Poor resource support of the pathoanatomical service, a lack of training of medical and nursing staff, poor results of pathological and anatomical research, and personnel shortage in some territories and republics of the country have been observed for more than 30 years. The reference centers organized in 2019 will contribute to the centralization of the pathoanatomical service and improve its work in general, which will lead to more efficient use of medical personnel due to the load streamlining, interchangeability, automation of manual labor, and complete and rational use of equipment, as well as will shorten the time for surgical and biopsy material testing.

SUMMARY Acanthamoeba spp. are free-living amebae that inhabit a variety of air, soil, and water environments. However, these amebae can also act as opportunistic as well as nonopportunistic pathogens. They are the causative agents of granulomatous amebic encephalitis and amebic keratitis and have been associated with cutaneous lesions and sinusitis. Immuno compromised individuals, including AIDS patients, are particularly susceptible to infections with Acanthamoeba. The immune defense mechanisms that operate against Acanthamoeba have not been well characterized, but it has been proposed that both innate and acquired immunity play a role. The ameba's life cycle includes an active feeding trophozoite stage and a dormant cyst stage. Trophozoites feed on bacteria, yeast, and algae. However, both trophozoites and cysts can retain viable bacteria and may serve as reservoirs for bacteria with human pathogenic potential. Diagnosis of infection includes direct microscopy of wet mounts of cerebrospinal fluid or stained smears of cerebrospinal fluid sediment, light or electron microscopy of tissues, in vitro cultivation of Acanthamoeba, and histological assessment of frozen or paraffin-embedded sections of brain or cutaneous lesion biopsy material. Immunocytochemistry, chemifluorescent dye staining, PCR, and analysis of DNA sequence variation also have been employed for laboratory diagnosis. Treatment of Acanthamoeba infections has met with mixed results. However, chlorhexidine gluconate, alone or in combination with propamidene isethionate, is effective in some patients. Furthermore, effective treatment is complicated since patients may present with underlying disease and Acanthamoeba infection may not be recognized. Since an increase in the number of cases of Acanthamoeba infections has occurred worldwide, these protozoa have become increasingly important as agents of human disease.

Taenia martis is a tapeworm affecting mustelids, with rodents serving as intermediate hosts. The larval stage (cysticercus) has been found before only rarely in humans or primates. We hereby describe a case of cerebral T. martis cysticercosis in a French immunocompetent patient, confirmed by DNA analyses of biopsy material.

ABSTRACT The concentration of unoccupied high-affinity oestradiol receptors in the cytosol of human uterine endometrial curettings and biopsy tissue has been determined. In normal specimens, where the day of the menstrual cycle could be assessed histologically, a variation of tissue receptor concentration throughout the cycle was observed showing a maximum at mid-cycle and minima at the beginning and end of the cycle. The distribution of oestradiol receptor sites in the endometrium and myometrium along the length of the uterus has also been studied. Highest concentrations in the endometrium were found in the fundus and these levels fell progressively to negligible concentrations in the isthmus and cervix. In general, the concentration of receptor sites in biopsy material was lower than in curettings and this observation has been related on the region of the uterus from which the samples were obtained. The concentration of receptor sites in abnormal uterine specimens lay within the normal range.

Background: Histological characteristics of endometrial biopsy material as assessed by light microscopy remain the diagnostic standard for the clinical diagnosis of endometrial pathology. Management of abnormal uterine bleeding is not complete without tissue diagnosis. The aim of the study was to find out the histopathological pattern of the endometrium in abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods: Endometrial biopsy specimens received from Jan 2007 to Nov 2010 were studied retrospectively in the Department of Histopathology, Helping Hands Community Hospital, Kathmandu. The specimens were routinely processed and the hematoxyllin and eosin stained slides were studied. Results: A total of 300 specimens were analyzed. In the group of patients less than 40 years of age, 73 (50%) were normal, 34(23%) had abnormal physiologic changes and 13 (9%) had pregnancy related complications and benign changes. In the age group between 40 – 55 years, abnormal physiological changes, benign conditions and normal physiological changes were 45 (32%), 41 (29%) and 37 (26%) respectively. In the age group > 55 years, there were 3(21%) malignant and 3(21%) benign conditions. There were 5(36%) unsatisfactory samples in this age group. Conclusion: It is important to know the histological pattern of the endometrium in abnormal uterine bleeding in different age groups since it will help in the management of the cases. In this study endometrial hyperplasias were seen in 55 cases (18.8%). The importance of studying the histological pattern of endometrium in abnormal uterine bleeding in different age group is to help in correctly managing the cases. Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is an opportunistic pathogen, and the most common central nervous system manifestation is meningitis while listerial brain abscesses are rare. We describe 2 cases of brain abscess due to LM and a literature review. Only 73 cases were reported in the literature from 1968 to 2017. The mean age was 51.9, and the mortality rate was 27.3%. In 19% of cases, no risk factors for neurolisteriosis were identified. Blood cultures were positive in 79.5% while CSF or brain abscess biopsy material was positive in 50.8%. In 40% was started a monotherapy regimen while in 60% a combination therapy without substantial differences in mortality. Fifty-two percent underwent neurosurgery while 45.3% has been treated only with medical therapy. The mortality rates were, respectively, 13% and 38.2%. Only 25% of patients who were treated for ≤6 weeks underwent neurosurgery, while 80% of those who were treated for ≥8 weeks were operated. The mortality rates were, respectively, 12.5% and 0%, suggesting that a combined approach of surgery and prolonged medical therapy would have an impact on mortality. We believe that it is essential to carry out this review as brain abscesses are rare, and there are no definitive indications on the optimal management, type, and duration of therapy.
