A nondimensional cycling model for estimating the seasonal performance of conventional air conditioners and heat pumps was developed. Starting with a simple time-constant model of the startup of an air conditioner, a nondimensional time variable was developed which captures three important influences of on-off cycling performance degradation: response of the system, fraction on-time of the system, and cycling rate. Experimental data from three air conditioners and one heat pump provided excellent agreement with the model. The model should be applicable to any cooling technology that has similar on-off characteristics to conventional air conditioners and heat pumps.

The world has not been able to achieve minimum greenhouse gas emissions in buildings’ energy consumptions because the energy and emissions optimization techniques have not been fully utilized. Thermal comfort is one of the most important issues for both residential and commercial buildings. Out of the 40% of global energy consumed by buildings, a large fraction is used to maintain their thermal comfort. In this study, a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in building energy conservation and efficiency application is presented based on existing high-quality research papers. Additionally, the retrofit of the heating/cooling and hot water system for an entire community in Cyprus is presented. This study aims to analyze the technical and environmental benefits of replacing existing electric heaters for hot water with heat pump water heating systems and the use of heat pump air conditioners for thermal comfort in place of the existing ordinary air conditioners for space heating and cooling. One administrative building, 86 apartments (including residential and commercial) buildings, and a restaurant building is retrofitted, and the feasibility of the project is determined based on three economic indicators, namely; simple payback period (SPP), internal rate of return (IRR), and net present value (NPV). The electrical energy required by the hot water systems and the heating/cooling system is reduced by 263,564 kWh/yr and 144,825 kWh/yr, respectively. Additionally, the retrofit project will reduce Cyprus’ CO2 emission by 121,592.8 kg yearly. The SPP, IRR, and NPV for the project show that the retrofit is economically feasible.

An experimental setup is designed and built to study the operation characteristics of the air-cooled heat pump system for small residential in this paper. Based on the experimental setup, the characteristics of the energy efficiency ratio(EER) and cooling capacity have been researched when the outlet temperature of cooling water and outdoor environment temperature change. The experimental data demonstrate that the cooling capacity and EER of the system increases with increasing outlet cooling water temperatures and decreases with increasing outdoor environment temperatures. In addition, the correlation of the system EER is calculated by using the least square method based on the experimental data.

A drying experiment of litchi pulp was done with a self-built heat-pump drying system. A few commonly-used thin-layer drying models for foods were linearized and fitted with the drying experimental data to select a relatively optimal model of depicting the relationship between moisture ratio and drying time of the heat-pump drying of litchi pulp. It was found that the Page model is relatively optimal. The multivariate linear regression approach was employed to solve for the parameters of the Page model based on experimental data and an experimental verification was conducted; the verification results show that the predicted values of the Page model have a good fitness with the measured values and thus the Page model can predict more accurately the moisture ratio and drying rate of litchi pulp in a heat-pump drying process.

According to the real-time prediction for performance degradation trend, the commonly used method is just based on field data. But this methods prediction result will not be so much ideal when the fitting of degradation trend of field data is not good. To solve the problem, the paper introduces a new method which is not only based on field method but also based on reliability experimental data coming from the history experiment. We use the relationship between the field data and reliability experimental data to get the result of the two kinds of data respectively and then get the weights according to the two prediction results. Finally, the final real-time prediction result for performance degradation tendency can obtain by allocating the weights to the two prediction results.

Greenhouses play a significant function in the modern agriculture economy even if require great amount of energy for heating systems. An interesting solution to alleviate the energy costs and environmental problems may be represented by the use of geothermal energy. The aim of this paper, based on measured experimental data, such as the inside greenhouse temperature and the heat pump performance (input and output temperatures of the working fluid, electric consumption), was the evaluation of the suitability of low enthalpy geothermal heat sources for agricultural needs such as greenhouses heating. The study was carried out at the experimental farm of the University of Bari, where a greenhouse was arranged with a heating system connected to a ground-source heat pump (GSHP), which had to cover the thermal energy request. The experimental results of this survey highlight the capability of the geothermal heat source to ensue thermal conditions suitable for cultivation in greenhouses even if the compressor inside the heat pump have operated continuously in a fluctuating state without ever reaching the steady condition. Probably, to increase the performance of the heat pump and then its coefficient of performance within GSHP systems for heating greenhouses, it is important to analyse and maximise the power conductivity of the greenhouse heating system, before to design an expensive borehole ground exchanger. Nevertheless, according to the experimental data obtained, the GSHP systems are effective, efficient and environmental friendly and may be useful to supply the heating energy demand of greenhouses.
