Food consumption in alloxan diabetic rats shows a positive correlation with (1) alkaline phosphatase activity, (2) blood glucose level, (3) body weight, similar to the correlation between enzyme activity and food intake in normal adult rats when they are fed a stock laboratory diet. Oral vitamin B12 has no effect on serum alkaline phosphatase levels of normal or diabetic rats, nor does it modify the effect of supplementary methionine in either group. The effect of supplementary choline on the phosphatase of normal rats is unaltered by this vitamin which is reported to have transmethylating and lipotropic influences. Methionine added to animal checkers lowers phosphatase levels in both normal and diabetic adult rats, but this is directly related to lowered food consumption which always accompanies supplementation with this amino acid. The animals maintain their weights and appear to be in good condition, so it may be assumed that the lowered intake of food is adequate. Supplementary choline decreases phosphatase levels of normal rats by about 20% of initial values, and this appears to be due to choline itself and not to altered food consumption. Phosphatase levels of alloxan diabetic rats, however, are slightly but significantly elevated by supplementary choline.

There is no correlation in either weanling or adult normal male rats between daily food consumption of a stock laboratory diet and serum tributyrinase activity. Limiting the food intake of adult male rats has no statistically significant effects on serum tributyrinase. The abnormally elevated serum tributyrinase levels of alloxan diabetic adult male rats may be accounted for on the basis of increased food consumption. Weanling and adult male animals maintained on synthetic diets containing from 5 to 60% fat show a correlation between serum tributyrinase concentration and daily fat consumption. In the case of adult rats increased fat ingestion is accompanied by increased enzyme activity. However, with weanling rats increased fat consumption results in lowered tributyrinase concentrations and retarded growth. The results with growing animals are attributed to the decreased intake of food, and the corresponding decrease in protein consumption, which accompanies the increase in dietary fat concentration. Replacement of the synthetic diets by the stock laboratory diet is followed by altered tributyrinase levels in both weanling and adult animals.

The fine structure of the Harderian gland has been described in some animal species (hamster, rabbit, mouse, domestic fowl and albino rats). There are only two reports in the literature dealing on the ultrastructure of rat Harderian gland in adult animals. In one of them the author describes the myoepithelial cells in methacrylate-embbeded tissue, and the other deals with the maturation of the acinar cells and the formation of the secretory droplets. The aim of the present work is to analize the relationships among the acinar cell components and to describe the two types of cells located at the perifery of the acini.

An 11mm length of sciatic nerve was removed from 10 anesthetized adult rats and replaced by a biodegradable polyester Vicryl™ mesh sleeve which was then injected with the basement membrane gel, Matrigel™. It was noted that leg sensation and movement were much improved after 30 to 45 days and upon sacrifice nerve reconnection was noted in all animals. Epoxy sections of the repaired nerves were compared with those of the excised segments by the use of a variation of the PAS reaction, the PATS reaction, developed in our laboratories for light and electron microscopy. This microwave-accelerated technique employs periodic acid, thiocarbohydrazide and silver methenamine. It stains basement membrane or Type IV collagen brown and type III collagen (reticulin), axons, Schwann cells, endoneurium and perineurium black. Epoxy sections of repaired and excised nerves were also compared by toluidine blue (tb) staining. Comparison of the sections of control and repaired nerves was done by computer-assisted microscopic image analysis using an Olympus CUE-2 Image Analysis System.

Whiskers or vibrissal follicle-sinus complexes (F-SCs) on the snouts of many mammalian species are structures that have complex, dense sensory innervation. The innervation of F-SCs is remarkably similar in all species with the exception of one site - the inner conical body (ICB). The ICB is an elongated cylindrical structure that encircles the hair shaft near the neck of the follicle. This site has received only cursory attention in ultrastructural studies of the F-SCAdult rats were perfused after the method of Renehan and Munger2. F-SCs were quartered longitudinally and embedded separately in Epon-Araldite. Serial 0.25 μm sections were cut in either the longitudinal or perpendicular plane through the ICB and examined with an AEI EM7 1.2 MV HVEM (Albany, NY) at 1000 KV. Sensory endings were reconstructed from serial micrographs through at least 20 μm in the longitudinal plane and through 10 μm in the perpendicular plane.From two to six small superficial vibrissal nerves converge upon the neck of the F-SC and descend into the ICB. The nerves branch into smaller bundles of myelinated and unmyelinated axons along the dorsal side of the hair shaft.

A study was conducted on the influence of maternal education level on food consumption, energy and nutrient intake, and dietary adequacy in 110 pre-school children from Madrid, Spain. With increasing maternal education, children consumed more sugar (p < 0.05), fruit (p < 0.05), and fish (p < 0.05). Snacking was more frequent with decreasing maternal education (p < 0.05). Though statistical significance was not reached, the consumption of pre-cooked foods was greater among children of mothers educated to a higher level, a phenomenon probably related to the work situation of these women. With respect to dietary composition, no significant differences were found between groups for macronutrient, fiber and energy intakes, except for energy supplied by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which was greater in the children of less educated women (p < 0.01). This is probably due to their greater consumption of sunflower seed oil. The diets of children belonging to well-educated mothers came closer to meeting the recommended intakes for folate, vitamin C, and iodine. It would seem that maternal educational level influences the food habits of children. Mothers with less education may require special advice in this area.

Nelson and Morrison (2005 , study 3) reported that men who feel hungry preferred heavier women. The present study replicates these results by using real photographs of women and examines the mediation effect of hunger scores. Men were solicited while entering or leaving a restaurant and asked to report their hunger on a 10-point scale. Afterwards, they were presented with three photographs of a woman in a bikini: One with a slim body type, one with a slender body type, and one with a slightly chubby body. The participants were asked to indicate their preference. Results showed that the participants entering the restaurant preferred the chubby body type more while satiated men preferred the thinner or slender body types. It was also found that the relation between experimental conditions and the choices of the body type was mediated by men’s hunger scores.
