, Total Hardness, CO2, dissolved oxygen, phosphate were found with permissible limits of BIS and WHO which indicates this water body is suitable for drinking purpose.
