Abstract Bond pad metal corrosion was observed during assembly process characterization of a 0.13um Cu microprocessor device. The bond pad consisted of 12kÅ of Al-0.5%Cu atop 9kÅ of Cu, separated by a thin Ta diffusion barrier. The corrosion was first noted after the wafer dicing process. Analysis of the pad surface revealed pitting-type corrosion, consistent with published reports of classic galvanic cell reactions between Al2Cu (theta phase) particles and the surrounding Al pad metal. Analysis of the bond pads on samelot wafers which had not been diced showed higher-thanexpected incidence of hillock and pit hole defects on the Al surface. Statistically designed experiments were formulated to investigate the possibility that the observed pre-saw pad metal defects act as nucleation sites for galvanic corrosion during the sawing process. Analyses of the experimental samples were conducted using optical and scanning electron microscopy, along with focused ion beam deprocessing and energy dispersive X-ray. This paper explores the relationship between the presence of these pre-existing defects and the propensity for the bond pads to corrode during the dicing process, and reviews the conditions under which pit hole defects are formed during the final stages of the Cu-metallized wafer fabrication process. Indications are that strict control of wafer fab backend processes can reduce or eliminate the incidence of such defects, resulting in elimination of bond pad corrosion in the wafer dicing process.

The components in slurry pump suffer serious corrosion and abrasion in the phosphorus fertilizer manufacturing process because they undergo corrosion of H3PO4 medium and impact of particles at the same time. Presently, High chromium cast irons are often used to produce the components in slurry pump. In order to reveal the corrosive law, the corrosion properties of high chromium cast iron with 26wt.%Cr content (Cr26) were tested under different H3PO4 medium concentration conditions. Using back-propagation (BP) neural network, the non-linear relationship between the corrosion weight losses (W) and H3PO4 concentration, corrosion time (C, t) is established on the base of the dealing with experimental data. The results show that the well-trained BP neural network can predict the wear weight loss precisely according to H3PO4 concentration and corrosion time. The prediction results reveal that corrosion weight loss rises linearly with increasing corrosion time. The H3PO4 concentration has obvious effect on corrosion property. When H3PO4 concentration is lower than about 0.5mol/L, high chromium cast iron has well resistance to H3PO4 corrosion. However, the corrosion resistance of high chromium cast iron rapidly decreases when the H3PO4 concentration exceed about 0.8 mol/L. It is suggest the high chromium cast iron be used under the condition of H3PO4 concentration of lower 0.8 mol/L.

Ni-carbon nanotubes nanocomposite coatings were obtained from a Watts bath containing uniformly dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The surface morphology was investigated by the SEM images of coatings. The mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the nanocomposite coatings were investigated. This study revealed these CNTs reinforced Ni nanocoatings have improved mechanical and corrosion property.

The corrosion mechanism of organic silicon modified polyurea composite coating under different CO2 partial pressures was studied using high-temperature autoclave, combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), adhesion tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technology. The experimental results showed that: there was no corrosion product formed on the surface of coating sample after high-temperature high-pressure corrosion test, and with the increasing of CO2 partial pressure, the coating adhesion and impedance values decline increases. Moreover CO2 partial pressure increases accelerated the failure process of polyurea composite coating system.
