Phytochemical composition of fractions isolated from ten Salvia species by supercritical carbon dioxide and pressurized liquid extraction methods

Extracts obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) from the Ajuga iva aerial parts growth in three different geographical sites of Alegria were analysed. Tocopherols in SCE Extracts were quantified by HPLC, α-tocopherol dominated the profile in both A. iva of Bejaia (BEJ) and Bordj Bou Arreridj (BBA), while β-tocopherol was the lowest. PLE method produced higher extraction yields than SCE method, which ranged from 0.31 to 24.95% (w/w), the water gave the best yields extraction. Total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 15.60 to 63.45mg GAE/g DWE; also the water gave higher total yield of phenolics, and the best TPC from DWP. The antioxidant activity was assessed by different assays, water and SCE extracts showed a slightly higher antioxidative effect than that obtained by Ethanol and Acetone. A slight opposite trend was obtained with the FRAP antioxidant activity; Acetone was the best extract after SCE extracts. Small differences in antioxidant activity values were found between the different sites of A. iva: BEJ, BBA, and ELO.

Ginkgo biloba L. has always been a popular area of research due to its various active ingredients and pharmacological effects. Ginkgo biloba is rich in ginkgo flavonoids, ginkgolides, and ginkgolic acid, with anti-inflammation, antioxidation, neuroprotection, anti-platelet agglutination, hypolipidemic effect, anti-cancer, and anti-radiation properties. There are many methods to extract and separate the active components of ginkgo. Among them, supercritical carbon dioxide fluid extraction (SFE-CO2) is known for its green, clean, and environment-friendly properties. In this paper, the pharmacological activities, the active components, and structures of different parts of ginkgo, the extraction methods of its effective ingredients, and the application of the SFE-CO2 method for the extraction and separation of active ingredients in Ginkgo biloba from leaves, seeds, pollen, and roots were reviewed, in order to make best use of ginkgo resources, and provide support and references for the development of SFE-CO2 of active components from Ginkgo biloba.

Abstract Three extraction methods were used to remove lipid materials from 8 edible nuts and seeds before analysis for their total dietary fiber (TDF) and non- starch polysaccharide (NSP) contents. Portions of ground materials were extracted by: n-hexane, followed by 80% methanol, n-hexane-acetic acid (95 + 5, v/v), and supercritical carbon dioxide. Defatted samples were gelatinized in water and incubated with amyloglucosidase; 95% ethanol was added to the hydrolyzates, and the residues were collected on tared glass crucibles. TDF was calculated according to a simplified enzymatic-gravimetric method developed in our laboratory, and NSP was determined as described by Englyst and coworkers. Dietary fiber values obtained with any of the extraction methods range from 3.47 g/100 g for cashews to 28.56 g/100 g for sunflower seeds. Nonstarch polysaccharide values range from 2.43 g/100 g for pecans to 5.56 g/100 g for peanuts. With the exception of sunflower seeds, samples extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide had lower TDF contents but similar amounts of NSP compared with samples extracted by the other 2 methods.

Introduction: Sardine generally processed as canned fish, and in consequence of a lot of solid waste are generated as byproducts which could be good sources of fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acid compositions of total lipids extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) from sardine fish by-product (head, skin and viscera) were determined and the results were compared with Soxhlet extraction. Methods: SC-CO2 extraction was performed at the optimized condition at a temperature of 60 0 C, the pressure of 35 Mpa and flow rate of 3 ml min-1 . Results: Highest yield was obtained from the skin (42.5%) followed by the head (22.4%) and the viscera (9.6%) which is closer to that of the yield of Soxhlet extraction method where 44%, 23% and 11% (on dry basis) oil were yielded from skin, head and viscera, respectively. Saturated fatty acid was dominant incorporate with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid in all organs and the difference of extracted fatty acids between SC-CO2 and Soxhlet methods were insignificant. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was characteristically major PUFA accounting 19.8% in head, 15.4% in skin and 13.6% in viscera of the total fatty acids. Conclusions: Total oil extracted by SC-CO2 had lower free fatty acid content than the oil extracted by Soxhlet method. Thus, SC-CO2 could be the effective method for extracting omega-3 PUFA rich fish oil from sardine by-products.
