Micro-turbomachinery demands gas bearings to ensure compactness, light weight, and extreme temperature operation. Gas bearings with large stiffness and damping, and preferably of low cost, will enable successful commercial applications. Presently, tests conducted on a small rotor supported on flexure pivot hydrostatic pad gas bearings (FPTPBs) demonstrate stable rotordynamic responses up to 100,000rpm (limit of the drive motor). Test rotor responses show the feed pressure raises the system critical speed (increase in bearing direct stiffness) while the viscous damping ratio decreases. Predictions correlate favorably with experimentally identified (synchronous) direct stiffness bearing force coefficients. Identified experimental gas bearing synchronous damping coefficients are 50% or less of the predicted magnitudes, though remaining relatively constant as the rotor speed increases. Tests without feed pressure show the rotor becomes unstable at ∼81krpm with a whirl frequency ratio of 20%. FPTPBs are mechanically complex and more expensive than cylindrical plain bearings. However, their enhanced stability characteristics and predictable rotordynamic performance makes them desirable for the envisioned oil-free applications in high speed micro-turbomachinery.

Demands of glass Fresnel lens is increasing in solar panel in order to increase power efficiency. Glass lens is usually molded by glass molding method with tungsten carbide molds. In this study, large Fresnel lens molds made of tungsten carbide are tested to be ground by simultaneous 2-axis (Y, Z) controlled grinding method. The resinoid bonded diamond wheel was trued with a rare metal truer to improve the sharpness of the wheel edge. In the grinding test of the tungsten carbide mold, a form accuracy of less than 0.8 μm P-V and surface roughness of 18 nm Rz were obtained, and it is clarified that the proposed grinding method is useful for the Fresnel grinding.

As one of the modern manufacture technology, high-speed precision grinding takes an important part in the modern manufacture field. With the development of the technology on high-speed spindle unit, linear precision high-speed feed unit, manufacture of grinding wheel, measurement etc, a great deal of research achievements make it possible for high-speed precision grinding. In this paper, using PMAC (Programmable Multi-Axis Controller)—PC as the central controller, a new kind of high-speed precision grinder is designed and manufactured. The servo control technology of linear motor is investigated. The dynamic performances of the machine are analyzed according to the experimental results. Elliptical workpieces have been machined with this new high-speed precision grinder. Based on these research results, a very helpful approach is provided for the precision grinding of complicated workpieces, and these results promote the development of high speed grinding too.

A novel principle of cup wheel grinding of rotating concave quadric surface was proposed. The mathematical model of machining process was established to prove the feasibility of precision grinding of rotating concave paraboloid based on the introduced principle. The conditions of non-interference grinding of concave paraboloid were mathematically derived. The processing range and its influence factors were discussed. The trajectory equation of abrasive particle was concluded. Finally, the math expressions of numerical controlled parameters was put forward in the process of grinding of the concave paraboloid.

This paper analyses the stabilityof an externally pressurized gas bearing (EPB) in a series-parallel arrangement. This mixed con. guration is an alternative to the rigidly mounted single bearing with no external damping, yielding, as one extreme, a high stiffness, but a low whirl threshold speed. The other extreme is a series bearing arrangement with a full-length externally pressurized sleeve between the journal and the housing, yielding a lower stiffness but a higher whirl threshold speed. The paper shows that a mixed con. guration allows for an increase in whirl threshold speed above that for an equivalent rigidly mounted single bearing but below that for a series arrangement. However, the mixed con. guration is stiffer than the series arrangement.
