Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) of distributed optical fiber sensor is extracted from the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS), which is often characterized by Lorenz type. However, in the case of complex stress and optical fiber self damage, the BGS will deviate from Lorenz type and be asymmetric, which leads to the extraction error of BFS. In order to enhance the extraction accuracy of BFS, the Lorenz local single peak fitting algorithm was developed to fit the Brillouin gain spectrum curve, which can make the BSG symmetrical with respect to the Brillouin center frequency shift. One temperature test of a fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) packaged sensor whose BSG curve is asymmetric was conducted to verify the idea. The results show that the local region curve of BSG processed by the developed algorithm has good symmetry, and the temperature measurement accuracy obtained by the developed algorithm is higher than that directly measured by demodulation equipment. Comparison with the reference temperature, the relative measurement error measured by the developed algorithm and BOTDA are within 4% and 8%, respectively.

Soil roughness is one of the most challenging issues in the agricultural domain and plays a crucial role in soil quality. The objective of this research was to develop a computerized method based on stereo vision technique to estimate the roughness formed on the agricultural soils. Additionally, soil till quality was investigated by analyzing the height of plow layers. An image dataset was provided in the real conditions of the field. For determining the soil surface roughness, the elevation of clods obtained from tillage operations was computed using a depth map. This map was obtained by extracting and matching corresponding keypoints as super pixels of images. Regression equations and coefficients of determination between the measured and estimated values indicate that the proposed method has a strong potential for the estimation of soil shallow roughness as an important physical parameter in tillage operations. In addition, peak fitting of tilled layers was applied to the height profile to evaluate the till quality. The results of this suggest that the peak fitting is an effective method of judging tillage quality in the fields.

<p>In this paper we present weight measurements of urban heavy traffic comparing two different Weigh In Motion (WIM) systems. One is a WIM-ROAD system using Lineas quartz pressure sensors in the road surface. The other is a WIM-BRIDGE system using optical fibre-based strain sensors which are applied under the bridge to the bottom fibre of a single span of the bridge deck. We have designed our tests to determine which system is most suited to Amsterdam. We put special focus on the accuracy that each system can achieve and have set up an extensive calibration program to determine this. Our ultimate goal is to draw up a realistic traffic load model for Amsterdam. This model would lead to a recommendation that can be used to re- examine the structural safety of existing historic bridges and quay walls, in addition to the current traffic load recommendations.</p>

When the Micro Inertial Measurement Unit is been placed randomly in the case of stationary, the sum vectors that measured by the inertial devices configured orthogonally along three axis, are constant vectors. In view of the above objective facts, a field calibration method of micro inertial measurement unit was proposed. On the base of the establishment and optimization of calibration model, all parameters to be calibrated can be obtained through the least square by the ellipsoid fitting, with the result of high-precision field calibration for micro inertial measurement unit. Finally, a filed calibration program for micro inertial measurement unit is scheduled reasonably. The experiment results show that the method has such characteristics such as easily-operation, time-saving, higher calibration accuracy, and not depending on the baseline direction and datum offered by precision instruments. Especially, it fits for inertial measurement systems which work short time and ask for high accuracy. In addition, it can also significantly increase the measurement accuracy of micro inertial measurement system in practical application.

Abstract We have modified the software of Sauter and Dorman (1986) to produce a robust and flexible calibration program that works in the frequency domain for longer and noisy calibration signals, as well as in the time domain when shorter, high signal-to-noise calibration signals may be used. The most important improvement was to replace the least squares fitting of the complex polynomial representation of the response function with the simplex fitting of the pole-zero representation of the response function. The simplex algorithm always converges to a minimum, regardless of starting model, and by fitting the poles and zeroes directly, we minimize the degrees of freedom of the solution. Typical VAX 11/750 CPU requirements are on the order of 2 to 3 minutes for both codes, with average errors less than 1 per cent in amplitude and 1° in phase.
