AbstractThe behaviour of bathypelagic perch fry (BPF) was monitored during 21 May, 24 June, 8 August and 5 September 1996 along the longitudinal profile of Římov reservoir (Czech Republic), using acoustic methods (SIMRAD EY 500 echosounder, elliptical split-beam transducer, Sonar5 postprocessing software). In May, the BPF layer comprised a mass of solitary perch larvae at an abundance of over 31,000 ind. ha−1. In contrast, in June, the BPF layer consisted almost exclusively of shoaling individuals. The abundance of BPF increased up to 166,000 ind. ha−1. Similary, in August, fish in shoals prevailed in the BPF layer but the abundance dropped to less than 3,000 ind. ha−1. In September, the BPF layer consisted of both individuals and small groups of fish. At this time the abundance of BPF slightly increased to almost 5,000 ind. ha−1. Individual parameters describing the BPF layer, depth of the main layer, abundance of BPF in the main layer and thickness of the whole layer, differed significantly among months. The negligible abundance of potential predators below the thermocline, both in June and in August (exclusively adult perch), suggests that the BPF shoals were more likely to be created as a result of a social need rather than as a defense against predators. During similar surveys carried out prior to (25 April, 5 May, 7 May, 12 May, 15 May) and after this period (3 October, 7 November, 2 December), the BPF layer was not recorded.

The in vivo fluorescence of chlorophyll a was measured in samples of natural phytoplankton taken from the Římov Reservoir (Czech Republic) during the years 1987 and 1988. The fluorescence intensities of samples either with or without addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron, DCMU) were found reliable for calculating the concentration of chlorophyll a during periods when cyanobacteria were not abundant. The correction for background non-chlorophyll fluorescence appeared to be essential. No distinct correlation between a DCMU-induced increase of the fluorescence and primary production of phytoplankton was found.

AbstractThe excavation of a tunnel by I’Energie Ouest Suisse (EOS) presented inter alia the opportunity to construct a longitudinal profile of the glacier speed and also to observe the speed of the transverse contraction of a circular section. The swift change of shape without fracture was noteworthy. A second tunnel driven from the glacier snout straight up the subglacial stream gave the opportunity to establish a definite connection between the form of the glacier sole and its surface. Finally, measurements of the glacier speeds on the surface and their variations from year to year gave a closer indication of the nature of Forbes’s bands.

Since the development of the 5-point verbal and 11-point numerical scales for measuring noise annoyance by the ICBEN Team 6, these scales have been widely used in socio-acoustic surveys worldwide, and annoyance responses have been easily compared internationally. However, both the top two categories of the 5–point verbal scale and the top three ones of the 11-point numerical scale are correspond to high annoyance, so it is difficult to precisely compare annoyance responses. Therefore, we calculated differences in day–evening–night-weighted sound pressure levels (Lden) by comparing values corresponding to 10% highly annoyed (HA) on Lden_%HA curves obtained from measurements in 40 datasets regarding surveys conducted in Japan and Vietnam. The results showed that the Lden value corresponding to 10% HA using the 5-point verbal scale was approximately 5 dB lower than that of the 11-point numerical scale. Thus, some correction is required to compare annoyance responses measured by the 5-point verbal and the 11-point numerical scales. The results of this study were also compared with those of a survey in Switzerland.

Abstract Anguillid leptocephali of three Congridae species (Conger conger, Ariosoma balearicum and Gnathophis mistax) were caught as bycatch of pelagic trawls during acoustic surveys targeting small pelagic fish species in the southern Adriatic Sea, carried out under the framework of the Italian MEDIAS project (western side) and its extension in the ambit of the FAO AdriaMed project (eastern side). Results refer to the findings of Congridae leptocephali during surveys conducted in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016. A total of 25 specimens were caught and analysed (morphological features and pigmentation patterns). Leptocephali of Conger conger were found in the range of 8.4–13.1 cm total length (TL) (between 50 and 132 m depth), Ariosoma balearicum from 9.7–12.2 cm TL (between 50 and 128 m depth) and for Gnathophis mystax in the range from 6.4–11.7 cm TL (between 40 and 79 m depth). The results indicate that the southern Adriatic Pit could be the spawning area of these species in the Adriatic Sea. Present data represent a contribution to existing knowledge about the ecology of leptocephali from the Congridae family in the southern Adriatic Sea, and also indicate the existence of differences in morphometric parameters between different areas, that is, the possibility of the existence of new geographic lines within the genus Ariosoma in the Adriatic Sea.

Expanding transport systems for life convenience and preserving the natural environment are essential but conflicting human activities. The operational expansion after the opening of a new terminal building at Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport was followed by changes in aircraft noise exposure. A series of socio-acoustic surveys were conducted around the airport, revealing different levels of noise annoyance responses in the surveyed sites. To clarify this discrepancy and to explore people’s true feelings, the Picture-Frustration test was conducted to assess attitudes toward the airport, aircraft noise, living environment, and awareness of environmental protection in the communities around the airport. A total of 321 responses were obtained. The results showed a significant variation in attitudes toward the airport and natural environment among residents in different areas. Urban residents preferred natural environment more than those living in rural and mixed sites, who desired harmony between nature and life convenience. Residents in rural sites raised more complaints about aircraft noise effects on sleep than those in the other sites. Factors of occupations and gardening activities did not affect residents’ attitudes toward the airport. The attitudes of the participants varied depending on the exposure noise levels. It was suggested that using multiple questioning methods is necessary to certify the true opinions and aspirations of people living in the project area and ensure sustainable development.
