Background: The present study was carried out to explore the efficiency of Indian herbal source from Hibiscus rosa against a chronic inflammatory disease. Hibiscus rosa belongs to Malvaceae, acts by suppression of inflammation mediators.Methods: Hydroalcoholic extract form Hibiscus rosa is prepared through soxhlet extraction and Diclofenac is used as the standard. Carrageenan and formaldehyde are administered to induce acute and chronic inflammation. Animals are divided into 6 groups with 6 animals each including Normal group, inflammatory control group, Diclofenac treated group and Hibiscus rosa treated group at different doses of 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg.Results: Different concentrations of Hibiscus rosa treated groups i.e. 250 mg/kg (p<0.05), 500 mg/kg (p<0.05) and 1000 mg/kg (p<0.01) showed significant reduction in Paw edema as compared to controls. Significant reduction in Body weight was also observed in Hibiscus rosa treated groups. Hematological profiles of Hibiscus rosa treated group are satisfying and significant.Conclusion: Results showed significant anti-inflammatory effect of Hydroalcoholic extract of Hibiscus rosa and justifying its therapeutic role in inflammatory condition..

Aegle Marmelos Linn (Rutaceae) is used as ethno medicine against various human ailments. Several curde extracts from various parts (Leaves, flower, stem, root etc) of the plant A. marmelos Linn have shown variable anti-inflammatory effects in acute and chronic inflammation in animal models. The anti-inflammatory effects of A marmelos linn may be of special advantage compared to conventional anti-inflammatory drugs. The present study has therefore been undertaken with the objective to evaluate the anti inflammatory effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of A. marmelos leaves, compared to a standard anti-inflammatory drug (indomethacin) in chronic inflammatory conditions. The anti-inflammatory effect was studied in rats using cotton pellet implantation, where granuloma formation was used as an index of chronic inflammation. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of A. marmelos leaves were given orally for 7 days daily at doses of 100 mg/kg body weight. The percent inhibition of granuloma formation following treatment with aqueous and ethanolic extracts of A. marmelos leaves, and indomethacin compared to control were 16.5%, 25.72%, and 39.37% respectively. The differences were statistically significant (p<0.05 in case of aqueous and ethanolic extracts and p<0.001 in case of indomethacin). The results suggest that in case of chronic inflammation, both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of A. marmelos have significant anti- inflammatory effect. The ethanolic extracts compared to aqueous extract produced greater anti- inflammatory effects.Ibrahim Med. Coll. J. 2015; 9(2): 52-54

Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) increases oxidative stress through free radical generation and incomplete volatilization. In addition to affecting the respiratory system, PM2.5 causes aging- and inflammation-related damage to skin. Farnesol (Farn), a natural benzyl semiterpene, possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and antibacterial properties. However, because of its poor water solubility and cytotoxicity at high concentrations, the biomedical applications of Farn have been limited. This study examined the deleterious effects of PM2.5 on the epidermis and dermis. In addition, Farn-encapsulated liposomes (Lipo-Farn) and gelatin/HA/xanthan gel containing Lipo-Farn were prepared and applied in vivo to repair and alleviate PM2.5-induced damage and inflammation in skin. The prepared Lipo-Farn was 342 ± 90 nm in diameter with an encapsulation rate of 69%; the encapsulation significantly reduced the cytotoxicity of Farn. Lipo-Farn exhibited a slow-release rate of 35% after 192 h of incubation. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration of PM2.5 was approximately 850 μg/mL, and ≥400 μg/mL PM2.5 significantly increased IL-6 production in skin fibroblasts. Severe impairment in the epidermis and hair follicles and moderate impairment in the dermis were found in the groups treated with post-PM2.5 and continuous subcutaneous injection of PM2.5. Acute and chronic inflammation was observed in the skin in both experimental categories in vivo. Treatment with 4 mM Lipo-Farn largely repaired PM2.5-induced injury in the epidermis and dermis, restored injured hair follicles, and alleviated acute and chronic inflammation induced by PM2.5 in rat skin. In addition, treatment with 4 mM pure Farn and 2 mM Lipo-Farn exerted moderate reparative and anti-inflammatory effects on impaired skin. The findings of the current study indicate the therapeutic and protective effects of Lipo-Farn against various injuries caused by PM2.5 in the pilosebaceous units, epidermis, and dermis of skin.

Caralluma is a plant that possessing a great therapeutic potential in folk medicine in Yemen, namely, Caralluma penicillata (C. penicillata) as antiulcer. The study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties and gastritis protection activity of C. penicillata against indomethacin in adult guinea pigs. The study was divided into four parts: firstly, the optimum dose of extract as anti-inflammatory effect was determined. Secondly, the acute anti-inflammatory effect of extract were estimated. Thirdly, the repeated doses of extract against chronic inflammation was estimated. The anti-inflammatory activity of extract was compared with indomethacin as a prototype of drug against inflammation. Fourthly, the gastritis protection properties of extract with/without indomethacin were performed. The results showed that a 400 mg/kg of 10% ethanol extract produced the maximum of anti-inflammatory effect. Also, the single dose of extract was equipotent for indomethacin (10 mg/kg), but shorter in duration with regard to acute anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, the repeated doses of extract against chronic inflammation were less potent than indomethacin with regard to ulcerogenic effect. On the other hand, extract-indomethacin combination reduced the gastritis effect of indomethacin based on ulcer index and histological study.

Acute and chronic anti-inflammatory effects of granules of Tien liet thanh giai were evaluated. For acute anti-inflammatory effect, granules of Tien liet thanh giai didn’t change the test indicators. In the chronic inflammation model, granules of Tien liet thanh giai remarkably provoked chronic anti-inflammatory effect through significantly decreasing granuloma weight as compared with the control group. key words: granules of Tien liet thanh giai, acute anti-inflammatory effect, chronic anti-inflammatory effect.

Chronic inflammation is considered as one of the challenging diseases, and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is strongly related to the onset of chronic inflammation. Therefore, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory approaches are particularly becoming suitable treatment and prevention of inflammation. Curcumin (CUR), a main component of turmeric extract, is well known as an effective agent in both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, there are still some limitations of its use including poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and oxidation by ROS. Nanotechnology has been used as a drug delivery system, which is a promising approach in overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks of CUR; hence, it improves the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of conventional medications. In this research, silica-containing redox nanoparticles (siRNP) were designed with the size of several tens of nanometers, prepared by self-assembly of an amphiphilic block copolymer consisting of drug absorptive silica moiety and ROS-scavenging nitroxide radical moiety in the hydrophobic segment. CUR was simply encapsulated into siRNP through the dialysis method, creating CUR-loaded siRNP (CUR@siRNP), which significantly improved the water solubility of CUR. The efficient antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effect of CUR@siRNP in vitro were also improved via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay and lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophage cell line activation, respectively. Oral administration of CUR@siRNP showed improvement in pharmacokinetic profile in vivo including AUC and Cmax values as compared to free CUR. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effect of nanoformulation was investigated in the colitis mouse model induced by dextran sodium sulfate.
