Enlargement and/or upgrading of already existing sewage treatment plants will bring problems to design and operation. However, this can be solved even in some complicated configuration of the treatment system, as will be demonstrated. Having an activated sludge system for BOD removal (first stage) followed by a trickling filter for nitrification (second stage), denitrification of the effluent without an external H donator is hard to achieve. In domestic sewage treatment, denitrification is usually carried out with BOD as carbon source. Additionally to the principal question of pre- or post denitrification and the related effects on the effluent quality (BOD, COD, NH4) pre-denitrification in the given case would be highly ineffective and uneconomical (large hydraulic loads). The paper presents a system using thickened sludge from the activated sludge sedimentation as H donator. The sludge has been successfully used to denitrify the trickling filter effluent. For the design of the post-denitrification stage, the necessary volume of sludge could be determined together with the volume of the denitrification reactor. Results of the pilot-plant studies are presented.

Since the method of performing displacement measurement and stress assessment of material by non-contact comes to capture the spotlight, study of the digital image correlation method which adopted the pattern-matching method for asking for displacement by deformation of a surface speckle pattern has been advanced. When the configuration for an analysis was settled in the rectangle and the square region, the whole-field mesh generation was also possible, but when it became a complicated configuration, the background etc. entered and mesh generation was affected. In order to solve such a problem, even if the object for an analysis was a complicated configuration, it aimed at generating a mesh automatically and obtaining appropriate analysis output in the displacement analysis and stress analysis using the generated mesh. In addition, the validity of the result was verified by the comparison with the finite element method. By this study, the convenience and availability of the digital image correlation method was improved remarkably, and it became clear to become a leading tool in health monitoring.

Hydrodynamic performance of coaxial contra-rotating propeller (CCRP) for large ships This paper describes a coaxial contra-rotating propeller (CCRP) system to calculate the hydrodynamic characteristics and then obtain the optimum operational condition to install on two different large bulk carrier and VLCC. The method is based on boundary element method (BEM) to obtain the hydrodynamic performance of any complicated configuration such as CRP system, and then the optimum propeller data is obtained by the systematical method at the design condition. We prepared a software package code, namely SPD (Ship Propeller Design), which has model mesh generation, solver and numerical output results. The comparison of the propulsive performance was made between the propeller alone and CRP arrangement. Major finding include good agreement between predictions using the numerical code and experimental data for both ships.

A hemagglutination-inhibitory mucoprotein from human urine has been studied with the electron microscope. It consists of filaments, with diameters of 40 to > 240 A, composed of smaller fibrils. In the two-dimensional projection of the electron micrographs, the single fibrils often show a zig-zag course with a periodicity of 100 to 140 A; the single branch of a zig-zag measures about 60 A in length and either 20 or 40 A in width. Still thinner fibrillar elements are observable with diameters of 10 A or less. In three-dimensional aspect, the zig-zag structure might be a helix. The fibril-bundle (or filament) reveals a complicated configuration. Heat treatment at 70°C shows some indication of denaturation (e.g. filaments are shorter), whereas at 80°C almost complete degradation of the protein into individual zig-zag elements or smaller pieces is attained. The interaction between influenza virus particles and inhibitory mucoprotein consists of the attachment of a fiber molecule to the virus projections at several sites and frequently on more than one virus particle.

Since the complicated configuration and nonlinear nature of the internal combustion engine (ICE/engine), it’s difficult to modeling with dynamic characteristic. Aimed to this problem, a method which associates testing data with control theory for engine is presented. For the engine output is always link up generator in the hybrid electric drive vehicle, the work looks them as a whole and establishes the simulation model of engine-generator based on BP neural network and inertia element. The approach of how to computer parameters are introduced detailed. The simulation and experiment results indicated that the model’s performance data is consistent with the actual engine-generator very well.

The paper studies the failure of the 3-D complicated configuration composite turbine blade by applying failure criterion. This failure criterion considers three kinds of different failures. They are matrix tensile/compressive failure, fiber- matrix shear failure and fiber failure. By Using FEA software ABAQUS, the stiffness degradation and failure behavior of the turbine blade of composite structure were studied. The failure and stiffness degradation of the two analysis models were conducted by typical numerical examples as well.
