Abstract Aiming at the current development of drilling technology and the deepening of oil and gas exploration, we focus on better studying the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the drill string under complex working conditions and knowing the real movement of the drill string during drilling. This paper firstly combines the actual situation of the well to establish the dynamic model of the horizontal drill string, and analyzes the dynamic characteristics, giving the expression of the force of each part of the model. Secondly, it introduces the piecewise constant method (simply known as PT method), and gives the solution equation. Then according to the basic parameters, the axial vibration displacement and vibration velocity at the test points are solved by the PT method and the Runge–Kutta method, respectively, and the phase diagram, the Poincare map, and the spectrogram are obtained. The results obtained by the two methods are compared and analyzed. Finally, the relevant experimental tests are carried out. It shows that the results of the dynamic model of the horizontal drill string are basically consistent with the results obtained by the actual test, which verifies the validity of the dynamic model and the correctness of the calculated results. When solving the drill string nonlinear dynamics, the results of the PT method is closer to the theoretical solution than that of the Runge–Kutta method with the same order and time step. And the PT method is better than the Runge–Kutta method with the same order in smoothness and continuity in solving the drill string nonlinear dynamics.

The estimation approach of the work performed by the main force factors acting on the drill string, rotary and combined drilling methods, was proposed. The problem of obtaining analytical functions of force factors action for a mechanical system with distributed parameters was formulated. To solve the problem, the axial load and torque functions of the drill string analysis was performed, depending on the alternating parameter - the well depth. By integrating these functions, analytical dependencies were established for determining the axial load and torque acting on the drill string in sections of directional and S-shaped wells. Relying on industrial data, numerical calculations of the size of work on sections of such wells were carried out. The obtained research results can be further used to find energy-saving modes of the drill string.

Fatigue damage in the rotating drill pipe in the horizontal well of mining engineering is usually resulted from cyclic bending stresses caused by the rotation of the pipe especially when it is passing through curved sections or horizontal sections. This paper studies fatigue life prediction method of rotating drill pipe which is considering initial crack in horizontal well of mining engineering. Forman fatigue life prediction model which considering stress ratio is used to predict drill string fatigue life and the corresponding software has been written. The program can be used to calculate the stress of down hole assembly, can predict stress and alternating load in the process of rotating-on bottom. Therefore, establishing buckling string fatigue life prediction model with cracks can be a good reference to both operation and monitor of the drill pipe for mining engineering.

During exploitation of horizontal well drilling engineering, the problem of drill string failure is very serious, there are many reasons, and drill string vibrations are main reasons. In this paper drill string of horizontal well is object being studied. The models about various vibrations are set up. The vibration rule of drill string is obtained under different situation; the axial and lateral frequency of drill string vibration in free state is studied. The analysis of modal vibration of drill string is the basis of the analysis of harmonic vibration of drill string. The harmonic vibrations rules of drill string of horizontal well are studied. All sorts of resonance frequencies are obtained practicability. This study can prove basic method for optimizing drill tool of horizontal well and reducing drill string failure.

Drill strings are one of the most significant rotor components employed in oil and gas exploitation. In this paper, an improved dynamical model of drill-string-like pipes conveying fluid is developed by taking into account the axial spin, fluid–structure interaction (FSI), damping as well as curvature and inertia nonlinearities. The partial differential equations of motion are derived by two sequential Euler angles and the Hamilton principle and then directly handled by the multiple scales method. The nonlinear amplitudes, frequencies and whirling mode shapes are all investigated towards various system parameters to display the nonlinear dynamical characteristics of such a special rotor system coupled with FSI. It is revealed that the nonlinear amplitudes and frequencies are explicitly dependent on the spinning speed, while the flowing fluid mainly contributes to the linear frequencies, and consequently influences the nonlinear amplitudes and frequencies. The FSI effect and axial spin can both improve the forward procession mode and suppress the backward one, while both procession modes will be suppressed by the viscoelastic damping. The pipe will ultimately present a forward as well as decayed whirling motion for the fundamental mode.
