The aim of this study was to evaluate fresh dandelion leaves on  turkey performance. The study used a complete randomized design of 4 treatments and 6 replications. A total number of 24 turkeys (Meleagris gallapavo)-12 week-old were used in this 5 weeks of feed trial. The experimental animals were fed with the diet containing  37% of commercial broiler starter diet, 40% rice bran and forage (water hyacinth and fresh dandelion leaves).  The treatments with fresh dandelion leaves addition were P0: 0%, P1: 5%, P2: 10%, and P3: 15%. The variables observed were bio active compound in dandelion leaves, daily behavior and turkey performance.  Data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the significant differences between treatments were analyzed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that dandelion leaves contain flavonoids, tannins, saponins and steroids, vitamin D were 17.37 ppm and antioxidants IC50 have an antioxidant activity with a value of 102.31. Observation of daily behavior showed that turkeys behavior was dominated by eating and resting activities, where the highest frequency of resting activities was 0.43 per second (P0). Turkey performance were not significantly different on feed consumption, carcass weight, carcass percentage for all treatments but  significantly different  (p<0.05) on  average daily gain (AVG) and feed conversion ratio. Therefore it can be concluded that fresh dendelion leaves are able to used up to 15% in turkey diet. AbstractTaraxacum officinale F.H. Wigg (Asteraceae) root is traditionally used to treat diabetes, dyspepsia, heartburn, anorexia and hepatitis. In this work, petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and aqueous extracts of T. officinale root were evaluated for their antidiabetic activity in normoglycemic and alloxan-induced diabetic mice at two concentrations (200 and 400 mg/kg) using antidiabetic and subcutaneous glucose tolerance tests. Herein, in vitro glucose uptake assay was performed using HepG2 and 2-NDBG, while LC-MS/MS was employed for the phytochemical study of the main active constituents in the active extract. In the experiments, T. officinale root aqueous extract (400 mg/kg) showed a significant decrement in blood glucose level (62.33%, p ≤0.05), while other extracts (p >0.05) showed insignificant activity – in alloxan-induced diabetic mice with no apparent effect on the normoglycemic model. The extracts also showed an insignificant reduction in glucose levels (p >0.05) in the subcutaneous glucose tolerance test. However, a significant glucose uptake enhancement (149.6724%, p ≤0.05) was exhibited by the aqueous extract. Phytochemical study of the aqueous extract showed higher total phenolic than total flavonoid content, in which chlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid, and luteolin-7-glucoside were identified.

Background: Momordica charantia Linn. (Cucurbitaceae), the wild variety of bitter melon and Morinda lucida Benth (Rubiaceae) were commonly used as a popular folk medicine in Benin. This research focused to measure the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects of M. charantia and M. lucida leaves and their antidiabetic activity. Methods: Antioxidant activities were evaluated by micro-dilution technique using DPPH free radical scavenging activity and β-carotene-linoleate bleaching assay. The α-amylase inhibition assay was carried out utilizing the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid procedure, while β-glucosidase inhibition assay was demonstrated using as substrate p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (PNPG). HPLC-DAD analysis was realized using a high-performance liquid chromatography systems with diode-array detector, L-3000. Results: Chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, daidzein, rutin, naringin, quercetin, naringenin and genistein were identified as polyphenol compounds in the both plants extract. Dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts showed a good α-amylase inhibitory activity (56.46 ± 1.96% and 58.76 ± 2.74% respectively). M. lucida methanolic extract has shown IC50 of 0.51 ± 0.01 mg/mL, which is the lowest for DPPH scavenging activity. M. lucida dichloromethane extract showed the highest inhibitory capacity of β-glucosidase activity (82.11. ± 2.15%). Conclusion: These results justify some traditional medicinal uses of both plants. The purified fractions could be used in future formulations, possibly incorporated in functional foods to combat certain diseases.
