AbstractThe ternary chalcopyrite semiconductor Cu(In/Ga)(Se/S)2 is currently used as an absorber layer in high efficiency thin film solar cells. In this study, various types of I-III-VI (I = Cu, III = Ga or In, VI = S or Se) thin films (CuGaS2, CuInS2 and CuInSe2) were prepared from a series of organometallic precursors, M[(S/Se)2CNMeR]n (M = Cu, In, Ga; R = alkyl) by aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD). In contrast to the metal alkyl compounds, MR3 (M = In and Ga; R = alkyl), which are pyrophoric, the precursors are easy to synthesize by one-pot reactions and are air stable. The optimum growth temperature for the preparation of these films on glass substrates using aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) was found to be above 400 °C in terms of crystallinity, although deposition does occur at lower temperatures. The films have been characterised using XRPD, SEM and EDS. SEM analyses show all films are microcrystalline. XRPD results show evidence of the crystalline nature of theses films. The results of this comprehensive study are presented and discussed.

Fine powders of intermetallic NiAl and Ni3Al were synthesized through organometallic precursors, which were coprecipitated from aqueous solutions of NiCl2 and AlCl3 by the addition of ammonium benzoate and hydradinium monochloride as precipitants. Ni3Al and NiAl were synthesized by a two-step heat treatment of the precursors. The initial step was the thermal decomposition of organic groups to form homogeneous mixtures of Ni3C, amorphous Al2O3, and free C below 1000 °C. The other step was the reaction above 1300 °C to form the intermetallics. Single phase powders of NiAl and Ni3Al with the particle size less than 3 μm were obtained above 1300 and 1400 °C, respectively.

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is an important type of π-conjugated building block for high-performance organic electronic materials. DPP-based conjugated materials are usually synthesized via Suzuki, Stille, or Negishi cross-coupling reactions, which require organometallic precursors. In this paper, a series of novel phenyl-cored DPP molecules, including five meta-phenyl-cored molecules and four para-phenyl-cored molecules, have been synthesized in moderate to good yields, in a facile manner, through the Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of C–H bonds, and their optoelectrical properties have been investigated in detail. All new molecules have been fully characterized by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, UV–visible spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. This synthetic strategy has evident advantages of atom- and step-economy and low cost, compared with traditional cross-coupling reactions.

Traditionally ceramics have been shaped from powders and densified at temperatures close to their liquid point. New processing methods using various types of sols, gels, and organometallic precursors at low temperature which enable densificatlon at elevated temperatures well below their liquidus, hold the promise of producing ceramics and glasses of controlled and reproducible properties that are highly reliable for electronic, structural, space or medical applications. Ultrastructure processing of silicon alkoxides in acid medium and mixtures of Ludox HS-40 (120Å spheres from DuPont) and Kasil (38% K2O &62% SiO2) in basic medium have been aimed at producing materials with a range of well defined pore sizes (∼20-400Å) to study physical phenomena and materials behavior in well characterized confined geometries. We have studied Pt/C surface replicas of some of these porous sol-gels prepared at temperatures below their glass transition point.
