It has been recently proposed that mindfulness can improve sleep quality through the mediating role on psychological distress and that acceptance may play a pivotal role in mindfulness beneficial effects. The aim of the present work was to understand the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on dispositional mindfulness, sleep, and distress, and on their relationships. In particular, we wanted to test the hypothesis that the detrimental effects of lockdown on sleep depended on mindfulness and distress (including anxiety and depression) and that the acceptance facet of mindfulness played the leading role. A longitudinal study based on self-report questionnaires was conducted on 39 Italian adults (M age = 35.03, SD = 14.02; 21 men) assessing mindfulness, distress, and sleep quality before (23 December 2019–8 March 2020) and during (27 April 2020–10 May 2020) the first Italian COVID-19 lockdown. Lockdown decreased mindfulness while increasing distress and sleep problems. Path analysis showed that the effects of lockdown on sleep were fully mediated by mindfulness and distress. Furthermore, a more detailed analysis showed that these effects were mainly dependent on the acceptance component of mindfulness working through anxiety. The present study confirms, in the context of the COVID-19 lockdown, a model according to which mindfulness, and specifically acceptance, influences sleep through the mediating role of distress.

Background Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. Hitherto, the magnitude of sleep debt, social jetlag, and Locomotor Inactivity During Sleep (LIDS) in different shift systems is unknown. Methods Here, we investigated the impact of five different shift rosters on sleep in 129 industrial workers from Germany. Permanent night work with multiple shift systems with and without night shifts and with different shift lengths were compared. Wrist-activity was monitored over 28 days revealing sleep on- and offsets as well as LIDS as proxy for sleep quality. Overall, 3,865 sleep bouts comprising 22,310 hours of sleep were examined. Results The mean daily age-adjusted sleep duration (including naps) was 6:43h and did not differ between shift workers of different rosters. However, sleep duration on workdays was particularly low in rotational shift systems with 12h-shifts (5:00h), while overall sleep debt was highest. Shift workers showed a median absolute social jetlag of 3:03h, which differed considerably between shift types and rosters (p<0.0001). Permanent night workers had the highest social jetlag (5:08h) and latest mid-sleeps on workdays and free days. Sleep quality was reduced in permanent night shift workers compared with shift workers in other rosters and differed between daytime and nighttime sleep. Conclusions Shift work leads to partial sleep deprivation, which particularly affects workers in 12h-shifts and permanent night shifts. Working these shifts resulted in higher sleep debts and larger absolute social jetlag whereas sleep quality was especially reduced in permanent night shift workers compared with shift workers of other rosters.

Background:OMERACT has identified sleep quality as one of the key outcomes for people with RA [1]. Poor sleep and reduced total sleep time (TST) are common complaints among people with RA. Poor sleep can in turn lead to deterioration in function, reduce activity levels and also impact mental health. Although sleep and mental health outcomes have been identified as important, they are frequently not measured in clinical trials. Involving key stakeholders, like people with RA, is important when designing exercise interventions as it allows consideration of particular issues that may influence future intervention delivery. This study involved people with RA who participated in a pilot RCT group exercise class to improve sleep quality.Objectives:To explore participants experiences of an exercise intervention in improving sleep quality and TST, to capture their reality.Methods:A descriptive qualitative study design of face-to-face semi-structured interviews was employed. The interview schedule explored a number of areas: experience of the intervention; outcome measures used; views regarding the intervention; perceptions regarding exercise and sleep and the impact on sleep. Interviews were transcribed verbatim by a professional transcriber. Inductive thematic analysis was used as an analytical approach. Interview transcripts were read, notes made, and ideas formulated to facilitate coding. The research team searched for patterns, analysed and coded the data, and generated themes and sub-themes. Themes were reviewed by the research team to check if they worked in relation to the coded extracts and the entire data set. The COREQ checklist provided guidance.Results:Twelve females participated with a mean age of 58 (SD 7.4); mean RA diagnosis of 9.9 (SD 7.4) years; moderate to severe disability (HAQ-DI: 1.5 (SD 0.60). Four main themes were generated: 1) Positive impact of exercise on sleep -“I really didn’t think any type of exercise would help me sleep better if I’m honest.”;2) Positive experiences of exercise intervention to improve sleep-“I learnt so much regarding walking that I didn’t even think about.”;3) Clear mental health benefits –“If you don’t sleep well then it will have a knock-on effect to your mental health”; 4) Achieving empowerment and ownership when exercising -“I feel empowered now and confident that I’m not doing harm to myself”.The findings demonstrated that participants were clearly surprised that exercise could improve sleep.Conclusion:In a variety of inflammatory conditions exercise is recommended as an effective intervention for the treatment of sleeping disorders. Although there is a growing consensus that exercise will benefit sleep, research is severely lacking in those with RA. This study demonstrates that participants were clearly surprised that exercise could improve their sleep. Introduction Occupation-related fatigue and sleep loss are common among shift workers in the emergency department (ED), who deliver round-the-clock critical care service to patients. These factors affect their performance and impose an unnecessary hazard to patients, while also endangering themselves.

SummaryThis study tests the impact of COVID-19 on sleep of Algerian population before and during the COVID-19 quarantine by an estimated online survey, adapted from the PSQI Italian version. Including 1210 participants (age between 18-60 years old). The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 22.0 software. Our results showed a significant change in sleeping quality during quarantine, the sleep timing markedly changed, we also noticed additional use of sleeping medications. Algerian scientists recommend to build public awareness and to provide necessary information regarding Algerian sleep quality, especially for Algerian adults.

The impact on healthcare organization on the territory of Russian Arctic of unique natural and climatic, demographic, ethnic, settlement and professional factors of influencing the health of population, constantly or temporarily living on this territory is studied. The necessity is substantiated of various forms and resource provision with healthcare services such real and potential patients of Arctic medical institutions, as representatives of indigenous small peoples of the North, workers of mining and metallurgical industry, military personnel, sailors and shift workers. In this connection a correction of a number of All-Russian normative acts is proposed.
