Abstract Purpose of Review The role of autoantibodies in arrhythmogenesis has been the subject of research in recent times. This review focuses on the rapidly expanding field of autoantibody-mediated cardiac arrhythmias. Recent Findings Since the discovery of cardiac autoantibodies more than three decades ago, a great deal of effort has been devoted to understanding their contribution to arrhythmias. Different cardiac receptors and ion channels were identified as targets for autoantibodies, the binding of which either initiates a signaling cascade or serves as a biomarker of underlying remodeling process. Consequently, the wide spectrum of heart rhythm disturbances may emerge, ranging from atrial to ventricular arrhythmias as well as conduction diseases, irrespective of concomitant structural heart disease or manifest autoimmune disorder. Summary The time has come to acknowledge autoimmune cardiac arrhythmias as a distinct disease entity. Establishing the autoantibody profile of patients will help to develop novel treatment approaches for patients.

Introduction. Heart rhythm disorders in locomotive drivers are a significant disease that increases the risk of sudden death and thromboembolic complications, including during professional duties. Conditions associated with cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers can create a state for disastrous situations on the railway. Identification of risk factors for heart rhythm disorders and their prevention in locomotive drivers is an important task. The study aimed to study the role of vitamin D in developing cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers. Materials and methods. We recruited the patients in the cardiology department's conditions, JSC "Russian Railways" in Moscow. The study included patients with detected cardiac arrhythmias. We did not have patients with a history of surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias with organic myocardial diseases. Namely: ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, congenital and acquired heart defects, cardiomyopathy. Also, scientists did not study patients with somatic disorders, decompensation of chronic diseases, and endocrine and urinary systems. Results. The study revealed a widespread prevalence of low vitamin D levels among locomotive drivers with cardiac arrhythmias. The statistical analysis showed the effect of vitamin D deficiency on cardiac arrhythmias' development with a high risk of sudden death and thromboembolic complications. We revealed the negative impact of occupational stress on the development of cardiac arrhythmias in locomotive drivers. Scientists have found the relationship of vitamin D deficiency with the level of anxiety of drivers. A review of studies on the role of vitamin D deficiency in developing cardiovascular diseases, including cardiac arrhythmias, is presented. The results of the study are consistent with the data of the scientific literature. Conclusions. It is necessary to survey locomotive drivers to identify vitamin D deficiency with the subsequent correction to prevent cardiac arrhythmias.

This introduction outlines Ivan Jablonka’s theory and practice of writing the social sciences as foregrounded in three of his most noted, recent books, A History of the Grandparents I Never Had, History is a Contemorary Literature, and Laëtitia. As he outlines in his own contribution here, Jablonka advances rigorous, methodical research that nevertheless details the subjective investment of the researcher while at the same time utilizing creative “literary” techniques to engage a wide spectrum of readers well beyond the habitual circles of academic specialists. The essays contributed by Julie Fette, Sarah Fishman, Melanie Hawthorne, Don Reid, and Nathan Bracher explore various facets of Jablonka’s approach, including, respectively: writing history with family stories, resisting the erosion of factual reasoning in the Trump years, pursuing biographies of supposedly non-descript lives, appreciating the importance of Communist cultural networks in postwar France, and revisiting the role of the subject in the social sciences.

AbstractNeuromyelitis optica (NMO) was long considered a clinical variant of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the discovery of a novel and pathogenic anti-astrocytic serum autoantibody targeting aquaporin-4 (termed NMO-IgG or AQP4-Ab), the most abundant water channel protein in the central nervous system, led to the recognition of NMO as a distinct disease entity in its own right and generated strong and persisting interest in the condition. NMO is now studied as a prototypic autoimmune disorder, which differs from MS in terms of immunopathogenesis, clinicoradiological presentation, optimum treatment, and prognosis. While the history of classic MS has been extensively studied, relatively little is known about the history of NMO. In Part 1 of this series we focused on the late 19th century, when the term ‘neuromyelitis optica’ was first coined, traced the term’s origins and followed its meandering evolution throughout the 20th and into the 21st century. Here, in Part 2, we demonstrate that the peculiar concurrence of acute optic nerve and spinal cord affliction characteristic for NMO caught the attention of physicians much earlier than previously thought by re-presenting a number of very early cases of possible NMO that date back to the late 18th and early 19th century. In addition, we comprehensively discuss the pioneering concept of ‘spinal amaurosis’, which was introduced into the medical literature by ophthalmologists in the first half of the 19th century.

Membranous nephropathy (MN) occurs due to deposition of immune complexes along the subepithelial region of glomerular basement membrane. Two previously identified target antigens for the immune complexes, PLA2R (identified in 2009) and THSD7A (in 2014), account for approximately 60% of all MN, both primary and secondary. In the remaining MN, target antigens were unknown. Use of laser microdissection and mass spectrometry enabled identification of new “antigens.” This approach led to the identification of four novel types of MN: exotosin 1 (EXT1)– and exotosin 2 (EXT2)–associated MN, NELL1-associated MN, Sema3B-associated MN, and PCDH7-associated MN. Each of these represents a distinct disease entity, with different clinical and pathologic findings. In this review, the structure of the proteins and the clinical and pathologic findings of the new types of MN are discussed. The role of mass spectrometry for accurate diagnosis of MN cannot be overemphasized. Finally, any classification of MN should be made on the basis of the antigens that are detected. Further studies are required to understand the pathophysiology, response to treatment, and outcomes of these new MNs.

The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.

The subject of alignment is not new to the world of education. Today however, it has come to mean different things and to have a heuristic value in education according to research in different areas, not least for neuroscience, and to attention to skills and to the alternation framework.This paper, after looking at the classic references that already attributed an important role to alignment in education processes, looks at the strategic role of alignment in the current context, outlining the shared construction processes and focusing on some of the ways in which this is put into effect.Alignment is part of a participatory, enactive approach that gives a central role to the interaction between teaching and learning, avoiding the limits of behaviourism, which has a greater bias towards teaching, and cognitivism/constructivism, which focus their attention on learning and in any case, on that which separates a teacher preparing the environment and a student working in it.

This article addresses one of the most actively developing types of design activities – light design. The article comprises quotes of the leading Russian and foreign light design specialists published over the previous five years, as well as the authors’ own conclusions. The thoughts quoted in the article are sometimes opposite to each other and reflect the wide spectrum of professional practice. They reflect the initial opinions of analysts and experts which are often diverging. All of the specialists point at the interdisciplinary nature of the new profession, which imposes additional load on a designer overloaded enough already by the scope and speed of the problems being solved nowadays. The discussion of the new profession of light designer initiated on the pages of professional publications is especially important in view of the development of professional standards and standards of design and architectural education, as well as creation of new educational programmes based on various approaches to the subject in technical and humanitarian institutions. The goal of this article is to introduce light design into the field of fully legitimate sections of design culture, to define the authentic scientific basis of the new creative profession, to initiate a foundation for self-determination of the new synthetic area, which materially affects the state of the profession as a whole and the life standards of a wide variety of consumers. In order to reach the set goal, a comparative and analytical method of study was selected, which allows studying the problem to a large extent and from all angles and finding the ways of overcoming the challenges emerging in the area of the new activity.

The role of networks is swiftly increasing in the production and communication of scientific knowledge.
