The scope of this work was to develop a technique based on the regression method and apply it on a real cooled geometry for measuring its internal heat transfer distribution. The proposed methodology is based upon an already available literature approach. For implementation of the methodology, the geometry is initially heated to a known steady temperature, followed by thermal transient, induced by injection of ambient air to its internal cooling system. During the thermal transient, external surface temperature of the geometry is recorded with the help of infrared camera. Then, a numerical procedure based upon a series of transient finite element analyses of the geometry is applied by using the obtained experimental data. The total test duration is divided into time steps, during which the heat flux on the internal surface is iteratively updated to target the measured external surface temperature. The final procured heat flux and internal surface temperature data of each time step is used to find the convective heat transfer coefficient via linear regression. This methodology is successfully implemented on three geometries: a circular duct, a blade with U-bend internal channel, and a cooled high pressure vane of real engine, with the help of a test rig developed at the University of Florence, Italy. The results are compared with the ones retrieved with similar approach available in the open literature, and the pros and cons of both methodologies are discussed in detail for each geometry.

An exact closed-form analytical solution is presented to solve the thermo-elasto-plastic problem of thick-walled spherical vessels made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). Assuming that the inner surface is exposed to a uniform heat flux, and that the outer surface is exposed to an airstream. The heat conduction equation for the one-dimensional problem in spherical coordinates is used to obtain temperature distribution in the sphere. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction according to a power law distribution, whereas the Poisson’s ratio is kept constant. The Poisson’s ratio due to slight variations in engineering materials is assumed constant. The plastic model is based on von Mises yield criterion and its associated flow rules under the assumption of perfectly plastic material behavior. For various values of inhomogeneity constant, the so-obtained solution is then used to study the distribution of limit heat flux, displacement and stresses versus the radial direction. Moreover, the effect of increasing the heat flux and pressure on the propagation of the plastic zone are investigated. Furthermore, the effect of change in Poisson’s ratio on the value of the critical material parameter is demonstrated. The present study is also validated by comparing the numerical results for thick elasto-plastic spherical shells available in the literature. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, in previous studies, exact thermo-elasto-plastic behavior of FGM thick-walled sphrical pressure vessels has not investigated.

A computational fluid dynamics code is applied to simulate fluid flow and combustion in a four-stroke single cylinder engine with flat combustion chamber geometry. Heat flux and heat transfer coefficient on the cylinder head, cylinder wall, piston, intake and exhaust valves are determined. Result for a certain condition is compared for total heat transfer coefficient of the cylinder engine with available correlation proposed by experimental measurement in the literature and close agreement is observed. It is observed that the value of heat flux and heat transfer coefficient varies considerably in different positions of the combustion chamber, but the trend with crank angle is almost the same.

Aero-thermodynamic analysis of a cylindrical leading edge placed in a hypersonic stream is carried out using an in-house developed conjugate heat transfer (CHT) solver. Isotropic and functionally graded materials (FGM) are tested as heat shields to understand the effects of the material property on the flow structure and aerodynamic heating associated with the mutual coupling of fluid flow and heat transfer. A simplified partitioned approach is employed to couple the independently developed fluid flow and heat transfer solvers to perform conjugate heat transfer studies. This framework employs a cell-centred finite volume formulation with an edge-based algorithm. Both strong and loose coupling algorithms are implemented for the data transfer across the fluid–solid interface. A test case of hypersonic flow over a cylindrical leading edge composed of an isotropic material is considered to validate the accuracy and correctness of numerical formulation adopted in the in-house solver. The significance of solid domain materials on the conjugate heat transfer has been studied by considering both isotropic material and FGM. The loosely coupled CHT solver required 10 times less simulation time when compared with the strongly coupled CHT solver. The interface heat flux evolution over time showed a decreasing trend, whereas an increasing trend was for the interface temperature. The current study strongly recommends CHT analysis for the design of thermal protection system of space vehicles. The thermal performance of FGMs composed of various volume fractions of Zirconia and Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) is assessed. The temperature distributions obtained from the CHT analysis shows that FGM with a power index of unity is a good material choice for thermal protection systems.
