This paper is a review of current research on applications of control systems and theory to achieve energy conservation in automotive vehicles. The development of internal combustion engine control systems that modulate fuel flow, air flow, ignition timing and duration, and exhaust gas recirculation is discussed. The relative advantages of physical and empirical models for engine performance are reviewed. Control strategies presented include optimized open-loop schedule type systems, closed-loop feedback systems, and adaptive controllers. The development of power train and hybrid vehicle control systems is presented, including controllers for both conventional transmissions and those employing flywheel energy storage.

Student access to laboratory experiments is critical in undergraduate engineering courses since it integrates theory and practice. The access of students to such practical examples helps them to understand and apply what is learned. However, due to rapid technological advancement, educational kits can quickly become obsolete. Besides, there are many known commercial platforms for training.Many of them have steep prices, which makes their availability dicult for every student. The present work proposes a low-cost ATMEGA-based system as the main device for an educational tool for training Control System Theory. The system enables the students to test dierent control strategies through the use of a simple educational kit.


The focus of algorithmic design is to solve composite problems. Intelligent systems use intellectual concepts like evolutionary computation, artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems, and swarm intelligence to process natural intelligence models. Artificial intelligence is used as a part of intelligent systems to perform logic- and case-based reasoning. Systems like mechanical and electrical support systems are operated by utilizing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. These systems cannot accomplish their purpose, provided the control system deals with the reliability of it. In CPSs, dimensions of physical processes are taken by sensors and are processed in cyber subsystems to drive the actuators that affect the physical processors. CPSs are closed-loop systems. The adaptation and the prediction are the properties to be followed by the control strategies that are implemented in cyber subsystems. This chapter explores cyber physical control systems.

Over the past seventy years many advances have been made in the field of ship control. Early developments by Sperry and Minorsky on proportional controllers have led to today's modern control systems which have interfacing capabilities with position fixing equipment.This paper presents a brief historical summary of the methods employed in ship control from early proportional devices through the range of adaptive systems and concludes with details of a possible future control method known as intelligent control.Intelligent control consists of three methodologies: expert, fuzzy and neural. An investigation and comparison of the methodologies will present possible future control strategies.

One of the elements of implemented in Poland traffic control systems is module of priorities for public transport. Essence of working priority and the basic indicators of its effectiveness were presented. Among methods for testing the effectiveness of the priority, there has been distinguished economic and simulation approach. An example of priority research based on simulation of chosen street in Bydgoszcz was shown, using Vissim simulation environment. Developed simulation model, its connection to the control system, adopted detection system and 4 tested control strategies were also described. Then, the simulation and its results were presented. In results discussion they were compared in terms of adopted control strategies. In summary, possibility of a future study extension was also indicated.
