Lay SummaryRecently, the use of the human amniotic membrane (hAM) has been extended to treat retinal disorders such as refractory macular holes, retinal breaks and dry and wet age-related macular degeneration. Not only the hAM has proved to be an excellent tool for repairing retinal tissue, but it has also shown a promising regeneration potential. This review aims to highlight the novel use of the hAM in treating retinal diseases. Although the hAM has been used in the ocular anterior segment reconstruction for more than 60 years, in the last 2 years, we have found in literature articles showing the use of the hAM in the retinal surgery field with interesting results in terms of tissue healing and photoreceptor regeneration.

Recently, the use of the human amniotic membrane (hAM) has been extended to treat retinal disorders, such as macular holes that failed to close and retinal tears. The hAM has demonstrated the induction of a recovery process of the external retinal layers involving the external limiting membrane (ELM) and the ellipsoid zone (EZ). After that, the application of the hAM for retinal pathologies was extended to large macular tears, high myopic retinal detachment associated with MH, paravascular tears, serous macular detachment associated with optic pit, complicated retinal detachment and advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The hAM has shown a potential in repairing retinal tissue through a regeneration process. This review aims to highlight the use of the hAM in various vitreo-retinal surgical fields, and to confront it with other cutting-edge surgical techniques used to treat challenging vitreo-retinal pathologies.

Accidental intraocular lens (IOL) implantation into the corneal stroma is a rare clinical entity that can occur during the wound-assisted technique. In this report, we describe a case of an 81-year-old man who underwent cataract surgery in which the IOL was implanted into the corneal stroma with the wound-assisted technique, and we present changes in anterior segment optical coherence tomography. The IOL was removed and reinserted after widening the incision. Air tamponade was created by intracameral injection. An anterior chamber tap was performed 10 h later to reduce increased intraocular pressure. Interlayer separation of the corneal stroma was confirmed 30 min postoperatively but was corrected 4 days later. The patient’s best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was logMAR 0.30, and he had been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration before surgery. Although the opacity of the corneal stroma persisted, BCVA improved to logMAR 0. When using the wound-assisted technique for IOL insertion, surgeons should take care not to implant the IOL into the corneal stroma.

With the advancement of computational power, refinement of learning algorithms and architectures, and availability of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) technology, particularly with machine learning and deep learning, is paving the way for ‘intelligent’ healthcare systems. AI-related research in ophthalmology previously focused on the screening and diagnosis of posterior segment diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. There is now emerging evidence demonstrating the application of AI to the diagnosis and management of a variety of anterior segment conditions. In this review, we provide an overview of AI applications to the anterior segment addressing keratoconus, infectious keratitis, refractive surgery, corneal transplant, adult and paediatric cataracts, angle-closure glaucoma and iris tumour, and highlight important clinical considerations for adoption of AI technologies, potential integration with telemedicine and future directions.

The focus of this research is the investigation of the Ocular Surface Temperature (OST) in both healthy and pathological (e.g. age-related macular degeneration, eye dry syndrome and choroidal lesions) eyes by using Infrared Thermography (IR). Specifically, the temperature of different anatomical areas (or points) of the eye is measured by applying image processing procedures on the infrared images recorded. It is known that the pathogenesis of some ocular pathology is related to the variation of ocular blood perfusion, and thus to the temperatures of the anterior segment of the eye. Results demonstrated that thermography can provide quantitative documentation of these temperature measurements. Furthermore, thermography is a non-invasive, cheap, harmless and portable technique. The challenge is to make ocular thermography part of the daily diagnostic procedure by providing more and more reliable experimental data.

Background: Vision screening can help discover some problems hitherto unknown to the patient but it is also a fact that many other disease conditions may also be missed during screening depending on the qualification and skill of those carrying out the test and the available instruments for screening. Eye diseases differ from country to country and even within the same country from community to community and knoweledge of the disease pattern in a given environment is critical for planning of appropraite intervention programs.Methods: Free eye health intervention program was carried out and patients were inially screened by optometrists and ophthalmic nurses for cataract, presbyopia and other minor ophthalmic problems. Patients that had other problems including complicated cataract were referred for further consultation with the ophthalmologists in the field..Results: Of the 547 who were further screened by the ophthalmologists in the field 243 (44.4%) were males and 304 (55.6%) were females with male to female ratio of 1: 1.25. The age range was 1-87 years. The mean(SD) age was 51.27years, median 53years, and mode was 60 years. Cataract and its related problem was the commonest condition139(25.4%), followed by glaucoma 78(14.3%). Age related macular degeneration(AMD) was the commonest posterior segment finding 27(4.9%)  while corneal opacity 11(2.0%) was the commonest anterior segment finding and 19(3.5%) were bilaterally blind.Conclusions: The eye health indices of the people as shown by the disease prevalence and the number of those bilaterally blind are still very poor.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to examine the efficacy of macular hole repair in eyes with coexisting dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of charts of 25 patients (27 eyes) diagnosed with mild to moderate dry AMD who underwent macular hole repair via 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy between 2014 and 2016. Data of interest included anatomic failure rates, complication rates, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) preoperatively, and at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months postoperatively. When available, data at each patient’s most recent visit were also analyzed. Results: Macular hole repair resulted in a statistically significant ( P < .05) visual improvement postoperatively, with BCVA increasing from 20/141 preoperatively to 20/33 1 year postoperatively. Mean BCVA at most recent visit was 20/41. Mean duration of follow-up was 13 months (range, 1-39 months). One of 27 (3.7%) macular holes failed to close after vitrectomy. One of 27 eyes (3.7%) progressed from dry to wet AMD. Four of 27 additional eyes (18.5%) were noted to have worsening of their AMD on exam over the course of follow-up. Conclusions: Macular hole repair in patients with coexisting dry AMD leads to a significant improvement in visual performance and has a low risk of failure or complication.
