Abstract Objectives Colorectal cancer survivors are at risks of emotional distress and dysregulated diurnal cortisol rhythms. Dispositional self-compassion has been linked with better psychological adjustment and greater positive affect. This study evaluated the associations between self-compassion and the diurnal cortisol pattern, and the role of positive affect and emotional distress in mediating this association, in cancer patients. Methods This longitudinal study recruited 127 Chinese colorectal cancer survivors, who completed assessments for self-compassion, positive affect, emotional distress, and naturalistic salivary cortisol at baseline. The participants completed follow-up assessments for affect and emotional distress after 2 months (time 2) and the diurnal cortisol pattern after 8 months (time 3). Bootstrapped mediation analysis analyzed the direct and indirect effects of self-compassion on the diurnal cortisol pattern via positive affect and emotional distress. Results A structural equation model with latent factors of self-compassion, self-criticism, and emotional distress provided an adequate fit to the data. The direct effects of self-compassion and self-criticism on the diurnal cortisol pattern were not significant (p = 0.11–0.50). Positive affect, but not emotional distress, at time 2 significantly predicted steeper diurnal cortisol slopes at time 3 (β = − 0.22, SE = 0.08, p < 0.01). Self-compassion and self-criticism showed significant negative and positive indirect effects on time 3 diurnal cortisol slopes via time 2 positive affect, respectively. Conclusions Our findings support indirect linkages between self-compassion and steeper diurnal cortisol slopes via positive affect. Positive affect may mediate temporal relationships between self-compassion and neuroendocrine functioning in colorectal cancer survivors.

Abstract. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with worry and emotion regulation difficulties. The contrast-avoidance model suggests that individuals with GAD use worry to regulate emotion: by worrying, they maintain a constant state of negative affect (NA), avoiding a feared sudden shift into NA. We tested an extension of this model to positive affect (PA). During a week-long ecological momentary assessment (EMA) period, 96 undergraduates with a GAD analog provided four daily measurements of worry, dampening (i.e., PA suppression), and PA. We hypothesized a time-lagged mediation relationship in which higher worry predicts later dampening, and dampening predicts subsequently lower PA. A lag-2 structural equation model was fit to the group-aggregated data and to each individual time-series to test this hypothesis. Although worry and PA were negatively correlated in 87 participants, our model was not supported at the nomothetic level. However, idiographically, our model was well-fit for about a third (38.5%) of participants. We then used automatic search as an idiographic exploratory procedure to detect other time-lagged relationships between these constructs. While 46 individuals exhibited some cross-lagged relationships, no clear pattern emerged across participants. An alternative hypothesis about the speed of the relationship between variables is discussed using contemporaneous correlations of worry, dampening, and PA. Findings suggest heterogeneity in the function of worry as a regulatory strategy, and the importance of temporal scale for detection of time-lagged effects.

This study focused on college students’ attitudes toward the relationship between online civic responsibility and online civic engagement and its impacts. It also investigated the mediating roles of online civic learning and online civic expression in this relationship. A survey was conducted in Taiwan, testing for indirect effects with mediated variables using a structural equation model. The study tested hypotheses about the mediations of online civic learning and online civic expression on this relationship between online civic responsibility and online civic engagement for college students. The results indicate that the mediators of online civic learning and online civic expression fully mediate the relationship between online civic responsibility and online civic engagement.

Abstract Exposures common in cancer patients––chemotherapy, surgical injury and/or anesthesia, alone or in combination with predisposing factors––have been suggested as potential risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We explored the relationship between chemotherapy and cumulative anesthesia exposure, and development of AD in colorectal cancer survivors. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals age 65 and older diagnosed with colorectal cancer between 1998 and 2013, drawing on SEER-Medicare data and employing a proportional hazards model. We found that exposure to chemotherapy in colorectal cancer survivors demonstrated a protective effect for AD HR=0.821 (0.784-0.860). The beneficial effect held in race-, sex-, cancer-stage-specific subgroups, across chemotherapy agents (e.g., Fluorouracil, Oxaliplatin, or Fluorouracil+Leucovorin), in multivariable analyses, and in propensity score-based pseudorandomization based on 70 demographic, socioeconomic, cancer-diagnosis-related, and comorbidity variables. The effect was diminished or absent when non-AD dementias were analyzed. Findings further demonstrated that the association between chemotherapy exposure and AD was not affected by competing risk of long-term mortality or possible correlation between choosing chemotherapy and higher cognitive score or use of alternative health insurance. The effect of anesthesia on AD was not significant (0.998 per hour, 0.992-1.005) and this effect held in all subgroups, multivariable analyses, and for pseudorandomized subpopulations. Harmful effect was detected for cerebral degeneration, excluding AD, cognitive deficits following cerebral hemorrhage, cognitive disorder due to injury, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatolenticular degeneration. Sensitivity analyses focused on SEER-Registry-specific effects and possible misspecifications in anesthesia records with alternative models demonstrated stability of estimates.

This paper presents and discusses a structural equation model on hydrogen acceptance. This model unravels the direct and indirect effects among personal characteristics, knowledge about hydrogen, perceptions, attitudes, and willingness to use hydrogen applications. In addition, indicators of differently colored information that can be provided by mass media have been included as explanatory variables. The estimated model indicates that colored information directly influences perceptions of hydrogen and indirectly influences attitudes about hydrogen and willingness to use it. In particular, negatively colored information decreases hydrogen acceptance, which cannot be counterbalanced by providing positively colored information. Furthermore, the model suggests that more factual knowledge about hydrogen increases its acceptance. The paper further discusses the likely development of hydrogen acceptance in the future and how practitioners can influence this.
